  • seems expensive……compare to other online store

Too expensive as already mentioned. Cheaper prices and free shipping, makes this a useless venture for that media/attention wh0r3 GH.

The old fool seems unable to comprehend that the 10% GST is not the issue. It's the 40%+ or RRP price gouging.

THE retail king Gerry Harvey may have a personal fortune of about $1.6 billion but the Harvey Norman founder thinks donating to charity is "just wasted".

Asked in a new book about the role he and Harvey Norman play in the community, Mr Harvey said giving money to people who "are not putting anything back into the community" is like "helping a whole heap of no-hopers to survive for no good reason".

He said he believed in helping "develop people to their potential" because "when they achieve [their potential] they will put a lot more back into the community".

"You could go out and give a million dollars to a charity tomorrow to help the homeless. You could argue that it is just wasted. They are not putting anything back into the community.

"It might be a callous way of putting it but what are they doing? You are helping a whole heap of no-hopers to survive for no good reason. They are just a drag on the whole community.

"So did that million you gave them help? It helped to keep them alive but did it help our society? No. Society might have been better off without them but we are supposed to look after the disadvantaged and so we do it. But it doesn't help the society."

Nobody's criticising him for running a business. People are criticising him for saying that his prices are double what you pay for things online because of a 10% GST.

As for his charitable works, I've never encountered them, and personally if I'm going to give to a charity I don't shout it from the rooftops. Charity for some people = publicity with a tax deduction.

xuqi is simply stating the pricing facts. Someone can run a profitable business without excessive profit margins (compared to other local chains) or using hard sell tactics to extract money from those less knowledgeable. You are quite right that people people are free not to shop there - just like people are free to criticise or to chose to or not donate to certain causes.

Just because someone donates to charity doesn't mean their actions their other actions can't be criticized. Ozgameshop sell games profitably and maybe they do good things with their money too and even if they didn't it doesn't make them bad!

Seems your being the more judgmental one here. Assuming other readers/posters are (mis)using using his charity money when who knows, maybe they donate more as a percentage (It's relatively easy to donate when you are wealthy, there's much less personal financial impact). He certainly gets a lot of free advertising from the media that other local retailers don't get - that's advertising money saved/in the pocket for his business or money he can donate without impact.

    • Sorry Red, the -ve was not directed at you, but at the deal in general.

      • Same here.

  • Screw Harvey Norman. Bought a 32" Sony from them left a $60 deposit. Called them on the 23rd asking if it had arrived yet, and they said they wont be coming until next year. Pricks. If i didnt already hate Harvey Norman for his whinging about GST and import tax, i definately hate him even more now. I hope his whole business goes down.

    • What lead time did.they quote when you purchased. Cancel, refund and buy again in the current sales elsewhere.

"World Best Prices" obviously doesn't mean cheapest price for the consumer.
