From memory the large cans are the only ones we get that are still made in Japan 🇯🇵

I much prefer these to the ones made in China, Thailand or Australia 🍺

    • These cans are from Japan. Bottles of Asahi Super Dry I've seen lately were from Australia.

Enjoying a can now in a chilled glass🍺
Still have a carton left from previous Deal.

The ASAHI Black bottles are brewed in Japan also - try it even if you don't like dark beer - I hate dark beer but LOVE the black. - its not what you expect.

      • +1

        The Black is actually better

      • Yeah I always thought they were brewed not in Japan but you are correct, pleasantly surprised.

Will have to buy a slab. Though I still have a lot of Asahi 500ml cans left. Though you never have enough I guess.

      • Upvote. The black is awesome. A bit harder to find.

    • +4

I had one once brewed in Ireland in a Chinese restaurant in Garden City Brisbane.

    • +2

Yes it's sad isn't it. And their website goes out of its way to imply Japanese made

      • Cartons of bottles state "Japan's favourite beer".
When I asked staff @First Choice where they are brewed - they incorrectly said Japan based on that.

      • +3

This is pretty much brand licensing 101. Hardly anything is authentic anymore, the original brand makes a name for itself, licenses it's name, then someone else makes an approximation of that product and sticks the label on it and sells it to schmucks who don't know any better.
Beer is the classic example. Most 'import' brands are licensed by Australian breweries put people happily pay a premium for the label

    • Agreed.

Had a bottle the other day and it wasn't overly pleasant.

      • China water

        • +2

The bottles are actually Aussie brewed now, I don’t recall the China brewed being this bad.

          Nothing beats the can

  • +1

    That is correct.

I think the bottles are all from China these days (used to be Thailand), and they are swill - avoid at all costs.

The Asahi Black bottles are from Japan and are very good. The Soukai one is made in Australia (Coopers, I think?) - haven't tried it so can't comment on that one.

    • Same as Sapporo bottles not a notch on the Japanese made cans

    • Tried the Soukai ones and they weren't too bad. Much lighter in taste compared to these, which makes them great for gulping down on a hot summer day.

Well, 爽快 (Sōkai) means refreshing & exhilarating in Japanese
        3.5%, brewed in Australia
These are 5% brewed in Japan

        • -1

Alcohol content and taste is two different things.

          • @keejoonc: Yes they are.
Alcohol content is handy to know, along with taste when buying.

They are different beers designed for a different drinking experience. Soukai is being targeted as a premium beer to drink while dining.

That is a low‑carb, lower alcohol beer brewed differently (as the name implies - to be refreshing) & made here, so tastes different to this original made in Japan beer.
Never seen it drunk in Japan

            • -2

@INFIDEL: Sigh Who said alcohol content is not handy to know?

My point is I don't know why you replied to my comment and mentioned the alcohol content? You basically implied that less alcohol = ligher taste, which isn't necessarily true.

Everyone knows it's a low carb beer, less alcohol etc…. All beers taste different even if they are the same brand/type of beer if brewed in different country/region. Nothing new there once again.

              • @keejoonc: I implied nothing - you imagined it!

You are just repeating what I said, which obviously not every one knows!!
Otherwise there would not be the discussion in beer Deals!

                Hidden your useless comments.

                • -2

@INFIDEL: Do you even know what implied means?

No, you are the one repeating what's already mentioned on the product details page on Dan Murphy as if it's some revelation that no one knows about.

Your comment is just as useless given it's just a regurgitation of what's on Dan Murphy page.

Asahi Soukai is not a Japanese Beer - it's a very Australian beer!
It has joined those other Asahi beers like VB.

It was developed here & made specially for the Australian market (mid strength, lower carbs), with a taste suited to Aussies, not for sale in Japan. A triumph of Aussie market research!!
No wonder I've never seen it in Japan.

          From Asahi Group's History:
2015 Oct. Launch of Australia-only premium beer "Asahi Sokai"

Given a Japanese name here by marketing… "Soukai’ means ‘refreshing’ in Japanese"

          Just not very Japanese!
It's an Aussie beer with a Japanese name.
Unlike other Japanese beers sold in Japan but brewed under licence here.
It's an OK drop, as it's based on Super Dry.

I've been drinking Asahi Super Dry in Japan, then Australia since 2005. It reminds me of soaking in Sento & Onsen, then cooling off with a great 500ml glass of Super Dry.

So I have a long interest in Asahi beers & check out different brews in Japan.

I'll stick with the taste (of Japan) I love over an Aussie marketer's creation🍺

My Fav. Unless I'm mistaken, I though ~$65 is the regular DM price.

Edit: Cashback brings it down to $47. oh well, 1st choice is over 5km away from my place.

    • Don't forget the $10 worth of Flybuys points…

  • Need something for the 5 days ahead…

    • I'd probably be reaching for something stronger than beer…

  • $71 at Liqourland

Decent alternative is this one, bought and tried and I like it, comparable to Budvar IMO - don't know what the review comment is all about though??

  • No longer available in VIC..

  • Just a question for the beer experts. What's your take on taking a slab of chilled beer from the bottle store home, keeping it outside for days/weeks ie bringing the beer back to room temperature, then chilling it and finally drinking it.

In simple question, what's your take on chilling a beer, bringing it back to room temperature for a period of time then chilling it again before drinking it? Does it spoil the taste?

I'm only asking as a friend told me that's a big nono

    • From my limited experience light is more the enemy for beer than temperature changes - I generally try to go with cans over bottles for that reason, also easier to crush down for the recycling bin

    • I think this is a bad idea for bottles at least, the cap and glass expand and contract at different speeds potentially leading to temporary tiny breaks in the seal (my theory) Anecdotally I think I’ve noticed bottles of beer in the past that have temp cycled a couple of times, not off but flavour is slightly off

No thoughts on cans. Complete AL so …

    • I've done it plenty, especially when I get on these high demand deals, a lot of the time they'll give me a cold case or 4 cold 6 packs. Haven't noticed a difference, I would still avoid large/rapid fluctuations in temperature for peace of mind.

    • Yeah thanks for the replies, I've noticed that all the purchases I've made online on Liquorland and first choice have delivered beers that have been in the cold storage. I was able to tell by the feel of the carton. Friend was like I should stop buying beer online (that would be delivered) haha

I'm with some of you, I haven't really been able to taste the difference. But I don't really drink much beer Lol.

It wouldn't arrive at the store chilled, so it's already been through 1 cycle.
