    What a rip off

Surface docks are absolute garbage. If you have a Surface with Usb-c, get one a Usb-c dock instead.

    • If you have a Surface with Usb-c
Like all except recent models, mine doesn't so this is only option I know of.

There's also the $121 Microsoft Surface USB-C Travel Hub from this merchant.

      • Or save $21 and buy it here

Can’t do USB-C out display though

        • why is the VGA port still a thing? It's max res is 1920x1200 which is far lower than the Surface native res.

That and I haven't seen a monitor with VGA in quite a while.

    • is there a usb-c dock that do 3 DP+ displays?

      • Most of Dell's docks can.

So buy a dell dock that is similarly priced to the Microsoft one and lose the usbc connecter as well as a native interface for more wires and driver support issues down the road?

No thanks. I have different surface pro gens and having just to unplug one and plug another and get instant access to the same hardware and accessories is the best workflow that I have.

Fwiw, the dock2 has usbc connectors for any other needs (which also takes the mbp usbc adapter that I have )

          • @slowmo: Dell's docks can be gotten for significantly cheaper than this.

You don't lose any USB C connectors. They come with more of their own. And it doesn't require drivers to be installed either. You asked which USB C docks can do 3 DPs. A USB C dock is obviously going to use up the USB C port. But you get one or two back in the dock.

The number of wires will be no more than the Suface dock.

Your call though. You asked what docks can do 3 DP displays. I answered your question. I'm not sure what more you're asking for. A compeltely wireless dock that doesn't use any ports?

This is exactly what every dock does. And since they use USB C instead of Surface connect, they support any device that uses USB C, not just Surface devices. You can charge your Switch or other USB C devices with it. You can't plug other laptops into your surface dock.

As do the Dell docks. Pretty much everything you've said about them is wrong.

            • @lostn: Fair enough, I don’t know enough about dell docs, which models to look at first?

              When I looked I can’t anything cheaper than $270 (excl delivery )

    • I've used 2 dock 1 modules for 3 years with no issues after having one rpeelced. Have dock 2 and it also works fine. The price is a rip off though, much like everything surface

    • Beware of USB-C docking stations, they are not necessarily the solution for all.

USB-C is the type of connector. Depending on your machine you may have three situations:
      - USB-C with Thunderbolt interface, then buy a thunderbolt docking station
      - USB-C with displayport support, then buy a USB-C docking station and enjoy
      - generic USB-C interface, here it may be trouble. The video signal in this case is provided through displaylink drivers, that requires signal compression between computer and docking station. This may lead to high CPU usage, particularly if you go for 4K or multiple displays.

I have a Surface Pro 6 and I use both a Surface Dock 2 and a Dell D6000 (through surface connect to USB-C adapter). The last one is mostly rubbish leading to noticeable PC slowdown. In some cases I experienced even video signal lagging behind user input. I cannot speak for the latest Surface with integrate USB-C connection, but I know for sure that is not thunderbolt.

      • I haven't had too many problems with single displays, or dual 1080p displays, but I could never get dual DP 1440p to work consistently on my Surface docks.

        I have a SB2 15 and a Surface Pro 6.

        • With a level of confidence I can say is the quality of your dp cables.

I run surface pro3/5/7 and laptop 2 on both dock 1 and dock 2s on both 2 monitor and 3 monitor configurations (this is over a period of time, not just one off)
I even ran the 2 monitors off hdmi -> dp cables on dock1s

Monitors I used were dell 3xu2414s and 2xu2201s (the latter model # is from memory I might be wrong)

Having 3 external monitors , a myriad USB accessory and giga internet plus enough grunt to charge other things is way better than some of the “use a usbc dock” options imo

  • Can't see the value in this when something like a wavlink or plugable work just as well for around $100.00. I think the only difference is this powers the Surface.

I have the original Surface Dock and it’s been excellent. Is it worth upgrading or are the improvements not worth it? I’d only go Microsoft accessories as like with Apple If you get the manufactures accessories they work seamlessly unlike with other branded ‘compatible’ products.. well in my experience anyway

  • My surface dock Ethernet drops off sometimes when my surface wakes from sleep.

    • I had this happen a few times when I first got my surface dock. I contacted MS support and they got me to run the latest updates on my Surface Pro and it’s never happened again since. You’ve probably done this but If not it may work for you also

Just incase anyone was wondering, the surface dock 2 vs the original has the main benefit of delivering more power via the proprietary port than the original. My surfacebook 2 would slowly drain power under load if i had the older dock. You also get USB-C vs minidisplayport input which is a major upside as well.

For everyone saying "why bother get a USB-dock". The usb-C on surfacebook computers isnt thunderbolt compatible, and when i rigged a USB-C dock/KVM setup it would glitch out visually on the screen and shake/stutter so i was forced down this route and haven't had an issue yet.

Also if you can be bothered waiting its cheaper via microsoft US using a mail redircting service like Shopmate.

Roughly $221australian for item + $35-40 for shipping/handling. (Note not an australian warranty)

  • They old one apparently can't power the Surface Book 2 GPU completely when under full load and this compromises performance.

I've now got a Surface Book 3 and the new dock and it seems to be working well, except the monitors at work don't take usb-c inputs..

    • This is 199W.

    • you can still get usb-c to mini DP cables in most places. so it's not that bad.

i have both the new an old dock. both supports 3x DP+ external displays daisy chained.
the gigabit ethernet port and other accessories don't need to run off a single usb-c port unlike the instance of using a usb-c dock.
