This is educational, I didn't even know what a few of these things were lol

  • +5

None of the ones I got last time actually grew, haha.

They're on eBay already. Of course they are…

    • +10

mine neither! i was so pissed i forgot to take a photo and rant about it on their facebook page. will get my Karen on if it happens again ie. doesn't grow

      • +1

white fluffy mold grew in most of them.. does that count?

        • +9

yes it does, because it's more than what i got. i would've been happy with the mould.

Mouldy?! Old?! I'm Gonna Get Something to Eat!

        • -1

          Mold = mushrooms

        • I had the mold problem too. Next time I'll microwave both the pot and soil pellet to kill any pathogens but I wish the supplier would do this before shipping to Woolies.

          • +8

@scottishdave: Good soil contains living microorganisms that feed plants. I suspect that microwaving the soil pellet will leave you with little 'nutrition' for your seedlings.

            • @jazzninja: i dont have a microwave lol~
thx for suggestion.. im going to just put them straight in garden if anything this time :)

            • +2

@jazzninja: Seed raising mix doesn't need any nutrients, and often they don't. Most commercial seed mixes is a mixture of peat and vermiculite, or something similar: there's nothing in there to feed the plants. That's because it's not needed at this early stage. The seed has everything it needs within it for first few weeks, then you transplant it out.

        • +3

          mould, not mold.

    • Someone in my family got them all growing, but it didn't last long until they were forgotten.

    • +2

The misses just planted the ones from last year, growing well so far.

  • The last time I grew it came with a huge slug!

    • +3

Extra protein what more can you ask for.

      • +3

        And ratlungworm encephalitis - winning!

    • +56

I forgot that your kids were the decider of what's popular and what's not!

  • +12

    "Poppy"
    "Salvia"
    (〃 ̄︶ ̄)人( ̄︶ ̄〃)

  • +35

Better than the plastic junk from previous promotions.

    • +1

last time it came with a glass

      • +1

I'm looking at some right now that I havent used, they literally come in compostable containers..

        • the previous promotion being the glass containers with the plastic 'junk' lid

    • Although not as good as the glass containers or MasterChef knives.
Win some, lose some I guess.

    • +4

I've been trying to redeem my container credits for a couple of weeks now. No stock anywhere!

      • I called my local store and they had a shipment overnight but still showed as no stock available… suggest calling stores nearby even if the "Olive" bot shows no stock

    • Nope at least the plastic stuff had a full on interest ( trading ) on all the platforms :)
Trading of this is virtually zilch .

    Salvia? What?!?!?

    • Salvia officinalis a.k.a. common sage flower.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvia_officinalis

    • +1

Salvia is the Latin name for sage. While Salvia divinorum (diviner’s sage) is what gives its English name the same meaning as a seer, it’s a widespread genus of temperate flowering ornamentals too.

Gardening with salvia, not just on salvia!

  • +2

Out of the list, which ones would have the fastest results? I ask this because I guess these days kids are very impatient, but if I can choose one to show my daughter so she sees the results, then hopefully would be inclined to grow the others.

    • +4

Uhhh, I don't think you get to choose haha

    • Lettuce can germinate in 1-2 days

    • +1

You could just grow spring onions from the roots you cut-off when buying a bunch of spring onions from the shop. You will see the results in a week (and eat them too!). Surely that would make her quite curious about planting.

    • +10

Good way to teach your kids to slow down a bit and have more patience. Antidote to all that YouTubing/Netflix instant gratification.

We had lots of success with these last time, the pansies are in pots outside now and other herbs are still going in the garden. I think sounds like people are over watering them if they’re getting mould, wait until it’s mostly dry then put in a tiny bit of water just to dampen it. Or put in a partially sunny area, mould doesn’t grow in sunshine. Or spread some cinnamon powder on top.

    • +1

I would suggest trying peanuts, just get some seeds from your nursery. They should germinate the same day

      • Growing a peanut tree? Cool, never thought to do that!

You can grow most veggies you buy in the supermarket. They come with free seeds. Think pumpkin, watermelon, oranges, etc.
Can be a method to dying and making them successful but it’s free with the fruit, normally you just throw them out.

        • especially tomatoes.

