Christmas Gift sorted to myself. Thanks Op

  • Buying an old car makes me realise I should finally get one of these, any reason to get a different one instead?

    • +5

No get this one as it has USB-C charging input rather than the proprietary charging cable on some other ones.

I have the one that's the step down from this without it, and I would have paid an extra $10 for USB-C charging.

      • Sounds good, thanks!

  • Is it the same as https://www.amazon.com.au/GOOLOO-SuperSafe-Starter-Portable-…
    except its water resistant?

  • This will come handy. Thanks

  • Thanks Op! 👍

This or the one at Costco for $79 (in store)?

    https://www.costco.com.au/Automotive/Car-Accessories/Type-S-…

    • I'd also like to know…

    • Me too!

    • +2

If you actually read the specs the Costco one peaks at 400A and the Amazon one peaks at 1500A

    • +3

These Gooloo ones come highly rated on here and elsewhere, and unless I'm mistaken - the Gooloo is better in every specification than the Costco one. It has 50% more mAh capacity, triple the CCA, comes with the 12v cigarette adapter, is water resistant and more.

Why even bother with the Costco one? Seems like a risk.

Cheers mate. Sounds good enough reason to buy this one to me!

        • Bought one in May, but haven't had a flat battery to test it up to now.

  • +2

I had previous model like a year ago, and I purchased this recently for our other car.

improvements of this: usb c charging, water resistant and comes with 12V cig outlet connector in the box unlike the other one.

Farmproject's comparison video also says Gooloo's are performing well for the price.

Though I didn't get this one, get it if you have a car. Can save your bacon (had to buy at full price when I needed it). Worth even keeping for the light and emergency phone charger.

  • Water resistant - but don't put in bucket of water :(

    • +3

Thanks for the reminder… I was just about to drop it in a bucket of water!

      • No worries - here to look out for my fellow Ozbargainers

  • Can this be used for charging a car battery?
I havent used my car for a while due to lock down.

    • +3

No this is useless as a charger. In all honesty, getting a car battery charger is a lot more useful than this thing. Keeping your car battery charged up so it wont die in the first place and you wont need this.

      • Thank you

      • +1

I believe this jump starter is more useful if you are outside of the road
and the battery is flatted out (eg. forgot to turn off the headlights)

In terms of keeping the car battery (and the car engine) healthy
I would prefer to start the car and run for few minutes every now and then even it is not going to use the car
More useful than getting a car battery charger

Just be careful about running the car if it's in a garage. CO is nasty. At least drive around the block for a bit or park it outside while doing that.

        • A car battery charger can not be used for jump starting?
          Thank you

          • @Edsanwong: A car battery charger is great if you have a dead battery but you are at home and have a power point. Put it on charger in the morning and you'll be able to drive again in the afternoon. Jumpers are good when you run out of battery outside away from home and have no acess to a power point.

          • @Edsanwong: A battery charger is designed to deliver a small charge over a long period of time, allowing the battery to absorb the charge and maintain a voltage and amperage.

The charger does not create enough amperage immediately to satisfy the needs of the starter motor, and will be unable to jumpstart the car.

            Reference: https://www.autotrader.co.za/cars/news-and-advice/automotive…

        • My apology another question Is this save to be kept inside the car, considering inside the car can be very hot during summer

          • @Edsanwong: I think just keep in the cool place inside the car (eg. under the seats or inside the passenger storage compartment?)

    • +2

It wont charge the battery, but in a pinch it should be able to jump start the car so the alternator can charge it (youll want to keep the car running a while so maybe go for a drive )

      • Thank you. D

    • The battery chargers are usually much cheaper. If you're gonna use this thing, you'll need to start your car and take it for a drive, preferrably on a highway in a lower gear (italian tuneup perhaps)

  • Thanks, great idea. Just last week I had a flat battery. I called RAA roadside assistance and they used a similar product to start my car. They tested and found nothing wrong with the battery, it just was flat. Now if that happens again I can do it myself and won’t have to wait for RAA.

Thumbnail looks like it is covered in old spider webs.

    • +1

I especially bought it for that effect as I plan to use it for the next Halloween.

      • Logical, You will be waiting a long time.

        • +1

it holds a 3 month charge, so only 3 recharges required till The Day

  • and can hold a charge for more than 3 months

So what's the advice for maintaining the unit's available charge? Should I take it out and recharge every 3 months? Maybe sooner if 3 months is so long that it won't have adequate capacity to jump start toward the end of that period?

    • +4

My experience is that even after 6 or more months, it's still at around 75% (3/4 lights) and will easily start my car several times from quite a flat car battery without a charge in between. Your experience may be different, but I suspect a top up charge every 6 months would probably be enough.

  • Any experience using this as a power bank? running some small lights/sounder on a tinnie

  • Just wondering how these compare to the mid to high $100 ones you see at your autobarn/super cheap auto locked cabinets? Is this just as good quality? Given it's purpose I just wouldn't sacrifice quality/safety for a a cheap price.

On another note, my last flat was at home - but the main use/safety would be while out and about. As someone else asked, is there any issues with these sort of chargers leaving them in your boot, or glovebox? Both would get pretty hot during a West Australian summer i presume. Are they rated for heat? No point having a spare charger if it burns/blows up your car haha.

Edit: one thing I noticed is the ones in autobahn the aligator clips are small and come out from within the unit, so retracteable? these look like a seperate adapter plug that goes into the unit and has the two aligator leads? So i presume much more bulkier, albeit if it's in your storage it shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience. Just something i noticed given what really pipped my interest with the autbahn style ones was the fact that the aligator leads pulled out from the unit (and it being so small).

    • Havent used the autobahn's but I know a guy who has a mobile repair business and he uses the gooloo for work. Combined with it being well regarded here by many dont think you can really go wrong.
