Man f@&k the Aus Open. They should be bringing Australians stranded abroad home, not making special provisions and entries for 1200 prima donna’s and their entourages.

In a capitalist country, what would organisers choose. Making massive amounts of cash or bringing back potential risk cases from their long Thailand holidays. Hmmm…

      • If you were in Thailand you'd be better if staying there, less cases than Aus.

I'd be more concerned with people coming back from the US and England

      • +4

Typical caps. Externalising costs, depending on infrastructure paid for by the rest of society, then "But I did it all myself, I got no help, the money's mine."

    • and when the damage is done, we're left behind to pick up the pieces of their mistakes

  • +35

Anybody from the US shouldn't be allowed in. Or anywhere else where Covid has essentially crippled the health service. It's totally illogical.

  • +17

It's obvious isn't it - one set of rules for the tax paying plebs and another for the elites

    • +2

Yep that's why the F1 got delayed to November

      • +4

I suspect F1 refused to quarantine for 14 days? They are normally in the country for 1 week.

Just be aware the feed on the website is at least 5 seconds behind Bet365 when I checked.

  • +5

Isnt this also streaming on 9Now?

Federer not playing, so not watching this year

    • +5

If Federer stopped watching tennis cause his favourite player stopped playing he wouldn’t be Federer today..

  • +12

Why the hell are we allowing this???!?!?! 1200+ non-Australians flying into the country and potentially bringing a virus that will kill people, like your mum and dad or pops and nan or all …..

Guess ScoMo is weak on borders even show ponying each day saying he is.

    • +6

Its the beauty of one word - Capitalism

You guy in NSW are hardly going to get into issues. Spare a thought for us Melbournians who just came out of what felt like the longest lockdown in the world, we could very well get back in lockdown again…

    • +2

The cost being $40 million to quarantine and run this event, seriously hope this does not get billed to the tax payer later.

It seems they already had a test run in Doha, why would you risk it?

"Anxiety about infection leakage from the tournament came as Tennis Australia confirmed two tennis stars playing in the Doha qualification tournament were reported as testing positive to COVID-19."

Thanks for posting I didn't realise and been watching scores online …can people keep their politics.for facebook. Comment on the deal but leave it at that.

    • +8

      This is ozb so no

    • +1

Not really a deal. Isn't Aus Open always broadcast live on TV?

      • +4

        The Qualifiers? No

    • +1

You denying me of my right to the first amendment?

      • +3

According to a trusty source, the first amendment to the constitution is thus:

"The amendment moved the date of the beginning of the term of members of the Senate from 1 January to 1 July so that elections to the federal House of Representatives and the Senate could occur simultaneously."

Not sure how previous comments undermine your right to this amendment (but I am no legal scholar…)

        • Why can I only + vote this once!!!

        • I like to vote twice that's how

  • +5

There is always risk. I think they're doing everything they can to mitigate the risks through strict quarantine protocols etc. Imagine how many Australian jobs will be lost if this is cancelled. Not to mention the morale boosts and giving people a sense of normalcy.

The entire thing is funded privately so hopefully tax payer is not paying for it too much

    • +3

My understanding is that Tennis Australia will receive some financial assistance from a government (not sure if state or federal).

    • +9

A global pandemic is not normal and giving people a sense of normalcy is wrong.
The event runs for 2 weeks so risking the health of the entire state for a couple of weeks of employment is stupid.
Tennis Australia is not entirely privately funded. Large organisations like TA milk the tax payer for every cent they can rort from the Govt.

It's great that these professionals participate to enhance our lives. Watching the cricket and tennis and golf has been fantastic. I can only respect these people for the effort they make to provide us some normality.

  • Novak better follow the rules and not hit anyone

  • +5

The stream don't work? They only play a 16 second video for me and then stop.

  • Time for some EMDR therapy then.

  • Could I be a linesman OP?

  • +5

Why would entitled pampered tennis snobs follow health officials advice for 2 weeks?

    • +1

      YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!

  • Is this better than buffstreams?

  • Since when was Aus Open no longer on FTA? 🤔☹️

    • They've always been in FTA as long as I can remember, Nine in the last couple of years and Seven before that (along with their sister channels). These are the qualifiers, which usually aren't televised.

breaking news that Andy Murray has been tested positive!
    and
another tennis player from the US is allowed to come even though testing covid positive a few days ago … seriously WTF?? when will the lives of australians matter more than a lousy tennis game.

    • Doesn't surprise me

      This should have been cancelled.

  • If they close the roof at Rod Laver/Vodafone arena then do the players have to wear masks?
