There shouldn't be any actual import fees given you're already paying GST for the items, so in theory that import fees deposit should get fully refunded.

Duty. Which is different and on top of GST iirc.

If it's over $1000 then duty is charged. Which is why the title says that 3+ units requires import fees because it's over $1000 in value.

      • Not true. If coming from the US, then there's no duty, just the GST and any applicable agent fees for customs clearance due to USA/AUS Free Trade Agreement.

I know this as I've imported a few things recently that I was only charged GST and agent fees (on a $4000 purchase for a CNC).

GST gets charged on total cost + shipping (exchange rate determined at time of export from USA) and the agent fees when clearing the items.

  • Wish the 8TB one would go on sale again, one of my WD Reds in my Unraid NAS is failing and needs to be replaced.

Well it's $263. Pretty good value at about $32 a TB

      • Thanks for the heads up, it was out of stock before!

Apparently WD is a snot at warranty. You would have to send back to Amazon US.
Seagate apparently does not have this issue.

Considering the above, shucking a 16tb seagate and registering the bare drive may be a better option ($420ish).

This is what I've gathered from the comments on OzB anyway. So far I have a 16tb that I haven't shucked. And my others are sourced as bare drives. I've been eyeing that 18tb WD external but the warranty drama is putting me off.

you should be going through the retailer that sold it to you, not WD. i have had a promise from amazon US that they will cover warranty period, and i would assume amazon AU would be the same.

Similarly, my warranty experience with Amazon AU has been pretty good so far. Quick responses and easy solutions.

    • Well theres no one better for returns than Amazon, so shouldn't be an issue. Plus you buy a hard drive because of the build quality and features. If you're thinking of warranty for a premium drive, it'll just be pot luck. If its not DOA it should last years. Never had an internal drive fail on me before 6 years and both of those were entry level Seagates.

  • Great price for these, good to see internal prices coming down.

  • Showing $481.03 to me :(

    • Down to $454.06 for me as at 11:50am. Maybe fx fluctuations?

  • Actually showing $438.52 now

    • ok so now was the time to buy.
