I was really surprised at the low quality of frames and optical services at Specsavers. Once they tested my vision with my new lenses it was worse than without lenses. The frames were an embarrassment as to the quality. The whole thing sits unused in the cupboard, never again. At the point the vision was worse off, but prior to purchase they should have let me know not to proceed, instead telling me my eyes need to adjust over time… You know that triangle where you can pick 2 options from 3 choices; Good service, Good Price, Good Quality. I only got to pick half an option, service, as the salesperson was nice, but I guess they go the extra mile pre-sale because they know the customer is about to be suckered and feel bad about the rest of the process about to unfold.

Verdict: Cheap & Not-cheerful all the way. Half a star out of 10.

Now, please welcome the 'My glasses were perfect, especially for the price' people.

I have a feeling this is a story well known to those who buy from specsavers across the board,

What specsavers have as a slight advantage is the ability to try on frames, thats about it otherwise they would majorly suffer against the online market.

    • Were you buying the cheap specsavers branded frames by any chance? It's kind of a "you get what you pay for" in terms of quality when it comes to frames. Although some of them you are just paying for the name and not quality.
Also there is a 3 month replacement on the lenses if they don't work for you and they will fully redo the test to make sure it's right.
So I think you may have messed up by not speaking up straight away or soon after the "adjustment period" they talk about. You could have got a full replacement for the lenses but it was up to you to get it sorted.

      • Hi. No I didn't get the name brands. At the time of the appointment I mentioned that the vision is worse, so the test was re-done, and then another contrast test. It was still worse, but I was told my eyes would adjust. My stupidity for believing it.

When I bought mine they fully give you a little warranty booklet thing which says that you get a 3 month guarantee on lenses, frames and prescription. You should have gone back in during the 2nd month or whenever and got them replaced and redone for free. Don't just put up with things like that and blame the company when they literally have things in place for problems like that.

          • @Bread Pitt: I didn't get the warranty booklet. I got told that it may takes months for my eyes to adjust. You should have told me this info when I purchased them.

            • @Heaps for Cheaps: They almost definitely would have told you that. It would be in the bag they gave you with the glasses.

What is the Ozbargain go-to for specs? Is there a reputable online one?

zenni and clearly seem to be the go-tos.

zenni can get quite expensive with lens add-ons.
clearly have more regular discounts on lens (they just sent me an email for 40% lens upgrades) but have more limited options.

None of the staff seemed to have a clue about anything. I think they’re having a high turnover of staff and it shows.I won’t be back.

I think its a commission based sales business which is the totally wrong model for medical devices dont you think?

  • I used to only go to specsavers but had a horrible customer service experience when a lens came out due to a screw coming loose in the frames (frames are crappy quality). Not going back.

Their cheap frames don't even have hinged joints. The $4 readers I get from amazon have these and are more comfortable. I get the eye check at specsavers because hbf allow a free pair every year, in fact i can get driving glasses and reading glasses together. Don't use them though as the amazon glasses are more comfortable and my vision is pretty much the same in both eyes, no prescription needed.

    • Now that's a good tip for us. Thanks :)
