  • Does anyone have some recommendations for good 2 in 1's around this price range? This seems decent on paper but the reviews on the Dell site are a bit discouraging

Vivobook flip 2 in 1, but it is 14 inch

      • After a vivobook but my Acer Spin (13.3") still is going great so can't warrant the upgrade yet.
Which is a more portable size for a 2 in 1. Honestly a 15.6 inch tablet is a bit much.

        • This was a recent Amazon deal that I posted for the the AMD Ryzen 7 4700U(8C/8T) based Vivobook flip. Unfortunately it looks like the deal has expired/out of stock, but keep an eye out for it.

Speaking from experience with my 13" version of this laptop. TLDR: I'm a techie so was able to make this work, and am now happy with my purchase.

      GOOD:
      - the build quality is brilliant. Metal frame, nice composite body. Very solid.
      - super light and thin! (this 15" is 1.8kg and 18mm thick, which is quite good for the size)
      - thunderbolt4 is FINALLY what we need! USB C charging! Predicable speeds, brilliant Dock compatibility/features. I'm using two dell 4k panels via a HP Dock at home and I LOVE IT.

      NOTE:
      - I would strongly suggest reinstalling windows (as with any laptop). This fixed some annoying random hang up I had with two of these. It also generally improved responsiveness.
      - disregard old reviews about graphics. This is a first gen Xe, so the drivers were a bit funky at the start. A driver update has drastically improved performance and compatibility of mine.

      BAD:
      - it's thin and light. The trade off is heat/fan noise. Physics applies unfortunately.
      - the stylus is good, but has some iffy recognition issues with some app (draws even when lifted off. Could be the app issue)

Apple Macbook Air M1 will outperform this without a fan. just my 2 cent.

You are comparing the M1 against an Inspiron 2 in 1. Completely different product and class as well

@Sammyboy: I am comparing with this sentence "- it's thin and light. The trade-off is heat/fan noise. Physics applies, unfortunately."

You need to go beyond the walled garden and look at the limitations of the Apple Macbook Air M1.

          1. Your a limited to macOS, can't run Windows natively and all of the 3rd party applications it supports.
          2. You don't have the flexibility to install other operating systems, such as Linux, if the need arises.
          3. You don't have a the ability to use more then one external display
          4. Support from a lot of 3rd party devices is limited
          5. The Macbook Air M1 Thunderbolt port has limited capability and doesn't support features such as eGPU.
          6. You are a beta tester for a first generation of product transitioning from x86 to ARM. I experienced the transition from PowerPC to x86, on Apple, and it definitely wasn't smooth.
          7. Windows is viewed as the dominant operating system for PC gaming and therefore the first choice for AAA titles.

The M1 is a good chip but it's not magic. It's a fat(16 billion transistors) RISC based chip, using TSMC's latest 5nm architecture, which helps performance per watt. This means that it's expensive to manufacture and suits Apple's controlled ecosystem. The ARM RISC architecture is good at certain applications, especially in a controlled ecosystem, but it lacks the flexibility of a CISC/RISC hybrid such as X86.

@shellshocked: good luck playing AAA title on Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1, enjoy!

@bbcw1980: performance on them m1 is enviable! I would seriously consider getting one if/when:
              1) I could install Linux on them
              2)upgradable components
Since that may or may not happen, I think the one thing they are still good for is as a measuring stick. consumers shouldn't be willing to pay more than 1 macbook-air-m1-worth for a laptop with subpar build, subpar performance, subpar display, etc.
So I think this Dell is probably closer to fair price than to bargain.

@tlazolli: Intel has been milking everyone too long with 14nm. Even this "NEW" 10nm version uses too much wattage under full load at 100c. Personally, I am not a big fan of Apple products due to the same reasons above. But Apple m1 will retain its value for a long time while the dell notebook will be worthless in no time due to its cost-cutting and QC issues.
Again it is a free market, I would say Lenovo Flex 5 with 4800u are a better choice if you must compare apple to apple.

      Try the lenovo yoga range

  • Looks perfect for what a family member is looking for. What are the shipping times like? I've heard dell monitors are taking months to arrive. Is the situation the same with their laptops?

  • by the way, the same model with i5 (1135g7) and 12 gb RAM can be had for $1200 with LOVEKEANU. is i7 worth the extra bucks?
I've been keeping an eye on these. They seem alright with the metal frame, 100% srgb touchscreen display, upgradable internals.
