  • This + Panasonic Rice Cooker= Excellent Jasmine Rice

    • I can never understand "Jasmine fragrant rice" is this just ordinary "unfragmented" rice and then they add some Jasmine "fragrance" to it? Just to smell nice? like the smell of cologne that old women wear "jasmine" ?? seriously Don't laugh, I am really confused … ;)

I don't know about Jasmine Rice specifically, but with basmati, the more the rice ages, the more fragrant it is.

        • +1

          LOL as do curries….

        Au naturel! Thanks to 2-Acetyl-1-pyrroline.

The term is derived from 'hom mali' in Thai and it literally means 'smells like jasmine' - which better captures the original meaning but sounds clunky for marketing purposes.

      • No cologne added, it's just this particular breed of rice have a distinct flavour which some describe as "jasmine". There are other breed of rice that has subtle flavour like coconut and taro, pretty interesting.

    Same price @ WW.

    Great Chinese New year present

  • So clearly that whole panicmongering about Australia running out of rice was bullshit…

  • Not grown in Thailand anymore.

      From Cambodia

      • +1

Yeah, I still support the product. It just doesn't smell the same as Thailand jasmine rice.

  • +4

the fragrance is not strong enough, prefer Vietnamese or Thai’s

    • I find Sunrice's Cambodian rice smells and tastes better than many Thai brands. I wonder if cambodia has less pollution than Thailand. Haven't tried the Vietnamese one. Might get a bag this week cos it is half price at Coles.

Thanks, OP. Just worked out tonight I am spending around $15-20 a week on precooked microwaved rice. This along with a rice cooker will hopefully be a lot better

    • +2

wow, precooked is terrible. It'll be a lot cheaper and taste a lot better!!

Technically, you can cook (raw) rice in a microwave oven if you have a right container. I've been doing that for years when in a hurry or only cook for 1. Need a good microwavable plastic container and some practices to get the right rice-water ratio (also depending on the microwave power). Took around 10-15 to get a nice fluffy cooked rice. Not as good as proper rice cooker but much better (and easier) than using a pot and cook on gas/electric cooktop.

I cook my rice on a pot on gas cooktop, takes 10-15mins.

How much better is it on a microwave?

      $13 rice cooker from Kmart.

You'll break even after a week. There after it will cost you $1-2 a week in uncooked rice.

Is this salt and vinegar flavoured?
