Door Dash is better if you're in QLD right now as its all free delivery. Plus new sign ups net you $15 off your first 3 orders over $20. I got a Grill'd burger and large zuc fries for $10 delivered last night, then got a Zambrero burrito delivered for $5 for lunch.

Thanks for the heads up. Somehow got a 25% discount plus my $15 referral bonus so less than $10 for 2 burgers delivered not bad.

Life in lockdown ain't so bad after all!

    • Disagree, door dash is pathetic compared to the other app offerings, especially with their local support.

Not loving the bunny burger / reindeer burger promos tbh, the staff wage theft and rorting the government, claiming employees are trainees, then slowing down training to take years…

    • There is no such thing as the reindeer burger that was just a facetious comment. The bunny burger I would have no problem with, only their marketing might be a bit misguided. It's the same as eating chicken, beef or pork, its psychological, nothing more. I cant defend the wage theft but after a quick google search I have found they have tried rectify their mistake.

      • I have found they have tried rectify their mistake.

Read: "got busted and don't want to look bad".

Prices are jacked up by at least 20% though.

    • I preferred your first comment with "at least 15%" before your amended it. As according to my calculations with my local, most of the price increases seem to be between 16% and 17%. But hey, it includes delivery and if your lucky enough to have a $10 voucher it certainly makes it worth it =)

      • Well, wool stll comes from sheeps back, nothing is free.

      — this post is relevant to Menulog, Doordash, and UberEats.
Ordered Malaysian. Came to $90 with free delivery. How awesome is that!!! Free delivery… bull freaking dust. Same order picked up cost ~$60. That's a $30 premium hidden in the price… that's 50% folks!!! Do you know what's insane about all of this?… the bloody subterfuge! I do not mind paying an additional fee for delivery, platform cost, etc, however be open and honest about it. Surreptitiously inflating prices, whilst crowing from the rooftops about FREE delivery and discounts when you've hidden your premium in the price… completely disingenuous and contrary to consumer laws in other countries. Full disclosure should be mandated. Would rather know and have the choice given all the facts, than being screwed over by deception. Another example - McD order $54 with 1st order FREE delivery. Pickup from McD for the same… $46. ~17% hidden in the price not accounting for the delivery charge, which will be added on for the next order. Suffice it to say - I've stopped using all three.

      • +1

$30 is a significant price difference… My local Red Rooster had absolutely sky-high product prices + expensive delivery, and I also vote with my wallet.

      • +1

I've stopped using Ubereats for the same reason

There is definitely a price hike built into the individual food items. I compared a recent takeaway menu with UberEats app for the same restaurant and noticed a price hike across the board ranging from 20%-30%

      • Depends on the restaurant you choose, some inflate their prices and some others don't

      • +1

It’s definitely beneficial when you are only ordering for one or two people and paying just above the minimum to get a discount.

For example. Yesterday I got a Simply Grill’d with cheese and a large zucchini fries for $10 delivered. The burger alone in stores is $11 or so.

Today I got a zambreros burrito, cheese, guac delivered for $5.40, $13 in the shops.

If you are ordering large amounts then things like $15 voucher minimum spend of $20 don’t go far when you are spending $90 on food. In this instance, sign up for door dash, and make three separate orders of $30 each and you’d have only paid $45 total.

for all those considering menulog, doordash or ubereats. Please support restaurants and cafes by ordering directly. It's a win win situation. You get cheaper prices and they don't get scourged by these delivery services.

        • Yeah I've seen the light and hop in my car. Would be comfortable playing a reasonable premium but blimey I was shocked by the markups.
Just reflecting on the other posts above, it would appear that ordering for a single person, or two, might work if you score a string of discounts and buy from whomever is offering a discount at that point in time. Does not work when feeding a family of 4.

          • +1

@OrderedChaos: Yep, restaurants are simply passing on the cost of ubereats to customers. Blows my mind that some are willing to order through Ubereats, but pickup at the restaurant….

            • +1

@specks: It happens when you have voucher.

        • Note that Grill'd do this exact same thing themselves (at least at my local). Switching between pick up and delivery in their own app increases each burger price by $2, then they add $5 for delivery. They're all the same.

        • They can't compete with these vouchers even !

        • There's a burger place near me who don't offer an option to order directly.

It's either ordering pickup through uber/menulog/doordash and paying an extra 3 dollars per item or ordering in store and waiting like 10 minutes. Rather dumb.

