This just hit the app store and will probably be pulled by Apple due to their app store policies (eg http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10277725-233.html)

The bargain is not only the free app but the thousands of roms you can play for free by using this app!

bsdll's guide (thanks!):

Search for and download a file called "mame37b7_roms.zip". You'll have to do that bit for yourself, don't worry it's easy to find.

Copy the zip file somewhere, and call it "rom.zip". Also extract the file into seperate folder (which will give you tons of zip files).

Install some program to view your phone. iExplorer, i-FunBox are two free well known programs. Personally I use i-FunBox.

Navigate to "User Applications -> iMame -> Documents". Copy all of the zip files into there.

Navigate to "User Applications -> iMame -> iMAME.app". Copy the rom.zip file into there.

Open iMame on the phone. Press Option, then Options, scroll to the bottom and tap Rescan All ROMS.

Enjoy.

    Superb to OP,
    Use iExplorer to navigate to the iMame folder
    simply replace ROMS.zip with another of your choosing, containing the roms you want!

    blasting away happily on 1941 here :-)

      you need to look in the below directories

      ROM's are basically disk images of old games. You use the emulator to play games by pointing them at these things. You can download lots of old games at various old websites, a simple google search will bring up something like http://www.rom-world.com/dl.php?name=MAME - you download these files and follow bleaugh's instructions above to install them.

    I thought all apps are screened before being allowed on the app store o_O .. must have slipped through the net.

      They are, so it's been officially approved.

      It will only be pulled if some other company files a DMCA takedown if it infringes copyrights.

      As no ROMs are included, hopefully that won't happen.

      (Or some other stupid reason: VLC was pulled, not because of Apple, but because a stickler for rules found the GPLv3 didn't allow it.)

    Something odd about it because I can't find it as a search in app store under the name, or the programmers name directly on my Ipad. Maybe was uploaded through different channels?

        yes i downloaded a zip file from romworld, then copy pasted into iphone (i use ifunbox), the same folder where i saw the other original roms comes by the apps (circus,etc). cant be wrong. also the apps found the new rom, but when i press "B" to select, it gives me above error

      You MUST stick to rom set 0.37b5. All roms from that set will work flawlessly.

    Update:

    On my iPhone 4S I can search "iMAME" in App Store and it successfully download and installed this afternoon.

    When I get home and do the same with my iPad2 it doesn't show up.

    However the above iTunes link still works and it brings my iPad2 to the download page!

      I think you have to put your zipped roms in a zip file called roms.zip in Apps/iMAME/iMAME.app/
