  • Looking for a half decent one but reviews suggest anything that isn’t a dedicated head unit with a camera is trash?

    • to me this kind of thing looks like a hack job

you may as well go with a dual din system however $49 is a big gulf to a $300+ dual din

and then you get into the murkey world of gps and carplay android auto

      • +3

Literally just wanted to add a reverse cam to an old car lol but I can see how this can get out of hand quickly

        • yup exactly. because then there's ISO cable costs, might need a fascia, installation costs if you're not handy etc.

This one says wireless/wired but reviews seem to suggest doesn't have the wireless relay needed (which sort of makes sense given the price point. If you just need it for reversing purposes and are handy with tools/install then consider getting one of these: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Car-Rear-Reversing-Parking-4-Sen…. Mate got something similar around same price for wife's hatch, took us 1-2 hours to install and we're reasonably skilled but certainly not experts. if you're adventurous there are 8 sensor versions to add front sensors as well.

          • @ccrap: I stuff around with electronics in my down time and am okay with basic wiring/soldering etc . Might be a good option, even though I envision a lot of swearing . Ty matey

          • @ccrap: Parents want to add a reverse camera on the back of a caravan. You guys recon this will do?

Or could they simply add a second / switchable cam to their stock head unit with car reverse camera?

            • @tunzafun001: The one listed by the OP? Yeah should do the job fine though you might need to get some longer cables (as the ad doesn't say how long the provided cables are and the wireless capability has been questioned in the reviews). If it is wireless then brilliant, you don;t have to worry about cable length or any special connector requirements from caravan to car.

The second/switchable cam to stock unit will of course be a much more elegant solution in terms of appearance as you don't need another monitor on the dash etc but likely more complicated as stock head units are not very 'expandable' eg the head unit might not support 2 cam inputs and so you'll need to splice the caravan cam feed line into the the original car reverse cam line etc and then install an external switch on the dash to change between the two.

My personal opinion from driving a caravan previously is better to have a separate monitor like the one the OP listed because when reversing into a spot at a tight angle then you can see on the car's rear cam how sharp you can take it without the caravan/trailer dinging the car (not sure what the technical term is for this but essentially a reversing jackknife if that makes sense?)

              • @ccrap: Cheers. I think a wireless setup will be the go. Agree re seperate monitor.n

Probably easier to just stick a $30 wifi security camera on the back of the van and just use their phone as a wifi hotspot. Could even just use an old phone. Guess you don't get the reverse lines /sensor though.

                • @tunzafun001: yes but will also will need a bit of patience with the wifi cam as will need to whip out phone each time and connect to cam to see footage (better keep it in a mount or might get a fine!)

OP has since posted below a photo of this set and it appears to contain the wireless sender and receiver modules so this one should meet your use case bang on and at a great price (as long as your folks don't have a ginormously long caravan which might make the wireless cut in/out :))

                  • @ccrap: ah nice… if it's wireless, lock it in..

No stock in the state :(

    • They're not trash, they're actually quite good for the price imo, but with separate car accessories it can easily become one of these situations

  • The displays integrated into a replacement or clip on rear view mirror are great.

I installed one in my wife’s 2014 Mazda 3 years ago, powered the whole thing off a reverse light and was still working brilliantly after two years when we sold the car. The mirror clipped over the original mirror.

Think it was only $99 from SuperAutoRepco (can’t remember which one).

  • Is it just composite video input?

  • OP it’s worth noting that this system doesn’t include any of the required parts to operate wirelessly, it’s misleading on the SCA website and should be noted in the post.

    • It does. It is from Repco not SCA.

      • Sorry Repco, and from their own comment on a customer enquiry it’s not wireless out of the box. Possible the reps wrong on their site but who knows. I’d definitely be checking off wireless is something you want.

“ Thanks for your enquiry. Unfortunately we do not offer a wireless version of this product in our ranges. This has been passed on to our category team for future review and consideration.”

        • I bought one from Repco this afternoon. See the photo.