      • I don't think this is deceptive though. Its extremely likely that restaurants have jacked up their prices to accommodate for the fees for delivery services. Most customers expect it now

        • Exactly, look at Domino's and Pizza Hut, they've done it for decades!

        • Take the subterfuge argument further… Imagine if the online tech retailers did the same - upped their prices for online. Don't think anyone would stand for that. The ACCC would have been on it in a flash. Think this should be the same for the service companies. Also, being the norm doesn't mean it's right, or that it should be allowed to perpetuate. Minor gripe in the grand scheme of things. Don't let me get started about the medical profession and their separate invoicing of 'out of pocket charges'. Geez… That's going to be an ozbargain rant soon :-).

          • @OrderedChaos: Haha yeah this post is becoming a bit more like Ozrant instead of Ozbargain =)

          • @OrderedChaos: Well if they were on a platform such as Ebay that takes commission, it would be appropriate for the store to adjust the price to how they like. I know places like The Good Guys already does this and I haven't heard anyone complain from this. I think its fair to charge extra if the company is listing in a place that takes commission out.

      • +3

I agree. I checked the Grill'd menu on the official website and compared it the Menulog one. All the prices are inflated by $2.50. Granted, not a bad delivery price, but certainly not Free. The ACCC should really look into this practice. It's deceptive marketing.

        • It all comes down to what's reasonable. The platform companies want their cake and eat it. They charge for delivery, discounts are (likely apart from business development spend) funded by the restaurant, the platform margins appear to be higher than the restaurant's own margins. Pure profit riding on the premise… people trust, and will pay anything for convenience. Now here's the kicker - the prices across platforms were in my case identical. I wonder how that magic happened? A tune comes to mind. Gimme a 'c', gimme an 'o'.
,gimme double 'l', and round off with 'u..s..i..o..n'… anyone?!?!?! :-) :-).

      • Well they do provide a service at a considerable mark up like Harvey Norman, but this guy must have found this to be good value at the time and order, I don't use them a lot these days as I know how much more I am paying but It is handy sometimes.

  • +2

I just ordered using Grill’d app and delivery was free. It uses door dash

    • +1

Just compared the prices from grilld app and menulog. Ordering from grilld was cheaper and with free delivery too. Unless you have a menulog discount code better to order directly with grilled

  • +4

Jacked prices in app to compensate for extra fees. Where is deal ??? Would order straight up if it was the same price as in store.

    • -6

Yes prices are increased, but normally your order would also attract an additional $5 delivery fee. Where's the deal? You get it $5 cheaper than if you were to normally have it delivered.

  • +6

I may be the dissenting voice here but I prefer having the option of saving a bit by making an effort to pick up from a store (so there being price variations between menulog, ubereats, deliveroo etc. etc. menus) as then customers who pick up aren't subsidizing the costs of serving those who eat with free delivery through inflated baseline product prices. I believe the whole idea for OzBargain was getting the cheapest possible product or bargain (even if it takes an extreme amount of effort ie. Maccas 'deals') and if prices are jacked up to compensate for the app eaters it goes against the OzB credo (as the starting price for products will inflate for the app costs).

    • +2

While I agree with you in principle, I think it's more about how you look at it. I'm a true Ozbargainer and of course I will drive and pick it up from the restaurant if I can save some coin. However in some circumstances this option is not available like tonight while I'm at work. Other circumstances include not having time, the car being unavailable or even drinking one too many beers but still fancy a feed etc. The point being if you value delivery as part of the product then this deal is very much valid, otherwise I agree and I would much rather drive there to save some money.

  • Does anyone want a voucher if they plan on spending $30 minimum $10 off expires tonight

  • 771T-N1M2 $10 off $30

    2891-VS9F $7 off $25

  • all these people complaining about price hikes need to understand that you're paying for the convenience of not having to get up and leave the comfort of your own home, sit in traffic, using up your petrol etc etc.

These apps will charge restaurants 20ish% (menulog/doordash) - 30%(uber eats) just for the privilege of showing up on their services, which are considered a standard part of dining nowadays. These restaurants are already operating on thin margins, unhelped by covid times, and they have to do something to make up their cost and stay open.

Also delivery is a privilege, not a right.

Just like for your parents it was a treat to get take away once a week or on special occasions, so should delivery be seen the same way. If 30 bucks for one meal is too much to justify, then maybe you're not the target demographic for these food delivery services.

My sides. How cucked can one get.

  • Doncaster not taking orders for some reason the last few attempts, was able to order once, any others finding the same issue?
