Delonghi Nespresso Pixie Coffee Machine $275 ($225 after Nespresso Cash Back) - $399 RRP

230

Just bought this the other day and the thought didn't occur to me until 2am tonight that others on OzBargainers might be interested too =) (my first bargain post!)

Ordered it on Monday, got a phone call Tuesday, expecting delivery on Thursday (today). There were 71 available when I ordered, there's 23 left as of 2:22am 15/12/2011.

It comes in silver, blue and lime. Unfortunately, black, titanium and red can only be bought from the Nespresso stores and comes with a different plate design (has a grille like design instead… search Google images for it)

Comes with the milk frother for making cappucinnos and lattes. Capsules cost about 60-80c and there are limited editions such as chocolate and cherry which they release from time to time. Capsules can be taken back to the store for recycle.

Nespresso are doing a $50 cash back promotion so the final cost would be $225. Not bad considering it's $399 RRP.

Best price I've seen from online stores is about $310+

Excellent customer service from Rhiannon from Skimp giving prompt email replies and Mark from the resulting company that is selling the item.

EDIT:

none left when I checked at 3:15pm 15-12-2011.

Here's the link for claiming the cash back for those of you that bought:

  • nice to see it at this price… btw what do you mean by "It comes in silver, blue and lime. Unfortunately, black, titanium and red can only be bought from the Nespresso stores and comes with a different plate design" ?
if buying direct from nespresso it's still RRP isnt it?

i think i'll hold on until the patents expire. :)

    • +1

      They expire in 2024 apparently…

      • According to Wikipedia :) their 70 or so patents start to expire from next year. Patents are meant to have a 20 year lifespan according to another link.. (i just googled "nespresso patent expiry")

    • slowmo, the colours that are available are silver, blue and lime. The other "exclusive" colours and slightly different design can only be bought from the store at RRP + the $50 cash back.

  • Hey - that is a good price - but compared to the cost of the the Aldi "k-fee" equivalent which was $80, I just can't see the point.

The nespresso pods can only be bought online or from a nespresso store (my local one at Doncaster often has a queue out the door). The Aldi pods can be bought at any Aldi - for 37cents per pod (16 pack for $5.99).

I've had coffee from a nespresso, and I've now coffee from the Aldi variant. The Aldi was good, and I'd happily drink it again, and again.

Hopefully this is a sign of the price of nespresso coming down in general.

nice. would love to know more feedback regarding the aldi equiv

      • I gave it to mum for her birthday. Setup was easy, coffee was good. Machine is easy to use, and doesn't look like a cheap ugly Aldi product (because it's not made exclusively for Aldi - it's a German alternate system to nespresso. Interestingly, the machine's are sold by an Aldi competitor in Germany).

I think it's good value by comparison (for a pod machine). I don't know if the coffee is better or worse than nespresso, but any coffee snob will tell you that you should be roasting and grinding your own beans anyway! It's definitely better than the instant coffee mum previously had on offer!

The key deciding factor for me is the cost of the pods. 1 month worth of coffee from Aldi @ 2 cups per day is $24 (with a few pods to spare for guests). One month worth of nespresso is $40 (@ 0.67 per pod, which is the cheapest on their website, no including postage).

Assuming the machine breaks down, it is covered by warranty (I think 1 year, but may be longer). I'm sure Aldi will have them on again in about 6 months…seems to be the usual cycle time for "special buy products", plus as they currently the only distributor for these pods, they want as many people using the machines as possible!

        • i've been using the aldi kfee machine at work for the past 3 weeks.

It is a lot bigger espresso box than my nespresso pixie at home.

as braddsey has stated, the cost of the pods was an influence as I can now have 1 or 2 cups a day at work only paying 30c each, compared to the $3 coffee van in the morning.

The unit seems solid enough, and might not be as refined as nespresso but its great for the price!

        • That's great info :) I did scan through the info on Aldi on the whirlpool site when doing research on this.

Deciding factor for me was different as it is a gift for someone for X-mas and they've been looking at the Nespresso for awhile.

yep - and if someone specifically wants a nespresso, you only look cheap going out and buying them the Aldi version!

