Yamaha MusicCast 20 WX-021 Network Speaker $295 Delivered @ Selby

80

I'm trying to move away from my Google home devices, and this seemed to fit the bill for what I wanted: able to play music from my NAS and phone, and the ability to synchronise multiple Musicast devices.

  • I'm looking at getting two of these or one 50 musiccast instead. I swear I've seen these go for around $175 in the past. Haven't seen that price in awhile though.

    • +1

Was at Aspley HN the other day and they had a few ex demo units of the 20 and 50, $149 and $299 from memory. Wasn’t enough to post a deal.

  • This seems to be the standard price? 3camels shows it's been this price since the start of last year and even dropped to $160 in March.

  • Good idea, but you can't rule out smaller companies (or should I say non-"big-tech" companies) harvesting data and selling it on. Basically all profit from their perspective.

Logitech Media Server is the most open and flexible solution out there. All the software is completely free and under active development. It does synchronised playback and has many plugins to support Spotify, Tidal, etc and it can obviously play anything from your own collection.

You can basically turn anything running some form of Linux, Android, MacOS, iOS or Windows into a player and/or controller.

I have bookshelf speakers connected Class D amps all over the place. My main setup, the kitchen and on the back verandah all run off raspberry Pi's. My windows desktop and my partners macbook run squeezelite in the background. And I use wireguard to stream my whole collection to my phone when I'm out of the house. Its all one seamless, intergrated system and you can set it up in a matter of hours if you're handy with a computer.

And even more fun, think of the upgrade paths you open up by keeping all the components separate ;-)

  • Sorry to thread crap but I've also been thinking about moving away from the Google Home systems I've got at home.

The only reason I really like keeping it around is that I can play Spotify music on various combinations of speakers - and can also be controlled from a nest hub.

I can't even think of what to search for to find similar discussions. These searches just don't help: cord cut google home, google home alternatives, move away from Google Home, etc.

    • see my post above, but you could start here: http://picoreplayer.org/

      also the slimdevices forum.

if you have a NAS or something already you can get Logitech Media Server up and running in 10 minutes on Docker. Don't miss the "material skin" plugin, it brings the interface right up to date.

other home assistant and media type things can also be run as docker containers pretty easily if you're looking for more than just music playback. The sky is the limit to be honest. I built an open media vault box about 6 months ago and all the software is so far ahead of what I was expecting. Well worth it.

  • Hi all,
Anyone know how these compare to Sonos One’s?

  • Do you mind sharing why you're moving away from Google home? Just curious as I'm using Google with multiroom audio and just loving the simplicity to play music anywhere via assistant.

    • You have no privacy whatsoever with any kind of unmodified Google device.

      • This is given if you're using Google assistant in any android device. I believe this has Alexa, so assuming it will be the same?
