      No disc drive on these.

    • +3

There's no disc drive, but if you have the file saved digitally, you should have no issues watching it on here

  • streaming - its not a dvd player

      • +2

        Your tv can play dvd's?

          • +8

@ce5himm: Ah I see now… Your tv can play Blu ray discs?

            • @Entheogen: He means his tv can stream videos. So he is thinking he is of no need for a Nvidia Shield since he found out that it has no 4K optical drive.

But then in my opinion if he is looking for a 4K bluray player then why not look intro getting an Xbox One S. It plays 4k bluray and not only that some 4K upscaling gaming if into that.

              • @hollykryten: No Atmos or DTS-X sound on X-box. Only 4K Blu-Ray player or Shield will do it properly. Some Android boxes do but quality is not the same.

  • How would it play back the 8k video files? How well does it handle the 120hz video? Anyone knows?

    • +5

There’s barely any 8k content and only a few 8k tv. By the time 8k content becomes mainstream you’d be better off upgrading to a new model.

  • +8

    These are the best

    • +1

      Yep, love mine.

    • We have a Pro and a normal TV model. I love my Pro, the normal TV model is not as smooth but still worth it.

Is this better than chromecast with google tv, or xiaomi mi box ?

    • +5

It depends on your use case. If you're just streaming, then probably no. They're all pretty comparable. If you want to run a Plex server from it, transcode 720p/1080p/2K/4K content then yes, this is infinitely better.

      • Cheers Tardvark.
Was thinking for streaming purpose only. Lookis like Google chromecast will do for now.

Comment for those who neg me because asking a genuine question: "try to wear someone else's boot"

as someone who has used both the shield tv and the mi box 4k, I can definitely say the shield is much better, and im running one of the original shields. the shield runs much more smoothly and is much more responsive, mostly due to more faster clocked cpu cores and more ram. From my understanding this would be the case against the google tv chromecast as well since that only has 4 cores at up to 1.9ghz and 2gb ram. the other key advantage of the shield tv over the mi box is software updates - the xiaomi doesnt get regular updates and the old models that i've used tend to get EOL'd in terms of updates rather quickly. my first gen shield tv is still receiving updates, i would assume the google chromecast with google tv would receive a lot of updates as well.

the mi box and the shield tv will run the same android tv interface, but the google chromecast will run the google tv interface. main difference is that on android tv, everything is separated into its apps, although the android tv platform does offer suggestions on the front page. google tv interface on the chromecast combines all app suggestions onto the same home page, you can go into apps but its more finicky and the search function is better in one way but can be annoying since some of the suggestions or searches will bring up content that you don't have access to with your existing subscriptions. the other advantage of the shield tv and mi box is that they allow you to sideload apps if its not available on the play store.

at the end of the day, its up to you what you prefer.

      • Ooooh i didn't know that!
Cheers for taking time to provide those details, Dangernoodle.

Pro version is $238 in store. Harvey Norman website crashed so ducked into my local. Heaps in stock, and ticketed special price is $238.

    • can you upload your receipt in case we need it to price match? asking for a friend =)

    • I just rang SA Gepps Cross store and it's $298.

Can I ask for a copy of the receipt please.

      • Just went to Gepps Cross, they won't price match off the receipt. Lowest I could get them to go was 290, or 285 with a discounted 25 product care warranty. I didn't bother with the warranty since my original shield is going strong still and I've had it since 2015 and I figured this new one should probably outlast it since the new ones don't have mechanical hard drives.

Couldn't quite bring myself to get a Google Chromecast with Google tv, partially because I would rather a black dongle and remote to go with the rest of my setup.

    • I called the Blacktown store and they confirmed the price is $298..

    • Perhaps he meant $328 and typed it wrong…..?

    • +3

      No, $238. Receipt here: https://imgur.com/a/8q6YzG3

      • you got lucky, it is definitely an error.

        • +1

Possibly, though there was a very large Sale ticket on the 15+ units they had in store, so maybe the Harvey Norman location itself wants to get rid of them and dropped the price even further. I'm not complaining and got lucky by going in-store and seeing the price.

Least they can do considering their website is pathetic and even in-store the prices don't match what's online either. Normally would avoid Hardly Normal for those reasons but willing to deal with the hassles for those prices.

          • @zainmastron: Lucky indeed, wouldn't price match for me :(

          • @zainmastron: Thanks for the receipt, had it price matched at Harvey Norman Coburg, Merry Christmas

            • @biggestta: @biggestta I am going to give it a shot in Coburg. Any particular staff that I should talk to?

              • @11CENTS: I didn't get her name, but she was a girl at the first desk on the right as you walk into the store.

            • @biggestta: Can you please share your receipt?
I’ll give a try to my local store
              Thanks

              • @tryingtohelp: I was turned down at Coburg, refusing to match and later said not in stock.
He did mention that I’m the third mate.
Tried at Preston, they don’t honour it either.
Surprised about the way the price match policy differs from store to store.

                • @tryingtohelp: Couldn't get a price match at SA Gepps Cross. Oh well paid $298

                • @tryingtohelp: She said it was below their cost price which was $277 and had to ask the manager to approve it before selling it to me.

