Focal Elegia Closed Back Headphones $599 @ Addicted To Audio

350

Screw the AirPods Max, these high end headphones would blow them out of the water when it comes to sound quality. A very good discount as well, you can't find them cheaper elsewhere

For some reason the 10+ pictures of the Daddy type guy wearing them in different scenes crack me up

    • +1

Didn't notice that till you mentioned it! I can't believe they took so many photos

    • Lol, that guy is all work and all play.

  • +2

um.. only if they did wireless..

    • Yeah, most of these high end headphones are wired in order to focus more $$$ into getting better sound quality

    • … and computational sound.

  • “Screw the AirPods Max” screw you! Least AirPods Max comes with a bra case

  • Does this come with regular (2 x 2.5mm or 3.5mm) to 3.5mm cable? Or is it a proprietary design cable like Sennheiser and others where regular 2.5mm/3.5mm ends don't go into the headphone and require a different lock mechanism?

    • +2

      They are standard 3.5mm plugs.

    • ACL covers first two years, and thats with A2A.

        • +2

It has to come with two years warranty, as per Consumer Laws. And since you're not buying from Focal directly, Addicted To Audio (as the retailer) is the one that would be responsible for this purchase. They will deal with warranty issues, should they arise. Not the responsibility of the consumer to contact the manufacturer as long as it's within the warranty period.

          • +3

            @ThatsCheap:

It has to come with two years warranty, as per Consumer Laws.

ACL does NOT specify any years. You made that up.

BTW… ACL (aka. Consumer rights & guarantees) is between retailer and consumer, “Manufacturer Warranty” is between manufacturer (or their representative) and consumer.

            • @Kazusa: Well that is not instilling a lot of hope in me. I bought the Elear as soon as they came up on Christmas eve. Now you know the trouble you have gone through would you still have bought them?

            • +1

@Kazusa: If you are dealing with A2A what does Focal have to do with it? If you bought a product from A2A why are dealing with the manufacturer? Consumer rights is clear on customers dealing with retailers.

For snapping headband it is tricky because how does A2A know you haven't caused the damage by the way you have used the headphones?

I have no idea how widespread snapping headbands are on Focal Elegia headphones. I haven't seen mass threads on stereo net about that. When Sony WH1000XM2 were cracking there were a lot more posts about cracks. It's a big call to write that Elegia have QC issues based on a few Elegia headband crack posts.

What I am writing is that it is best to follow the actual Australian consumer laws. There is a difference between consumer protection and warranty in Australia. Some things may not be covered under warranty. They may be covered under ACL but one needs to actually speak to the retailer about ACL and expected use.

        • Have you actually read the content of those links? Where does the OP in those link mention that they purchased from A2A? Where does the OP state what happened once A2A were contacted?

You can neg my comment but how about actually reading what the comment says? And reading the content of your linked urls?

Screw these not wireless, no ones cords lol.

    Awesome deal 🤝 I bought

    • what made you buy these apart
      from
      price ?

      • +2

I always wanted to add focul to my collection of cans. I have heard good things about them. This purchase was opportunistic.

  • only issue here is the weight of headphones …can anyone chime in on the weight my
others cheaper ones hd600 etc 260grm…these are 450 ish grms.
i want to get a audiophile closed headphone but scared of weight on head for extended use.

    • +2

They are my work headphones. I wear them for 10 hours without an issue.

    • As an example they are heavier than Sony WH1000X. But, they don't feel uncomfortable when worn for hours. I tend to want to take off the Sonys for a break but Elegia is comfortable for me for longer use.

@kamoy If you are in NSW and plan to go to an audio store to try out, drop by MiniDisc in Chatswood (opposite the train station). I went to Addicted to Audio in Newtown and they have stopped trials due to COVID outbreak. I tried the Elegia recently and it is definitely heavier than HD600 but nothing too crazy. Definitely not as heavy as LCD-2C.

      • i’m on gold coast qld …alas i really don’t think there’s
anything here, will go look around brisbane area. thanks for info for future when i can travel again to sydney. : (

  • Question for those audiophiles out there. Are closed or open back generally perceived to give the best sound?

    • +1

yes hd600 are amazing open ones …but they leak sound out everywhere so annoying for people
      sitting close by

    • +2

Generally open backed are favoured for sound quality. There are good reasons to choose closed headphones. Like listening in noises environment or those around you being disturbed by open back sound leak. Some people also like the closed sound but I think the more common response would be that if there is an open and closed back version of a headphone from the same manufacturer like Elegia and Elear then commonly the open is preferable. In case of Focal if I remember right Elegia is newer and has some improvements on Elear and some people prefer those improvements despite Elegia being closed back.

    • Open backs generally give you much better sense of sound stage, imaging and depth. It is particularly handy if you are using the same headphone for FPS gaming or watching movies. However the bass tends to be weaker in comparison to closed backs. It doesn't mean you cannot attain great bass. You either need to EQ (if you're open to it) or you go way up in price to get it (or looking for awhile for something good bass wise and still reasonable in price).

Closed backs tend to sound 'honky' if they are not properly tuned. But due to the seal, you get good bass easily. Most people think closed backs will be a detriment to sound stage but some headphones can be particularly good for a closed back (like the Elegia). There is a sub-category within closed backs that are 'in between'. They are categorically closed back by physical looks but tuned to be nearly as good as open backs. They do leak sound though. A good example is MDR-Z1R, HD820, etc. I am not sure about Elegia though. These 'in betweens' sound like an open back headphone (with staging, imaging, depth, etc) but with good bass reproduction.

Coming back to the Elegia, they sound extremely open and wide for a closed back. Instruments can tend to sound far away (left and right) though. There is definitely sub-bass and good in quality. Although I prefer more quantity.

Hope you find something nice soon!

This have been the best headphones sound quality wise I have ever owned. Sound quality is really really good.

    • +1

If I could afford I would buy in a heartbeat…especially after hearing this

    • +1

Same for me. I bought Elegia on a sale similar to this one. I find them amazing for this price. I have a pair of Sony WH1000XM3 that I use for travel and Elegia for home. No other headphone needed for me. Also, Elegia is really noticeably better than the WH1000XM3. I know they are different headphones but it is so much more pleasurable to listen to Elegia in comparison to WH1000XM3, and I would not call WH1000XM3 a bad headphone.

      • +1

I agree, after hearing the Elegia, the Sony WH1000XM3 sounded really crap.

        • Personally speaking and noise cancelling abilities aside, the Sony’s sound woeful to me.

  • +3

Be warned this mob don’t like returns for any reason.

    • I've had a return with them. Wasn't as simple as somewhere like JBHiFi but wasn't difficult.
