  • How does this compare to wd black sn750?

    • +3

      Gen 4 vs gen 3

    • +8

The WD Black SN750 is a PCIe 3.0 drive that is slower than this (up to 3430MB/s read speed and 3000MB/s write speed vs up to 7000MB/s read, 5000MB/s write for the 980 Pro which is PCIe 4.0).

However, most users would never notice the difference and you need a motherboard and CPU (i.e. Ryzen 3000 CPUs onwards on B550 or X570 motherboards or Intel's upcoming 11th gen CPUs) that support PCIe 4.0 to ensure you are getting the higher speeds of the 980 Pro.

  • I already have a 1tb 980 pro, if I buy another will it run at gen3 speeds ? Board is x570 Aorus master

    • +6

X570 Aorus Master will run 3 sticks at Gen4. Read your manual.

      • Yep, wont affect many but adding a third m2 SSD will disable 2 of the 6 sata ports on the Aorus Master. Had this issue last year.

    • Triple Ultra-Fast NVMe PCIe 4.0/3.0 x4 M.2 with Triple Thermal Guards

Also the first M.2 slot has 4 lanes direct to CPU.

      • I have the Aorus Pro. Only the first slot runs direct to the CPU. The second slot (and third slot for similar motherboards) run through the chipset, which is a PCIe 4.0. This may or may not be an issue - it will be a bottleneck if you use both simultaneously for sequential transfers.

    • Dude if you run them in a RAID setup you will be able to get 13gb/s read speeds!!

      It will run 4.0

Has the PS5 SSD expansion list been released?
There was a firmware update recently?

    • Only Sony branded ones for now

      /S

    • Right now, the PS5 doesn't work with any NVMe drive inserted into its expansion slot.

Let us wait for the official announcement, highly likely 980 Pro’s speed is not fast enough for PS5

      • 980 pro not fast enough?
PS5 must have a really fast SSD in it.

        • Up to ~50-80% faster than the 980 Pro, though I don't see why it wouldn't work if Sony allows it.

          https://www.tweaktown.com/news/71338/playstation-5-ssd-speed…

Sony should forgo selling the entire console, and sell their SSD's. :)

          • @xuqi: The PS5 SSD is slower than this based on that article. Uncompressed is only 5.5GB/s. It's likely the PS5 uses a QLC (non-pro) version of this drive.

      • If this doesn't meet Sony's specs for the expansion drive, nothing will.

  • +2

Noting also that this deal from BPC ($289, free shipping) is still running.

  • +2

For those people who would like to buy this one and also an Intel motherboard, let us wait for the latest intel motherboard to support it, it is not a good time to buy a Z490 ( only few support PCIE 4), the new chipset should be available very soon

(AMD users please ignore this comment)

  • 7000 plus read speed is mind blowing. I thought my 970 evo is fastest. 😱

For those who prefers Mwave (for local pickup reasons), they are also offering the same at $10 more.

  • Still too slow for the PS5. Will wait for Sony approved list which should be out within a a couple of months.

    • +1

      PS5 write speed = 5.5GB/sec - WD SN850 = 5.3GB/sec - 980 Pro = 5.0GB/sec. Yes SN850 and 980 Pro are slower but only slightly.

People shouldn't be calling these SSD's too slow for PS5 when the real world difference between them would be near impossible for anyone to notice.

Its a safe bet that 980 Pro and SN850 will be at the top of the Sony approved list.

      • +3

It's not a matter of speed in that sense. It's the matter of the custom Ssd controller in the PS5 which can direct 6 priority levels VS 2 in traditional SSDs. For this reason, any expansion drives need to be significantly faster than the one built into the PS5 so that the custom controller can arbitrate the extra levels of priority in time. Hence, these new drives need to hit over 7.0gb/sec. That's why Sony still hasn't released any compatible drive list.

All this info comes from the road to PS5 talk, given by Mark Cerny. PS5 architect.

        • Great post. Its not about the raw speed but its that custom controller on the PS5 which make the 980 Pro still too slow for the PS5.

  • Price has dropped to $265 to match BPC Tech.

Can also stack with $22 Cashback from Samsung.