        • Do you know if this deal is still happening tomorrow?

    • hey mate - can you please confirm it just scanned at 238 or did you have to ask for a price match?

      • +1

I think the $238 is a store specific pricing. Don’t try in other stores and save yourself from embarrassment:)

        • Yea that store is my nearest hence my question, might just give it a go tomorrow

          • @F1Maniac: Please let us know (or pm me) the outcome :)
Never lose the ozbargain spirit :)

          • @F1Maniac: Can you please let me know the outcome as well? Thanks :)

            • @spss: Apparently price error where they wrongly applied normal shield tv price on pro promo price. Got it for 290 in the end.

  • Does anyone know if I can play media files on portal hard drives using this device?

    • +2

Do you mean portable hard drive? Yes, it can. Also, configure this as plex media server for better experience

  • Called my local Harvey's and they confirmed price is $299…?

      confirmed price is $299…?

This comment would make sense if the switch had any media streaming capabilities at all.. and if GeForce Now was available in Australia.

      • Actually, just sideloaded Xcloud onto this beast, after receiving Xcloud invite, and being playing stuff like tomb raider and forza with incredible level of detail (ABB 50mbit broadband, ethernet wired Shield)

        • Dude….xcloud only streams in 720p for now…

          • @nico8amy: Source? Wouldn't know how to check, but looks 1080p to me

        • Could you share the link to the APK? It's weird, I can play on my phone but the NVIDIA doesn't allow it

@Coltrainz: Xbox game streaming preview and shortcut apps here:

            https://mega.nz/#F!PaJQELqY!dg3wVzOFIybj6an5Yeq7PA

            • @kirt: Which did you use? I'm having no success with the game pass app, and I hear the preview has expired? Cheers mate

              • +1

@Coltrainz: The XboxGameStreamingPreview.apk is the actual app for the Project xCloud (Preview).

XboxGameStreamingShortcut.apk is a shortcut from your home screen to the above app.

Xbox cloud streaming (Project xCloud Preview) signup is here:

                https://www.xbox.com/en-AU/xbox-game-streaming/project-xclou…

                • @kirt: Sensational, I have xcloud up and running now 🙂 Works well, though I'm getting some input lag.

Still can't get the game pass app to find games on my Xbox… Any tips? 😏

                  • +1

                    @Coltrainz: Nice ;)

I haven't heard of anyone yet being able to get the game pass app working to stream games from your local xbox using the Shield or any other non-mobile / tablet device.

                    • +1

@kirt: Thanks, that'll stop be banging my head against that wall! Appreciate the help!

  • Anyone know is the bluetooth on these works properly?
I currently use roku ultra with the app on my phone for private listening since my LG TV bluetooth has serious audio lag issues.

    • Yes it does, and you can fine tune the sync if needed.

  • This might be a stupid question. Why are these so popular, Aren't these only useful if you don't have a smart TV or am i missing something??

    • Nvidia Shield Pro is also a gaming console. All you need is a compatible game controller. Dualshock 4, Xbox One or even the Shield controller works. There's the Shield compatible games on the Nvidia store.

    • TV apps are normally quite bad, and or slow.

Two year old LG smart TV cannot stream a 4k remux movie using Plex while my three year old Roku Ultra can do it just fine.

      • -1

I don't think it's the TVs fault, Might be your internets upload and downloads speed. Who are you with and what's your speed at. Just curious?? I have a 75" LG 4K TV 2018 and I'm with Optus NBN ( 100Down and 40Up ) and i have not missed a beat on any 4k stream. Were both Tv's hard wired at the time or wireless??

        • Plex locally doesn't use internet.
even if it did im running FTTP Gigabit wired

    • Even if you have a smart tv these are useful because they tend to get updated more frequently and have a much better variety of apps. The apps are also more updated and less buggy.

I have a 2016 LG oled55b6t and LG has been very crappy with releasing software updates for this model. We got Disney plus but it stutters when running 4k on Disney plus, the interface doesn't load quickly enough for me to see anything more than two lines of preview images, nevermind clicking into something to watch and being able to watch it. Then trying to run frame interpolation on the tv to bring it to 60fps and things go downhill rather quickly.

On my old shield tv and my new shield tv on the same internet connection, no stutters at 4k on Disney plus on both simultaneously, and it frees up the TV's processor for running frame interpolation. Also the Tegra X1+ on the shield now has vp9 support and support for a bunch of new codecs compared to TVs, and because the apps get updated more frequently on Android they tend to run better with less bugs.

If your TV like my EKO has a decent Android built in you don't need this. I highly expect Nvidia to stop making these soon as TV's will have decent Android built in.

  • the pictures are all a lie. mine never came with the stand that makes it stand upright

  • Just bought one and tried to set it up but it wont detect my wifi :(

    What do?

    • +1

      Try changing your wifi frequencies.

      • Mine does both 2.4ghz and 5g simultaneously though.

  • PSA - the Shield TV tube doesn't have USB

  • Anyone know if this can play 4K HDR remuxes with PGS subtitles without transcoding?

  • For those runnings Plex on this, can you tell me the maximum HD s you managed to connect , can a USB hub help in adding more HDs?

  • Is the 10% from zip still valid? Or am I too late?
