Free: Send 10MB of Data to The Moon (Limit 100,000 People) @ Reddit

1700

I have no idea what category to put this under, so I'm going with travel as I know it. Apologies to mods if wrong.

A user on reddit has purchased a 'Moonbox' from NASA contractor Astrobotic last October.

"In it I'm planning to put two 1TB microSD cards for a project of mine. This ended up being way more space than the project required. One of the cards is completely empty!

Therefore I'm giving out 10MB of storage space for free on a first come, first serve, limited supply basis. Again, I'm doing this completely for free and asking for nothing in return."

Rules:

  1. Your Reddit account must have been created prior to January 25th, 2021.
  2. You can send 10MB in images, video, audio, and/or text. It's up to you how you want to divide this up, but please keep submissions within 10MB. I'm happy to compress your files if you know a compressed version is <10mb
  3. Submissions that are..
3a. Images/Video/Audio must be loaded to an image host such as imgur.com or a video host such as vimeo.com. You would send me the link to the Image/Video/Audio file when you're ready to make your submission.
3b. Text can be commented below or sent in a PM to me. Just make it clear by saying you want your message sent to the Moon.
  4. All submissions must be SFW & legal. Be mindful of copyright & distribution laws.
  5. All submissions must be sent by February 8th, 2021.

This is going to end horribly amazing while also summarising humanity perfectly.

Edit: just looked through the comments and there's quite a few serious/genuine ones too. Redditors surprise me sometimes.

    • +10

It's in /r/space so it's a tad different to thedonald or something with degenerates. Also, it's one of the most unique things I've seen since sh*ttywatercolour guy that knocked about.

        • +2

But to get to it, you need to go through space?

            • @[Deactivated]:

Would you call 1000000 molecules of hydrogen packed into a cubic centimetre 'space'? I'd call it hydrogen. :)

TBF, there isn't much 'space' in 1 cc.

            • +3

@[Deactivated]: I call it nitpicking at best, plain wrong at worst.

              https://www.space.com/24870-what-is-space.html

From the perspective of an Earthling, outer space is a zone that occurs about 100 kilometers (60 miles) above the planet, where there is no appreciable air to breathe or to scatter light. In that area, blue gives way to black because oxygen molecules are not in enough abundance to make the sky blue

              Also this

              https://www.dictionary.com/browse/space

              space

of, relating to, or concerned with outer space or deep space:
              a space mission.

Outer space is linked, to take you to

              https://www.dictionary.com/browse/outer-space

              outer space

space beyond the atmosphere of the earth.

                • +3

@[Deactivated]: Ah yeah. NASA doesn't have a clue about space. Even their definition is off, right?

                  https://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/k-4/dictionary/Spa…

                  Space
                  the region beyond Earth's atmosphere

                  Should we keep going?

                  • -8

@b2dz: Sure. You quoted 100km above and now say beyond Earth's atmosphere. Which one is it or does it alter for gelflings? The Sun is a region beyond Earth's atmosphere. That's a whole lot of star to be classified as space. The Sun is not space nor in outer space. It's the dense centre of a solar system and you want to call it space? It probably doesn't meet your blueness definition unless you stare at it too long and smell burning.

                    • +6

@[Deactivated]: I don't know, I'm not an expert and not pretending to be one, nor trying to dig myself out of a ridiculous point i was trying to make trying to sound smart on a forum. But I have faith that NASA may know what they're talking about. If you must keep digging, here's an interesting article that explains some of the different common interpretations of space including the Karman line which is used in aviation, other military definitions and also to escape it completely, you may need to travel up to 600miles.

                      https://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/content/where-space#

None of which get anywhere close to say "space" is more than 380,000km away, which is the average distance to the moon from Earth, which is what your original point was.

                      • -3

@b2dz: Do you see the funny side of saying the BU60-1 balloon almost reached outer space?

                        • +4

@[Deactivated]: Do you see the funny side if saying that 380,000km away is not space - your original point, Professor?

                          • -6

@b2dz: You defining space in distances is hilarious, yes.

                            • +5

                              @[Deactivated]: OK Professor

                              • @b2dz: You're welcome, Gilligan.

        • +12

The surface of the moon is not space.

Reddit is made up of specialised interest groups called 'subreddits' so the one I'm mentioning is called /r/space which is a subreddit that this post is featured on! Have a look for similar content that revolves around the subject matter.

Glad to see you understand that the moon is an object with a surface, there's plenty more neat info there for you to tackle!

        • +2

The surface of the moon is not space

I've checked comments above, OP and link and nowhere is anyone claiming the surface of the moon is space. The only reference to space is the 1TB of space on the spare microSD card. Unless you're stating moon topics shouldn't be in r/space? I don't see the relevance of this comment.

          • @blorx: "I don't see the relevance of this commit."

You also didn't see the obvious "collapsed - off topic" description when you pressed the button to expand this, did you? You also missed a scintillating Milton's Paradise Lost recital.

      • +1

Except now it's been linked here. :D

    • +2

I'd say this is a pretty good challenge for 4chan trolls.

    • When one day aliens visit the moon and analyse the data stored, they will conclude that homosapiens are a bunch of garbage collectors, garbage in, garbage out.

  • +63

    Free Cloud storage!

    • +26

Space is clearly limited though XD

      • This is more Space Storage where you have a high chance of running out of space.

      • At least this time it's not just another Google moonshot.

    • Sky's the limit?

  • Is the sd card battle hardened because the magic smoke will get freed if the alien gets too excited and opens it in space

  • +16

"copyright & distribution laws" don't apply to the moon.

