I think this is a previous version. Not the latest model

    • It's good though if someone needs it before christmas, 8th gen is out everywhere.

  • I believe 7th Gen. Probably should be in the title.
    is now

  • Does OW price match Costco?

I don't think so. Costco needs membership

OW was selling this for $518 when they were clearing them out

  • That's only 18.4% off RRP on clearance models and it's no bargain unless you're desperate.

Something in stock is a big plus for those wanting to get one before xmas at the moment, but yeah.

  • So apparently I need to get my daughter a iPad for school next year to help her learning in grade 3!! Wtf hey but yer this is a thing at her school

So was thinking of a Xmas present

What’s the best price for a new model one or should I wait till school starts next year for new model or discounts?

Every child should have an iPad at least from Kindy, else they'll be left behind.

Does it HAVE to be an ipad or will any device suffice? What are they going to do with it?

An ipad in a 3rd graders' hands better be well protected because they are expensive to fix.

They usually have IOS specific software that they will install on the device. Like DRM protected interactive textbooks etc.

Unfortunately the software isn't platform agnostic (because the publisher signs a contract with Apple) — so you're kinda forced into buying an Apple device, it won't run on android or x86.

I think lordra is talking about physical security. As in a 3rd grader will likely bash these around their school bag. Not to mention butter fingers.

          • @xoom: hah. We rip parents off by selling STM branded rugged cases for iPads for $45 each at the schools IT Helpdesk. They only cost us $20 each to order in bulk.

Don't tell the parents though, they'll come looking for me.

(This is a joke: we actually make no money selling this sort of stationery to students and all proceeds go to funding insurance like Accidental damage protection and insurance for the iPads)

"the software isn't platform-agnostic (because the publisher signs a contract with Apple" - this is ridiculous! How come no one is talking about this monopoly? I can't think of what the term is, but Apple is effectively preventing other players from entering the market so that they can sell more of their devices.

Good to know. I will add this to my list of why I dislike Apple.

These protect an ipad quite well and are reasonably priced - https://www.amazon.com.au/Shockproof-Convertible-Friendly-Pr…

High schools require MacBooks. It’s been a thing for a while.

BYOD means the device is up to you but totally implies Macbooks/ Laptops/Chromebooks.
Saying Macbooks only is just not true.

    • Apple has an education Portal, where you could get a ipad 8th gen for slightly cheaper than normal, for example a ipad 128gb is 610 instead of 649. It won't arrive until like 15jan though so that's your balance.

There won't be a new model (came in september), and there won't be other discounts (they are too much in demand and you'll find are out of stock everywhere).

An option I'm going with is to get an ipad air 2 used (roughly $350), and then I'll get them an 8th or 9th Gen at the end of next year. This is because most of the parental locks want you to have another apple device to control stuff (ie they can ask for more screen time, or permission to buy ingame stuff)

you can also just ask jb to price match the edu store and they did it for me last week without even needing to see any ID. Then paid it with 15% off gc from coles + 10% zippay. Was like 20% off rrp in the end.

Only reason I like getting it from the edu store is free engraving, so I can put their name and my contact details on it as it probably go missing under 1 term.

        • Wow, when they are in stock thats a pretty good deal!

        • @Frozensage I did ask, but JB staff in store wouldn't for the current iPads, saying things like no margin and commission on iPads, and they sold quickly anyway so no incentive to discount.

    • Check if your school has access to education portals through JB HiFi, School Locker etc

I just purchased 2 iPads (8gen 128gb) through School Locker for $568 each. I think they had 7gen as well.

    • Yer had to be a Apple iPad

      Thanks for the info guys

I think I’ll just get the 8th gen one for $499 and if there is a edu discount I’ll save $50ish wondering if 32gb will be enough

If purchased through Apple do the offer a warranty to any damage my daughter might cause to the iPad?

      • 64GB minimum. They're going to load a whole bunch of software onto it and before you know it, you won't have anything left.

        • So there is only 32gb or 128gb now for the 8th Gen IPad

          • @Twisty: They did the same with the iPad air as well. Crafty bastards.

  • Is the price same in store?

    • I have asked staff previously for some last chance products due to I could not find it from the store. Got the answer was most would be online only while stocks last.

  • Managed to order a silver one before all colours were out of stock online. Auburn store also out of stock for all ipads, old and new..
