LG 27" QHD, 144hz, 1ms IPS Gaming Monitor 27GL83A-B - $598.50 @ JB Hi-Fi

730

This monitor was $638.40 for Black Friday, and now it’s down to $598.50.

This monitor is very similar to the popular 27GL850-B.

27GL83A-B (aka 27GL83A):

  • 27" QHD (2560 x 1440) IPS display
  • 144Hz Refresh rate
  • 1ms Response time
  • 1000:1 Contrast ratio
  • G-Sync compatible
  • Wall-mountable
  • 2 x HDMI input
  • 1 x DisplayPort input

RTINGS.com says:

The LG 27GL850-B and the LG 27GL83A-B have very similar overall performance and any differences can be attributed to panel variance. The 27GL850-B has better inputs as it incorporates two USB 3.0 ports, while the 27GL83A-B has no USB ports.

Displayninja says:

The LG 27GL83A is essentially the sRGB color gamut version of the LG 27GL850 which has a wider DCI-P3 color gamut.

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2020

Anyone want to quickly drop in the comments why this is bad before i buy one cause it looks like a pretty good deal

    • +4

I love mine. But like most IPS it doesn’t handle dark scenes very well. Also it can be hit or miss with backlight bleed

But like most IPS it doesn’t handle dark scenes very well.

The tradeoff is that IPS handles bright and colourful scenes very well, not to mention that it's the best type of screen (IMO) for text.

    • Buy this.. it's absolutely insane… For the price

So far from my research. This one not worth enough if compare with Dell S2721DGF. However, you don't need to wait weeks, a month, 2 months or even more for the delivery. And 27GL83A-B accepted 4k signal, which S2721DGF doesn't.

Speaking of The Dell S2721DGF is on sale for $559.30

Should I pick up one of those instead?

S2721DGF in black Friday was $470, but you still can get it as $520 with LOVEKEANU code. Just the delivery seems already after March 2021.

There is a known issue with S2721DGF at 60Hz. rtings has confirmed it. The second last pixels appear dimmer.

          https://www.rtings.com/images/reviews/monitor/dell/s2721dgf/…

It is generally not an issue as it is unlikely you would use it at 60Hz. 120Hz or above doesn't have this issue. The panel in the Dell is LG. The IPS glow on the Dell is slightly higher than usual (even for an LG panel). However, the design and the rest of the firmware is really good on the Dell (I do wish it doesn't have that 60Hz issue, even if I hardly ever use 60Hz on that monitor). I did test it with XB1 and PS4 initially, but now I moved to XBsX and PS5, that 60Hz is no longer an issue even if I use that monitor with a console.

Not sure whether the LG monitor comes with a DisplayPort cable. It is best to use DisplayPort 1.4 with 1440p high refresh monitor, especially if you have an nVidia graphics card. El cheapo DisplayPort cable won't work properly.

          • @netsurfer: I don't understand the words that just came outa your mouth

        • If you don't mind waiting. I ordered one a while back but cancelled it because when I called to check delivery times it was much longer than stated on their website.

    • I was going to buy this at midnight but went with Dell 27 Gaming Monitor - S2721DGF for $520.15 RTINGS.com thought it was better in afew aspects but HDR Same Same but slightly cheaper if that helps. Also can be upto 165hz using DP

    • sRGB only, and it's above what should be its MSRP because JB clearly bought a bunch from elsewhere in the world during the peak of the pandemic and then tried to flip them for the same price as the 27GL850.

The 27GN850 will be here soon enough, and offer more for this price or less.

  • I'm confused, your post says 1000:1 Contrast ratio but rtings says 894:1 Native Contrast.

      Probably measured vs. claimed?

      • Ah yes, looks like that's the case.

Here's a cheaper monitor with almost the same stats:
    Acer VG271UP @ $499
    https://www.mwave.com.au/product/acer-nitro-vg272up-27-144hz…

    Comparison:
    https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/acer-vg271up-vs…

Acer VG271UP has slightly better contrast but it has bad black uniformity and cannot swivel to vertical portrait mode. I don't know whether this is worth the difference of $100 or not.

    • Did I do something wrong?

The Gigabyte G27QC 27" is also cheaper at $419 and has similar specs too.

Rather than come up with an argument you guys have nothing to say…?

      • +1

Monitors can't be compared with specs on paper.
The panels and models have large discrepancies regardless of 'specs'

  • I paid 800 for the b version and it sounds like the only difference is usb. I'd go this great price

  • Great monitor, although I'm more familiar with the 27GL850 version.

  • If you want to edit photos and video go for the 27GL850 instead. The wide gamut is important for those use cases.

  • Prefer a 32in… most are VA though

That website is a referral scam, and they grab content from multiple sources, completely unattributed.

Do not give them attention and revenue.

  • 27GL850-B is also on sale for $719 at Shopping Express ($699 on Amazon but no stock at the moment).

  • Anyone know what is LG's bright/dead pixel policy? I tried to look for it on their website but they don't seems to talk about it…

  • Sorry I am new to the whole G-Sync Freesync…

    Will this G-sync work with my G14 & 2060. Assuming i used a USB-C to DP adaptor?

    • +2

I went through this with my laptop a while back, basically you need a direct connection from the dGPU (not integrated one) to the port in order to use G-sync/freesync. If your laptop has an hdmi port that is usually directly connected to the dedicated gpu, however most usb c ports run through the igpu. You can still game use it to output the gaming but due to the extra latency from dgpu through igpu g-sync won't work. I've even tried adjusting the drivers and hidden nvidia settings and couldn't get it to work.
