Apple MacBook Pro 13-Inch (2 Thunderbolt Port)/15-Inch 256GB 2018 (Space Grey) [^Refurbished] $1189/$1529 + Delivery @ JB Hi-Fi

96

Great price for the 2018 model (8th gen intel processor), get further 10%~15% off is you have GC from previous deals. Most Apple refurb products have a new outer case, so I reckon it should look brand new.

Link attached is for the 15 inch (OOS)

(UPDATE) Link for the 13 inch with 2 (WAS shown 4 on JB Website) thunderbolt ports: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/apple-macbook-pro-13-inch…

Thanks@GAMBOL
Merry Christmas everyone!

I own this one (I think.. I bought it the moment they released a proper quad core 13”).
Sure it’s not M1 but it’s a great machine and so many people use it as a portable desktop anyway so the battery life doesn’t factor in.

I recommend a UAG plasma case for it if you have kids 🙃

    • You actually want m1?

      • +1

m1 gives your way better performance and double battery life though. I am using a m1 air and its amazing

        • Oh air model, didn't read correctly. Yeah, that would be bitchin' for that.

  • +11

I would suggest just pay a bit more to get the m1chip MacBook…

Considering future proof, much faster CPU and much longer battery life.

    • +3

Possibly yes but if you are in a budget… Apple will likely support the Intel machines for at least 4-5 years owing that they still are pumping out high end machines with Intel as of today.

Another thing that is making me hesitate getting an M1 is the lack of certainty of drivers for USB stuff like FTDI/CHG/SI USB-TTL adapters that are used with Arduino and others.. I’m not sure if Rosetta 2 can work with firmware/drivers.

If anyone has one and knows feel free to pipe up.

      But it doesn’t run Windows.

      • +1

I haven’t run boot camp in years… but a valid point.
VMWare performance would probably suck for running Intel?
Heck I don’t even know if the M1 chip has anything like VT-X? I’m not aware of ARM having such standard but I’m not an authority on it.

I wonder if VMWare or QEMU can run native ARM emulation?

Would be interesting for doing raspberry Pi build jobs! ? (Wouldn’t need cross architecture compilation)

        • One of the big problems is windows 10 is not released for ARM. It isn’t even clear if MS will eventually release a licensed version or only make it available to OEMs.
There are some people experimenting with a developer version of windows for ARM running under a beta version of the Parallels virtual machine. Seems still quite flaky at this point, lot of MS apps don’t work as well as third party applications although geekbench 5 suggests even at this stage of development windows running on the M1 looks like it will be quite good once it is all sorted.

          https://www.macrumors.com/2020/12/22/m1-mac-windows-parallel…
*When running macOS Big Sur, the ‌M1‌ MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM has a single-core Geekbench score of 1719 and a multi-core score of 7384. When running Windows 10 through Parallels using the default two-core setting, the ‌M1‌ Mac achieved a single-core score of 1491 and a multi-core score of 2753.

That's pretty similar to Microsoft's own Surface Pro X in terms of multi-core performance, and better when it comes to single-core performance, so when it works, speeds aren't too bad. Parallels defaults to allowing just two cores when running Windows, but you can swap over to four core operation.

With four cores activated, multi-core Geekbench scores were much better, hitting 5013. The single-core score didn't improve quite as much at 1518. You can enable eight cores too, but going from four to eight cores did little for performance (1524 single core and 5958 multi-core).”*

      • It doesn't, but I suspect the majority of Air buyers aren't running Windows on them, nor will ever care to. Bit tight with only 256GB storage anyway.

      • Another bonus.

      • I think that's a bonus ;)

      • I thought you can install Windows using Bootcamp ?

        • They were referring to M1 Macbook Air/Pros.

$250 more gets you a brand new M1 Air with the same 256GB storage, plus a better display and substantially more performance. Considering how long-lasting the Air's typically are, it'd be worth the extra spend upfront.

    • Not too sure about the display part.

      • You're correct, was thinking of the 2018 Air which didn't get the DCI-P3 display. 2018 MBP is P3 and slightly brighter at max.

These are terrible. I've been using this laptop for almost 2 years and I hate this laptop with a passion. The keyboard is absolutely terrible. Skip, and get the gen where they fix the keyboard.

    • Forgot that the 2018 model got the older butterfly keyboard. Yet another reason to go M1.

  • +1

Yeah M1 is a great option if you don’t need 4 thunderbolt ports.

    • +1

Also M1 cannot drive 2 external monitors. For people who require that, Mac intel is their only option.

  • M1 is clearly a better choice for money.

  • +2

    Get the M1 instead

  • Not worth to buy any intel based MacBooks, they are so slow.

  • Agree with everyone. M1 rivals a 4K Macbook.
    Watch the reviews.

  • Beside the obvious advantages for m1, I think the 2018 pro still uses the controversial butterfly keyboard which could potentially cost you a trip to the store to repair

  • Really not a deal considering Refurbished, old model and other deals available.
    No offence OP. Cheers.

  • Despite the hate, the 15 inch is actually an unheard of deal for designers and developers who need a larger screen laptop, but don't want to spend $3500 for a 16 inch MacBook.

M1 looks great and all, but there will be a transition with software compatibilities for the design and dev community.

Highly recommended on the 15 inch side.