  • +18

The logistics of having 100,000 people send him data and then him placing that on SD cards scares me.

I'd rather purchase a google drive account and allow each user to upload 10mb of data, then once it's full download the contents.

    • +24

It's pretty easy to just say that you'll do it and then not. It's not like anyone is going to visit the moon to check.

      • +3

What happens when Elon lands his personal shuttle on the moon and pops the as card into his computer?

        • +12

"First Man To Be Rick Rolled On The Moon"

    • +6

Yeah the practicalities of this have not been thought through.

Even if it took only 30 seconds per person to process the data it would require working for 835hrs non stop work to process it all.

      Cool idea but..

  • +81

    Alien opens SD card
    gets rick rolled

How much of the 1TB will be porn I wonder

    • +7

All submissions must be SFW & legal.

      None.

    • +1

      all of it

    • +8

They said no nsfw content. but somebody uploaded the entire shrek movie in a gif

      • +12

        Not Shrek For Work

      • Someone compressed the full movie Shrek to fit on a floppy disk

        https://www.reddit.com/r/raspberry_pi/comments/kkzpuk/i_crea…

Pity about the no copyrighted items, otherwise you could have sent up 7 copies of Shrek in that 10MB or try something more ambitious like The Lord of the Rings series in under 10MB

  • +3

Isn't it just going to get irradiated and corrupted?

  • +2

I wonder if moontians dig earthling p*rn/nudity?

    • Goodbye…moonmen.

  • +7

    More spacejunk! marvelous.

    • +4

Seems odd that in the age of ecological sustainability, a lot of people seem to be embracing the burning of tonnes of rocket fuel simply to dump rubbish on the moon.

      • +7

I gave up on believing humans care about ecological sustainability, when on ozbargain there was a thread with people clambering to order Voss water delivered for $3 a bottle via Amazon US.

A bottle of Norwegian water, bulked shipped to the US, to be individually air freighted to Australia, then couriered to your door for $3.

People don’t care about the planet, in spite of what their cardboard sign at a rally says.

        • +2

          The bottle is reusable.

          • @AustriaBargain: And the one at Coles/Woolies isn't? I mean it's still Norweigan water freighted to Australia but at least it's not having to be individually sent over from America.

            • -2

@pennypincher98: Meh, the plane was going to fly here anyway. So at least they mitigated a few cents of of the fuel cost.

    • I don't think dick pics are allowed ;)

  • Pornhub clips to be sent over?

    • +3

      10mb lol more like a Picture of a D I C K.

      • Pretty low resolution photo of a d I c k 😂

        • +3

          Maybe its just a small D l C K

          • @jastreb: You guys are nuts!

            • +2

@Click_It: You might be onto something there. Perhaps it was just NUTS and no DlCK.

  • +5

I'll be over the moon if that happens

  • -8

I have no idea what category to put this under

    Spam?

  • +2

can you access it on the moon, I have a few wallet codes to put for safe keeping. Is it public?

  • +13

/r/wallstreetbets wants to send GME to the moon.
    Now they literally can.

    • +2

I snorted way too hard at this

  • +1

Literally send bitcoin to the moon.

  • 1TB of reddit dicks.

    • +2

Great, that leaves about 999.98GB to fill.

    • /r/spacedicks

  • If only DNA sequencing was smaller! 😂

  • +2

    Put my bitcoin on it.

    • How many years did folks here poo poo Bitcoin and crypto? Would love to revisit those old forums and see the people trashing it. They missed a golden opportunity!

      • -1

Lots of idiots on here that still do lol

        • BTC/Crypto goes through predicable cycles. Every bear cycle the haters come out. During the bull cycles a few hang around and look extra silly.

          • @Click_It: That could go both ways,

Every bear bull cycle the haters fanboys come out. During the bull bear cycles a few hang around and look extra silly.

    • Hah! Maybe 1 Satoshi only. TO THE MOON! rocket emoji

  • Send to the moon to whom? Does someone live there?

    • Yes, Hitler.

  • What for? Like no one would open it.
    Waste of time/energy imo.
Like, would you say to your friends 'I sent 10mb of data to the moon'
    Friends : righteo.

    • +17

Might send this comment to the moon

    • How do you know that no one will open it?

    • What a great idea let's send "You either can't read this or don't care lol" to the moon.

  • +3

I'm submitting a very compressed video of Big Man Scotty to the moon. Possibly the JV family portraits if there's room left.

Fun idea but I own microSD cards that have failed after 10 years of sitting in a drawer (i.e. not exposed to the harsh conditions of space…)

    • +1

Someone should rip, compress, and send an Idiocracy DVD. At the rate humanity is regressing, by the time someone rediscovers it, it will be considered the holy grain of all human knowledge.

  • +1

    cool

how much are these moon boxes?

    • +1

I'm also wondering the same thing. Cost, dimensions, material of the box, list goes on…

  • I would have just sent the OzBargain T-shirt competition recent winning designs…

  • Is that the only way to protect it from Chinese and Russian hackers?

  • +1

How many eneloops can I fit in 10mb?

  • +1

I only need ~800kb. Imagine a virus on the moon :D
ed; looking back at it, this is damn stupid. Sending garbage to the moon. Send it to the sun.

  • Did someone already post a photo of the earth being flat? Don't want to make a duplicate upload post

  • Cool! I will send some ass pics for the ultimate moon landing

  • IPFS testing? Sending the passphrase to my cryptos…

    • u do know the recipient will read that before
putting it on the drive eh?

  • It would be nice if someone could send my Z1P stonks to the moon. It needs more rockets 🚀

  • How about I give you my crypto addresses for safe keeping!

Just might need them back one day.
