All we need is a deal for napster so we can download some sweet MP3 tunes

    • +2

I was shocked to learn that Napster recently sold for $70m, didn't even know it still existed.

      • Yup.
Im actually curious why you stopped using it?

It was a more affordable itunes and spotify, before either one existed.

Does this whip the llama's ass?

    • Nope - i don't think that it does. However…

AIMP for Windows and Android is worth checking out.

      Viper4android also (requires root).

    • No, but the latest version of winamp is incredibly stable and featured.

Best player for Android 👍 great sound.

    • In terms of sound quality jetAudio+ is the best for flac songs. For the rest poweramp.

      • +1

Why is jetaudio+ better for flac?

        • It just sounds better. But totally equal for average person's ears.

    • +1

i used PowerAmp for years but have switched to USB Audio Player PRO. It uses internal DAC or external DAC to process the sound with bit perfect past through. Sound quality is notably better, especially if you use TIDA which the app supports direct streaming and MQA.

  • Pretty much in the Spotify era, what do you do with these players these days?

    • +11

Play your music collection of course.

That said; why you'd not use FooBar2000 is confusing to me…. Anywho.

Unless you like mainstream, spotify has an absolutely tiny library. (Read that, before you neg; if you DO like mainstream, its library is impressively huge).

Almost zero independant artists, and some genres are just massively unrepresented; like rapcore, hardstyle, FrenchCore, jazz, etc.

Sure, you do find the "top 50 artists" of almost any genre; but nothing like your own flac or cd collection if you're into a specific genre.

      • Thats why i prefer soundcloud and youtube.
Where do you download music nowadays?

        • +4

If the artist has a bandcamp, there, as flac is supported.

          Otherwise usenet.

That said, even modern artists i usually buy the CD, because even though I rip them, they're display pieces :)

          • +7

@MasterScythe: Buying CDs is great, support the artists you love and also get a piece to keep.

        • SLSK is still running.

          • +1

            @whyisave: Its brilliant.

But I finda lot of copyright material listed as well as independent.

The FAQ says they dont support piracy, and they "dont need more moderators"; but the amount of potential piracy is fairly high.

As a huge EDM nerd, i use it for its original 'unsigned electronic artist' uses :)

      • Isn't there an option in Spotify that allow you to play non Spotify tunes on Spotify if you already have the MP3?

You need to do it from the desktop version. Good thing about that is you can have one app with all your music.

        • Yeah but the spotify app is suuuuuper basic too.

No replaygain support, and last I checked didnt really handle CUE sheets either.

Something even the most tech un-savvy 80-90's born music lover will be using extensively.

Combine that with their low bitrate streaming and its just a big lot of no thanks from me.

In my experience, Spotify didn't have about 1/3 of my playlist due to licensing issues - some of it wasn't even that obscure. Pairing Poweramp/Foobar2k with the FLAC files I get from Deezer and other sources is perfect for me.

    • Play the stuff that's not on Spotify.

  • +2

I use this. I have no idea what a majority of the options do. So. Many.

What I do understand works great for my needs though. Don't have any need or desire to dive into things any deeper.

Grabbed this the last time it went on sale. Been using Power Amp for the past few years and it's good. I think they tried to simplify the UI a little too much over the years (I personally found it easier to navigate when I first got it), but it still does the job.

    • Sound quality is much better than the stock audio-player,
    • It seems to find track-names for unlisted tracks, and even can split "mixed DJ sets" into individual tracks somehow (don't know how this wizardry works).
    • You have a full customizable EQ at your disposal
    • Remembers where you left off listening to (which at least for me, the stock audio-player doesn't)

If you are like me, and can't seem to find most of the tracks you like on Spotify, and you grab them from somewhere like Soundcloud or Beatport, then this is the music player you want for your phone!

    • Agree with PowerAmp trying too much with the UI.
The UI was 'better' about 3-4 years ago.
      Simple.

Also, to find music, SLSK is still great ;-)

    • Agree also that the new UI isn't as good as it used to be. I've had this for a good few years now but recently stopped using it and switched to Foobar. Big fan of Foobar on the desktop, no idea why I never had it on my phone. Couldn't be happier

  • Bought it full price years ago and still use it regularly. Best mp3 app on Android by far imo.

  • personally dont really see the point in these paid music apps when vlc does the same job. plays music.

    • Vlc is missing a lot of features.

      Like replaygain tagging and reading.
Sorting by any id3 or folder metric you wish (and quickly swapping them), and things like clip protection.

That said; foobar2000 has all of that; paid is unnecessary, foobar has been building itself for over 20 years, its very advanced.

  • Good way to spend Google Rewards credits
Great way to play own music to save data/battery (SMLoader is a great way to get mp3s/flac)
I keep this app set to lower volume (pre-amp setting) to play some background music with Tv shows/podcasts (Don't pause on loss of audio focus setting)

  • I paid full price 6 years ago and the update on reverb is hectic (about a year ago). It allows you to select your audio files which is good because some MP3 apps pick out your video recording or voice recorder… I recommend disabling visualisers because it may give you an epilepsy attack.

  • I still prefer BlackPlayer. Only a couple features missing if you don't buy premium. I love being able to queue albums easily from my flac collection.

  • +1

My total preference, over all others music apps to play media content mp3s or 4s.. Scans all from your mobile media content. Awesome in the car.. Surprising performance.. enhancing my Toyota music delivering ability.. I'm a fan of Poweamp with its ability to deliver music

  • I have been using this app for years. I paid full price back in the days and never regreted it. The oaund quality is amazing. My car has a premium sound system from factory and when I plya via radio or usb vs Poweramp via Bluetooth the sound amplification is by far better. The sub give better bass and speakera sound clearer on highs and mids.

I highly recommend this app. Get it and thank me later.

  • Reminds me of winamp.

  • They also have poweramp equaliser which is in beta. But you can use it with several apps like spotify, youtube music etc. Also it is free as it is in beta right now.

  • Does anyone know if this is better than Neutron in terms of sound quality?

  • +1

Been using this for years, best player that I have found.

If you are using a phone capable of playing Hi-Res Bluetooth/Wired (with HD capable headphones of course) with a Qualcomm chip like LG, then you need to change some settings.

Settings > Audio > Output > OpenSL ES Output or Hi-Res Output > Then choose Bluetooth/USB DAC etc, etc
It will give you an option to choose the sample rate either defined by the device that you are using or you can select 24/96 or whatever you want. Granted I really only play mp3 through it using the Soundpeats Q30 Plus HD, but the difference in sound quality is night and day if this is not enabled.

  • Man, I remember being in high school in 2012 and filling out so many surveys to get enough play store balance to buy this.
This was the best app to have back on provisional licence with my sub in the car etc

    • I love car audio.
Its the one thing music lovers get to keep improving no matter how "new" cars get.

I remember my highschool days with a 100w 12"; now in my 30's and pushing more than 10x that.

      Fantastic hobby for all :)
