Cooked Thawed Small Whole Australian Rock Lobster $20 Each (Was $35) @ Woolworths

2500

"Woolworths has announced a half price lobster sale in the lead-up to Christmas.

The retail giant will sell Western Australian rock lobsters for just $20 each, 50% less than they were this time last year.

The luxury seafood buy is a favourite across Australia, however high prices have meant it’s often too expensive to include in festive spreads."

  • Look tiny, are these export (Chinese) grade lobsters?

    • +1

The export grade ones go to China and Japan silly.

      • +6

        Have I news for you…

    • +13

      The ones "John West" rejects.

    • +7

nope, exports are over 1kg, aussie only can buy small ones, crazy
hence i won't be supporting this
it's just getting really stupid that we can only eat good quality aussie meat and seafood overseas…and 1/3 of the price over there.

japan keep all the good foods themselves, i don't know why aussie don't.

      • +3

        Because the Liberal government.

      • +1

        Japan don't "keep", Australia "sells"…

        Who do you vote for?

      • Exports need to compete with other countries like Canada, South Africa and US, if you cant compete with quality and price, your market literally gone.

Let's talk about global economic rather than politics…

        • +1

I think politics has played somewhat of a fairly large role in global economics? Particularly highlighted recently in Australia's trading relationship with China and all that.

        • It's the politicians that strike trade agreements. Can't separate politics and trade. Not unless you go complete free market. And politicians won't let that happen, so back to politics and economics being inseparable.

      • Because (most) Aussies are stupid and don't value high quality fresh meat and seafood. Hence why we export all our high grade products and import low grade. And it is not just about the price because as you mentioned they are often sold cheaper overseas than here.
I was amazed at the super high quality cuts of meat in Japanese supermarkets mostly from Aus but also from USA and at great prices.
The supermarket duopoly is also a part of the problem as they will drop lines and products ASAP to save cents on the dollar even if it means replacing with imports. And they also prefer to push high volume sales and make their profits there.

        • +1

It very often is exactly just about the price, lol. Crayfish being absolutely case in point.

      • +2

You can purchase large lobsters in Australia - it's just most aren't willing to pay the price for it. You're going to have to go to speciality stores rather than super markets if you want good quality seafood.

    • +5

these parasitic suppliers have been overcharging Australians for years because they have been selling the bulk of their produce to china.

    • Australians I think don't want / not willing to pay the price that other nations want to pay. Other counties value and pay a premium for our fruit so why would the sellers want to sell to us? Eg would we pay $10 for an orange wholesale? Probably not. But others will.

      • +1

It’s worth thinking that maybe Australians would have more discretionary income if the issues of job security, housing affordability, immigration policy were being properly addressed rather than politicians just kicking the can down the road?

    • +6

Check your tag, we were all made in China.

  • +7

    Lobster for a lobster?

  • +5

You can also buy back of the boat live rock lobster from Freo, above 500g for $20 each.

Or Spudshed WA doing cooked 400g for $15 each.

    • +1

Sounds small. What weight is a minimum size one? (76mm carapace)

      • "Commonly taken at about 8 - 10 cm carapace length (just over the minimum size limit), and about 0.5 kg."

        • They are likely smaller than 500g. Harris Farm have a special on atm, 350g ones are $23.99. Maybe the same, maybe better.

    • Yes, but you have to go to the back of that boat. It's always possible to grab a bargain with a great deal of footwork. Which doesn't always translate to a more economical lifestyle.

  • +5

    • $9 lobster tails? Where can I get those?

      • Woolies and coles both have them, don't taste anywhere near as good though

    • +4

You don't win friends with salad.

  • +7

These are sold per lobster so make sure you get the sales person to weigh them first. Mrs SS bought 3 and they weighed around 475g each but many only weigh
around 350g. She had the sales person weighing them until she found 3 she liked.

    • +3

About $60/kg then? They can go lower I reckon.

      • +3

Gosh these are tiny, much smaller than I was thinking.

      • Interesting, heard this export saga on the news the other day. The lobster boat operators said their running cost is about $30 per kg, and they were selling off the boat for around $40-50 a kg (but that's probably for the biggies)

        • News reported the suppliers were selling 1.5kg live ones locally for $100. But they said they would have sold that to China for about $250 previously, no-brainer for them until recently.

  • How do you prepare them to eat?

    • +2

      Just grill with little salt

      Simple is the best

    • +3

      Crack open, eat.

    • +1

My cats eat raw, but they are not quantum cats

    • +1

Dice the meat up and toss them onto salads. Use the shell/head/claws to make real lobster soup.

    • White wine, garlic, pepper, butter and dollop of cream!!

P.S. - I expect these to be farm lobsters, which are normally pretty small.

Might be better off with cray tails, or M.Bay Bugs at a per kg cost of eatable product.

      • I think it's a bit early for the farmed lobsters to be showing up in shops. (It's about a 3 year maturation from memory)
It looks like Queensland only started mid to late 2019 and Tasmania 2018

    • Already cooked so as Xizor said just crack and eat. Use some seafood sauce or tartar sauce if you want. Goes good with salad.

      • Lobster bun.

    • Boil in plain water
      Break open shell
      Remove the meat
Crumb or batter and deep fry
      Serve with tom sauce

  • lobster is the new currency

    • +1

What's the exchange rate between these lobsters and eneloops?
