    usually a display model, id kinda try to find out how long its been out for, battery would be the first concern, laptop would be always plugged in so battery is constantly at full charge

      I've bought a few ex-demos (one from Centecom); they usually pull the battery out.

  I've bought ex demo without issue. The last demo PC I bought was a cheapie that ran fine for about 5 years until I sold it.
  
  Usually they just sit there on display without the battery installed, idling.
  
  Look for burnt out pixels or screen burn in, put it under some load and listen for weird noises. Otherwise, it should be fine.
