The price of this router was hovering around 300 AUD but has dropped to 258 AUD today. This is not a UK product which will be shipped to Australia but rather sold and shipped from Amazon AU.

I see that the rock bottom price was 239 AUD and that too when WFH was not a reality for the majority of the crowd :)

In that context this is a sweet spot!!

  • Had one of these. a known issue of the router is that the 2.4ghz can become unreliable/unsteady. Mine did it after 6 months. Depends if you use the 2.4ghz much. Otherwise works great!
Get merlin firmware on it too.

it is 2021, I would recommend buying a wifi-6 router.

    • What is your recommended wifi-6 router for under $300 that has sufficient grunt to run vpn on the router and have good features? I suspect this router and a wifi6 ap will be the best option for some time.

      • Xiaomi AX3600 only around 120 AUD.

For people already having existing Asus routers
probably worth getting Asus as the primary router and setup AiMesh

How many AX devices do you have or are likely to have in the next 3-5 years ?

I don't have any so I bought this after my R7000 started dying a few months ago. The view on Whirlpool seems to be that most "modern" routers will only last 3-5 years before the capacitors etc start to swell and reliability declines, so my 5 year old R7000 had had a decent innings apparently. The days of routers lasting 12 years like my old Netgear DG 834 seem to be gone forever.

And this is a better price than I got on Black Friday.

  • Would be a great price if this is AX86U

  • Im still using my RT-AC68U working fine in 2021

    • Same. I'm wondering if I should upgrade its literally been 7 years.

      • Same for me. The RT-AC68u has been an excellent device. Just thinking when would be a good time to upgrade.

          No need to upgrade.

If it works for you why?

Unless you want faster speed? But surely your 2.4G and 5ghz works fine?

          Only upgrade if it dies

          • @Turd: Based response, of course my logic says this as well, but you know… We are OzBargain'ers for a reason lol

  • Is this good enough for NAS?

  • Does this work with phone line?

    • Only if you use a VDSL2 modem.

      VDSL2 modem + Asus RT-AC86U.

      • Oh okay, how would that work? Cause i only have a tpg proprietary cable for nbn

        • Is that TPG FTTB or NBN HFC with TPG?

We need some deals for Asus RT-AX88U router, it is now +$100 than it was last year

  • Any idea why nowadays router is build like a shape of alien spaceship? Does it help with wifi signal or something. Like ax88u or the ax11000?

  • Hi all, looking to replace my ailing D7000 and wondering if this does VLAN tagging (I’m on Future BB)

    • RT-AC86U supports VLAN 802.1q.

  • Can someone who has bought this from Amazon AU advise if this comes with a AU plug or adapter?

Can't find a clear answer anywhere

What adapter do people use for continual device use when needed?

  • This comes with an AU adapter. They have three inter changeable tips and there is one for Australia.