It is a great price for the nespresso machine. Actually I purchased the same machine for mum for her birthday for $319 from goodguys, less $50 cashback so $269 (which was the best price I could find at the time). Fortunately the Aldi version came out the day before her birthday, so we got that instead, and returned the nespresso for refund. I still got the cashback though, so at this stage, and $50 win! (not intentional… but I'll take it - should nespresso ask for their money back I'll give it to them).

      • Sorry mate, the Aldi expressi is a classic case of "You get what you pay for"

        http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1322406344/17

At the end of the day…you're an ozbargainer on the internet and in a shop. No shame in that, but I don't want people coming into my house and seeing that on display.

        • you're reading a review on coffeesnobs.com.au - what do you expect they're going to say… it's tastes like liquid gold?

you may note in the review that he says the nespresso doesn't taste much better, which is the comparison machine. And his advise:
"If you are on a really tight budget and want better coffee than I could get from this machine then buy yourself a $10 plunger, a $30 grinder and some fresh coffee."

Anyway, each to their own… the coffee I tasted from the aldi machine is no worse than the coffee i tasted from the nespresso machine, at about half the price on the coffee, and minimum one third the price for the machine.

Personally I don't and won't own a pod machine for the same reasons outlined on the con's in his review:
          * 7-8 times more landfill than fresh coffee.
          * $50/kg is too expensive.

I'm no coffee snob - more than happy to buy pre-ground coffee. But for someone who wants the convenience of a pod machine, I see no problem with the Aldi. I simply cannot see any justification for paying mimimum 67cents per coffee from a nespresso!

I'm sure the nespresso machine is better quality (or at least I hope it is for minimum 3x the price).

    Still a good price.

the KRUPS deal was better than this

    • Yes, I saw that too when I was researching this. However, you're buying a EU version with an EU plug and probably have to deal with sending stuff back OS if there are warranty issues. Price-wise it's about the same but the product itself from Spain is the older Citiz machine (still in the current range though).

Not to be argumentative :) but how can you say the KRUPS deal is better when it's roughly the same price, is a different (older) model and it's not Australian stock that would make warranty issues easier?

Whatever the case, I'm sure buyers of either would be happy compared to paying RRP =)

      • +1

Everyone to their own - different wants for different ppl.

        • amazon.es comes with a 2 year international warranty. So dont necessarily need to send it back
        • EU plug isnt an issue for some ppl. Just get a cheap adapter.. I've got a heaps lying around at home.

EDIT: Just noticed this on the site , not sure if it is applicable to this deal?
"You confirm your order. To go ahead with your purchase just confirm your order online and tell us your address. A $10 Skimp fee applies when you order."

After you put in your details - it says a Harvey Norman rep will contact you re: payment & delivery.

        • oh. and it comes with the milk thing-a-ma-jig

        • Last I checked, Amazon.es was sold out

        • I only got charged $275 on my credit card. Not sure if I owe Skimp $10 or whether it's something worked out between the retailer and themselves.

    Enjoying my Aldi Expressi machine*

There is no Aldi store in SA … Sad…
Would love to try Aldi expressi though….

    • People are selling them on eBay… at inflated prices of course. But you still have the problem of getting the pods.

I'm sure it won't be too long before Aldi expands Australia wide… there's 2 stores within 1km of my house, and 7 within 4km!

Until then, you can get the Nespresso at $225 via this deal! (only 9 left though!!)

      • You can go on the waiting list - Inside word is that they will be restocking very soon!

  • +2

The truck driver just called me to say that they've arrived with for the delivery! :)

    • All ALDI? I am still waiting for stores to have it available.

    • Hi griftr, ive purchased the aldi expressi machine but the milk frother has been sold out at the 5 aldis closest to me. Have you located the milk frother anywhere?

      • HC, I got teh Nespresso Pixie and it came with a milk frother.

Can you ask Aldi to put one on hold for you when they come in?

        • Oops, my mistake. Yeh, ive asked them to call me when it comes in but the guy recorded my number down on a piece of scrap cardboard, dont know that he was serious lol. Thanks anyway!

  • +1

Finally a coffee machine for me :) Thanks Griftr…

    • hope you got one Hippo :) Appears to be sold out now :(

  • I doubt Nespresso will allow the $50 from a non-big retailer.

  • doesnt matter, it's sold out.
