Which Are The Best Bank Websites and Apps?

I have the usual grab bag of bank accounts, financial services, credit cards, etc. and the difference in usability between all of them, both on their websites and mobile apps is significant. So, that lead me to wondering who's got the best site and best app?

What's your bank or financial institution and what has your experience of their website and/or their app been like? What do you like? What do you hate?

  • Bank Australia has a fantastic app, and they're an ethical bank.

"ethical" & "bank" are two words that don't go together

[Bank Australia's money] is never loaned to industries that do harm, like fossil fuels or live animal exports, and all of our loans are subject to our Responsible Banking Policy.

There you go. They actually have a Responsible Banking Policy.

Up bank has a great app. But they don't offer credit cards so I can't use them all the time.

CUA app was clunky on my android phone (seconds delay between each letter/number I entered) and website looked like early 2000 format. Been with them for a year and closed my accounts because of that.

  • Within the big 4 CBA is probably the best followed by Westpac

    • I wouldn't say Westpac is the best. You still have to type in a code 'cause for some reason their programmers can't do face unlock for Android phones (fingerprint scanning isn't an option on my Pixel 4)

    • I just switched for ANZ to Westpac and it's definitely worse. The latter takes a longer time to load even with fingerprint option. If it wasn't for the Shopback bonuses I would probably go back.

ING. Never had a downtime on their app or website, has PayID, great rebates with their transaction account. Probably the best in the market by far.

  • uBank app, despite horrible review on Google Play, has a simple interface that I like. However I wouldn't rate it close to best.

uBank website is also a bit dated for my liking, but still usable and not as busy as NAB website.

I had been an ING customer for the past couple of years, and their app and website are fine, but after their recent announcement ("Many of you have been asking for motivation to keep your saving habits up….."), I've switched to Macquarie. It's like a breath of fresh air; no more friggin' hoops to jump through, and their app and website are probably the best that I've ever seen.

Another vote for Macquarie. I’ve been a past UBank + ING customer also. Macquarie web + iOS app much better. Natural language search capability is tops. You can also annotate and attach files (yes) to transactions. Very helpful come tax time. Spending is automatically categorised & you can drill down within categories e.g., Food & Drink > Alcohol & Bars (useful for analytics/reporting). You can create budgets too (which are automatically proposed based on historical spend). They also have PayID now which used to be a gap.

The main con is they don’t have any physical presence (and don’t support Bank@Post) so if you need to deposit cash (rare in this day and age), good luck. I still have my ING account for that reason (doesn’t cost me anything).

I'm also keeping my ING account, just in case I ever get to travel overseas again, but for those rare cash and cheque deposits, my NAB account (also free) is more convenient in my case.

    • +1 Macquarie. Echo everything that fault mentioned above.

My partner and I have joint accounts and love being able to tag certain keywords or notes to every transaction. Makes it easy to search later on just by typing the keyword and "between 8 Dec and 20 Dec" for example or extract and filter if you're a spreadsheets kinda person like I am.

Also like that things get categorised with their presets but sdd that you can't add your own new categories.

I've kept my no fee CBA account in case I need to deposit/withdraw from an actual bank branch.

  • CBA/Bankwest has the best out of all the banks, full functionality and clean UI for both website and app. You generally pay a premium for their services though.

Westpac has a lot of functionality but the UI could be better, you have to click/press to drill down through options to get where you want to go. Mainly walls of text. Offers a lot of extra services usually placed at the top which takes up screen real estate compared to others which are either on the bottom or side and non instrusive.

St George/BOM/ANZ, same as Westpac in some cases but less text wall, more visuals, so better UI.

ING app has a very clean minimal UI and has like 95% of all the functionality you would need daily, website is also clean. Less text and visuals but still which some people would prefer, I like the ING app for the minimalist feel. Probably the best mix of cost to usability.

    • I think the bank west app is terrible compared to its competition. I can’t count the number of times I must have pressed + to send money but it takes to open a new account. I mean who opens accounts on a daily basis with the same bank 🤦

      • I've never had that problem, although I don't use it daily, only occasionally as its on my wife's account/phone

I really like the ING interface. Everything is clearly laid out and intuitive - no hunting through menus to find what you want. Straightforward and simple - and really, that's all that you want.

I think they took extra care in designing the interface - particularly given that they don't have any bricks and mortar stores.

  • I got, BankWest, ING, NAB, Westpac and Citi. Bankwest has the best app by a long shot.
