    • what's the next best thing?

      • I use an Apple TV. Not sure of a good Android alternative sorry. Just wanted people to know before buying.

        • Apple tv can side load?

          • +1

@Zeee: Without a paid developer account apps stop working after 7 days.

        • I won't stand for this Nvidia Shield erasure.

      • +1

        Stuff running Google TV OS

      • maybe a mibox s 3rd gen ? I am leaning towards that unless anyone has a better suggestion ? I really only want it for running Kodi and a uSD card with content

I want it for travel but its for slow travel eg stay in a place for a few months or three. I use an Nvida Shield Pro at home

    • +2

Wow deal breaker, thanks for this

    • Thanks for this.

Is google Streamer okey for this sideload?

      • +3

        Yep

      • +3

Yeah Google tv streamer for 88 can do stremio 👍

    • +2

Yeah got the warning & was forced to delete flix vision, but just re installed it & works fine without the warning coming back over a week now 🤷‍♂️, other device no warning yet, Movie HD is another good one if flix goes

      • didnt last long flix deleted again & now cinema hq deleted, bezos going on the attack

        • +2

The trick is to block updates. I blocked updates on mine 3yrs ago. Never had an issue. Flixvision includes questionable injected services.

    • I have a Fire Stick 4k Max (1st Gen) nothing disabled so far. They have said they aim to do more to combat piracy.
That being said i recently bought a Google TV Streamer from the recent deals. Will be moving to Projectiviy launcher for a clean-no ads interface.
FireOS is just riddled with amazon centric content being pushed at you. Otherwise it is a good little device, with plenty of juice to run Stremio, smartYube ect.

      • You can use a launcher on your 4K max.

        • the wolf launcher works with the current gen from a little digging around. but with amazon committed to keep restricting things on fire os I don't know how long that will last. I'm surprise4d they even allow the downloader app to still be available on their app store…

      • +1

yup.. so many end users have no idea what their device is doing when they install third party software.

    • +1

didnt see this… i really only use for plex and smarttube in this area…what about stremio ? and kodi streams?

      • the apps that were blocked were explicitly for streaming pirated video - since Kodi, Plex and Jellyfin can all be used to stream your legally owned media I don't see them being blocked in future - unless there's a law passed saying you cannot stream the media you own (and only media 'rented' from companies can be streamed.. which is where most of them want us - on a pay for service or pay per stream model where no one legally owns media any more).

        • yeh this is what i figured - point to point piracy apps with no other purpose are always a fair target IMO - free for the end user, but subsidised by inbuilt malware…good riddance i say!

    • What's this mean, they're blocking Plex, or Jellyfin, or what?

    • as I posted below:

Would wait for prime day if not in a hurry as you can double dip with cashbacks.

  • +2

wating for firetv cube gen 3 or let see the price drop on Nvidia shield pro.

    • Whats so special in them?

      • More powerful hardware

        • Antique 2015 hardware.

  • +1

How can I get free to air TV on these?
The 4k max has a live TV button on the remote but it doesn't seem to do anything.

    • Streaming from the apps, yes. Over the air via an antenna, no.

      • A few years back you could enter IPTV stream and EPG URLs into the live TV app.
I'm guessing that's no longer possible.

    • Download each channel app.

    • +6

m3u iptv or tivimate + matt huismans playlists will sort you out

      • thanks - I will check them out.

    @PainToad

There's tons of streaming devices out there, if Amazon cracks down on this people will just find a random streaming stick or device that's either built on android or just use it to side load the apps again. Firestick was chosen by the people as THE device as it's easy to get. If they go ahead ahead with this it'll change nothing. How about these companies make streaming more affordable instead of charging through the nose. People are willing to pay for convenient and reasonably priced solutions like Netflix was back in the day. Spotify is a prime example of easily accessible music that's not overly priced. They won't win this war.

  • +1

    Super super unpopular opinion..

I have the new 4k max and TV streamer ($88 recently)

Yes, the firestick has superior specs, storage speed etc etc.

… but the streamer is just so so much faster and smoother, i dont know. but yeah

    • I thought streamer has better specs being recently released.

    • +5

Google tv streamer has more RAM (2gb vs 4gb) and internal Storage, plus a gigbit lan port. It is also way more customisable. FireOS is starting to become a drag.

I would say that the Google tv streamer is the stronger performer.

  • Overall, I'm generally satisfied with this Max stick, but when using Game Mode, scenes from dramas or movies appear very unnatural. I think it's because motion clarity or shake compensation is too strong. I'd like to adjust these settings, but I'm not sure how to do it.

  • +2

Stremio, with RD. You'll never go back

    • lol unsure what the thumb down is for.
Also I wouldn't use a fire stick for it.

Shield Pro only way or a CCWGTV if you want a cheaper option.

      • -4

Because Stremio might be easy to setup but relying on streams is never going to be the best option.

        • +4

4 years and counting…. Debird is the kicker ;)
4K HDR DV DA uncompressed files playing like butter

Learn a bit, save a lot.

            @hessels92:

            Learn a bit

Yeah, learn to setup a homelab and automate things.

Stremio is probably the easiest option, but not the best.

            • +1

@PainToad: Curious about in what ways it comes up short?

              • +1

@Srey: All Stremio does is scrap shaddy streaming sites and public torrent sites. Garbage in, garbage out.

Also those sources can disappear at any point. Once the debrid cache is gone, you're left with nothing.

                • @PainToad: May I ask what do you suggest if not Streamio.

                • +2

@PainToad: You clearly don't know how debrid providers work.

                  • @hessels92: Are the providers essentially home servers who have torrented the media 😀

                • +1

@PainToad: If there's no cached version on your debrid service you just request it again though? Sure, if all the source magnets are dead then you'd be outta luck but at least in my experience that isn't a common occurence.

I don't personally use Stremio/torrentio either but I do use a similar debrid implementation, just through a different front end.

It's by far the most convenient system I've found for on-demand content, but I'm keen to hear what alternative you suggest, I know there's lots of different ways to skin a car.

                  • +1

                    @Srey:

You clearly don't know how debrid providers work.

Yes, I do. They have peering agreements in place with filelockers and more shaddy video hosting sites giving faster/more reliable access.

That and many offer torrent caching.

                    Debrid providers aren't new.

Debrid aren't just for torrents. In fact originally back in the 2010s they weren't for torrents at all.

Ok cool, but you still haven't actually provided any real input on what you'd suggest as an alternative, let alone why it would be functionally better for a current Stremio/RD user.

  • I would wait for a good deal for the Google Streamer

  • This device still uses micro usb, in 2025. Also FireTV OS is a forked android and locks you to a major version with upgrades targeted for newer devices. It's a pity they go this route as otherwise it would be a great device, especially when travelling. I wish google didn't kill chrome cast, it checked all the boxes, it just needed a hw upgrade…

  • Unfortunately, it’s the same deal with nothing better for Prime Day. Maybe an extra 20% cashback on top of it, but I missed out on the better deal for the Google Streamer. I’ll go ahead and pull the trigger on a 4K Max.

  • I paid $59 for the 4k max near the end of last year

  • Is there a browser on this to watch those free reddit f1/sport streams without all the pop ups?
