Woolworths will relaunch its hugely popular Discovery Garden seedling kits on Wednesday in stores across Australia, months after shoppers went wild for Disney+ Ooshies mini collectables.

Shoppers can bag a seedling kit - which contains seeds, a compostable pot, biodegradable seed mat and pellet pod - with every $30 spent at the checkout online and in-store.

Of the 24 vegetable, herb and flowering plant varieties in the new collection, 21 seedlings are bee-attracting.

          I had the mold problem too. Next time I'll microwave both the pot and soil pellet to kill any pathogens but I wish the supplier would do this before shipping to Woolies.

            @scottishdave: Good soil contains living microorganisms that feed plants. I suspect that microwaving the soil pellet will leave you with little 'nutrition' for your seedlings.

              @jazzninja: Seed raising mix doesn't need any nutrients, and often they don't. Most commercial seed mixes is a mixture of peat and vermiculite, or something similar: there's nothing in there to feed the plants. That's because it's not needed at this early stage. The seed has everything it needs within it for first few weeks, then you transplant it out.

      Salvia is the Latin name for sage. While Salvia divinorum (diviner’s sage) is what gives its English name the same meaning as a seer, it’s a widespread genus of temperate flowering ornamentals too.

    Out of the list, which ones would have the fastest results? I ask this because I guess these days kids are very impatient, but if I can choose one to show my daughter so she sees the results, then hopefully would be inclined to grow the others.

      You could just grow spring onions from the roots you cut-off when buying a bunch of spring onions from the shop. You will see the results in a week (and eat them too!). Surely that would make her quite curious about planting.

      Good way to teach your kids to slow down a bit and have more patience. Antidote to all that YouTubing/Netflix instant gratification.

      We had lots of success with these last time, the pansies are in pots outside now and other herbs are still going in the garden. I think sounds like people are over watering them if they’re getting mould, wait until it’s mostly dry then put in a tiny bit of water just to dampen it. Or put in a partially sunny area, mould doesn’t grow in sunshine. Or spread some cinnamon powder on top.

      I would suggest trying peanuts, just get some seeds from your nursery. They should germinate the same day

        Growing a peanut tree? Cool, never thought to do that!

        You can grow most veggies you buy in the supermarket. They come with free seeds. Think pumpkin, watermelon, oranges, etc.
        Can be a method to dying and making them successful but it’s free with the fruit, normally you just throw them out.

    Agree. Most just die even with care. Waste of time and based on this is a stupid promo (in my opinion). Just give away free Cactus or perhaps plants that require little water. This way there is a chance one will get something that will survive in transport!

      Yeah ours have been good. I think this is where Woolworths should improve this - add some information about how to grow the plant, because most people likely don’t know and could do with some guidance to improve their chances. When it’s successful people enjoy it.

    Mine grew out, if you're dedicated enough it will happen. Don't forget to plant them according to the seasons that they grow in. Sometimes you get impatient and it won't grow because it wasn't supposed to grow during that time of the year.

    Salvia (all varieties) goes bonkers in my garden. I'm in a sandy beachy area with poor soil, so if you're in a similar location, give salvia a shot. Mildly aromatic, typically grows to a 50-100cm tall shrub, bee attracting flowers in a variety of colours.

    You will experience higher germination rates if you use seed and cutting mix from Bunnings. Worked for me.

      Most seeds will germinate wrapped in wet paper towel for a few days to weeks. The seed itself contains all the nutrients it needs to germinate and take it through its first few weeks of life. Beyond that you need to feed it with good organic soil and nutrients and water.

      Maybe they are the non-alkaloid, opium free variety? I think there was a study/process done back in the late 90s to treat plants with gamma rays to mutate them into a non-narcotic type for seed production. I could be wrong though :)

    The basil and parsley we got last year are growing in our Bunnings planters this year. Didn’t have any luck with the cabbage or one or two others we planted.. but better than the plastic stuff.

    I grow lots of stuff in the garden but of these freebies from Woolies only 5% made it past germination, then died.

    I have no doubt there was something toxic in the material then. Knowing Woolies they won't let that happen again.