    • You'd rather ads on TV than plants you can grow?

  • +1

Mine grew mold all over them
    Not uncommon apparently

    • +2

at least something grew.. gotta be happy with that!

  • -1

Agree. Most just die even with care. Waste of time and based on this is a stupid promo (in my opinion). Just give away free Cactus or perhaps plants that require little water. This way there is a chance one will get something that will survive in transport!

  • +8

Am I in the minority that most of mine are still going strong from last time? I literally just put them in the garden and did nothing I don't do with what I already have there…

    • +2

Yeah ours have been good. I think this is where Woolworths should improve this - add some information about how to grow the plant, because most people likely don’t know and could do with some guidance to improve their chances. When it’s successful people enjoy it.

      • +3

It's surprising to me how few people know how to google.

  • +12

Mine grew out, if you're dedicated enough it will happen. Don't forget to plant them according to the seasons that they grow in. Sometimes you get impatient and it won't grow because it wasn't supposed to grow during that time of the year.

  • +4

I still haven't planted my last ones lol

  • -7

Bastards should have to get more plastic containers.

    'While stocks last' is bullshit.

How about we pay for our shopping 'while stock of our money lasts'. Sorry Woolies, I ran out of money….

  • +1

Would have been nice to be able to use my glass container credits I've been saving up. Completely sold out for all stores within 100km from me.

  • +6

    I have a better deal

Spend $30 at your local nursery/Bunnings and recieve $30 worth of any plant

    • But it is not free than.

      • -5

But it isn't free you have to spend $30 just to get it

        • -1

Not sure why you were downvoted for speaking facts

        • +3

But if you spend your normal weekly amount, it is an added bonus (Free).

        • No one is spending $30 just to get one pack of these seeds.

    • +3

Do they have an offer for free groceries with purchase?

    • You're probably only getting $3-$4 worth of plant for your $30 at the big B's :(

  • +1

Salvia (all varieties) goes bonkers in my garden. I'm in a sandy beachy area with poor soil, so if you're in a similar location, give salvia a shot. Mildly aromatic, typically grows to a 50-100cm tall shrub, bee attracting flowers in a variety of colours.

  • +12

You are all so salty. It’s a fun promotion for kids with an educational aspect. It isn’t crappy plastic toys.
Yeah it’s a weird mix of seeds, some out of season and they’re sourced from overseas.

    • +7

It's designed to teach kids about death and failure.

  • You will experience higher germination rates if you use seed and cutting mix from Bunnings. Worked for me.

    • I used the seeds on Osmocote potting mix and they germinated.

    • +3

Most seeds will germinate wrapped in wet paper towel for a few days to weeks. The seed itself contains all the nutrients it needs to germinate and take it through its first few weeks of life. Beyond that you need to feed it with good organic soil and nutrients and water.

    This would be interesting!

'Illegal possession of poppy plant parts or substances derived from poppies is a criminal offence and attracts heavy penalties.

It will still be illegal to take, use, sell or grow poppies without a licence from the NSW Government.

Any ingestion of poppy plants should be treated as an emergency – call 000 immediately for an ambulance.'

    https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/broadacre-crops/winte….

    • +2

Maybe they are the non-alkaloid, opium free variety? I think there was a study/process done back in the late 90s to treat plants with gamma rays to mutate them into a non-narcotic type for seed production. I could be wrong though :)

    • +1

      It’s Woolworths entrapment.

They’ll pay the bail, but you’ll never be allowed to walk into a competitors supermarket again. Genius promotion!

    • There are different varieties of poppies. Woolies would sell the poppy seeds you can eat, Eg for Orange and Poppy seed muffins.

  • +2

Yikes I still have about 30 of these left from the last promo. Better get planting.

  • I'm 41 years old and deadset thought spinach is spinach but there is perpetual spinach. lol

  • +1

The basil and parsley we got last year are growing in our Bunnings planters this year. Didn’t have any luck with the cabbage or one or two others we planted.. but better than the plastic stuff.

  • I grow lots of stuff in the garden but of these freebies from Woolies only 5% made it past germination, then died.

I have no doubt there was something toxic in the material then. Knowing Woolies they won't let that happen again.

  • 100% of mine didn't grow last time.
