Getting The Most out of Your Amazon Prime

Hi Ozb

I was wondering what groceries you buy from Amazon?
I have bought alcohol but I am wondering what the community orders. I know there are regular post for cosmetics and toiletries but is there anything else I am missing?

Happy to hear of any suggestions.

It's $7, watch a couple of movies on Prime and you've already got your moneys' worth!

    • Marathon sitcoms. It's so nice not having ads, like commercial TV or the network streaming apps. I always struggle to find good movies on Prime, Netflix too (not that I've had Netflix for a long time now), but TV shows on Prime seem like a good mix of the kind of things I used to watch on TV.

      • It's definitely the best value service out there. Free postage a bonus? Also Prime Music I guess!

    • Free Kindle reads!

    • It costs money? They seem to offer me a free trial every time I want to buy something on Amazon.

      • You only get it once!

        • They used to say it was once only, but are now re-offering to people that had it before. Don't know if it is now twice only, or once in X years, but its definitely not one off. Same amazon account I've had since it was only a book shop.

I order specials when they are cheap, the kind of things that will save me a trip to the store. As long as you have room in your recycling bin for the cardboard boxes it's a good system.

        • for me it's an always useful to have item as you never know when you'll need it - I look at random and "unanticipated that this would appeal" specials as well. No postage can easily make something a deal instead of a no deal.

The Prime TV is handy but not something I'd buy a Prime sub for and the music is of no use (for me).

      • I pay for Apple Music, the Google and Amazon solution to music doesn't really do it for me, and not just because they are missing a lot of songs.

  • I buy anything on special. Do yourself a favour and setup price alerts with camel or keepa or i use this app on android:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.conedevstu…

Generally, I buy shampoo, shower gels, breakfast bars, soft drink, snacks, etc. Basically what coles/woolies have on sale they price match and I can order without having to remember, go or lug home.

    • Cheers mate. I'll look into the app too

Please consider the lack of sustainability of regular small value purchases to try to cover a sunk cost.

Getting $1 items packed and delivered to your house every day is killing the planet.

It's really not killing the planet.

It is killing small businesses though.

@studentl0an: The fuel and other resources they use to deliver this to you does hurt more than if you go to a bigger store. You might not notice from your window but it's there.

@Mechz: Actually moving items from the warehouse to a store, then for me to use my own car to pick it up from a store uses MORE fuel than if it's delivered straight to my door from the warehouse on pre planned delivery routes.

Surely you can understand that moving many packages for many people in a single delivery truck uses significantly less fuel and resources than me driving to a store to pick it up? They are driving on those routes regardless if there's a package for me or not.

In addition all my packages from Amazon come in cardboard boxes with cardboard tape and are all recyclable.

So yeah it's better for the environment, and especially so for people like myself who live in apartment complexes. It uses less fuel and is better for the environment than if we all went to the store in our own cars - which is what you are advocating.

How strange that I was downvoted so much but people don't just use their brains, it's better for the environment - not worse.

    • I agree. My recycling bin has never been as full as since joining Amazon. I don;t buy regular groceries but probably average 1 delivery a fortnight. It amazes me how much bigger the box is than it needs to be for most items - surely Amazon can hold an inventory of different size boxes to minimise packaging waste?

      • I am sure they have done the sums on the different all in costs (cost of box, how it fits into a truck, how damaged a good gets/likelihood of return etc) of different sized boxes. 'Waste' is unfortunately not accounted for aside from the size it takes up in the truck and the additional cost of the cardboard.

        • I'll be conscious of it

  • Toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, coffee pods, Uncle Ben's rice.

    • Solid list thanks

  • Getting specials that are on sale at Coles or Woolies at the same time e.g. condensed milk which the normal one ALWAYS sells out of (guess no one wants Skim condensed milk!)

Have also gotten chilli olive oil, dishwashing liquid, hand soap, shower gel and tissues delivered via Prime. Best one though would be my 1.5kg can of Milo that I got for $10 during Prime Day last year

    • Good deal :)

There is a yearly sub that cost $59 which is $25 cheaper than monthly $7.

Personally didn't see the value in it. As above, environmental costs of packing and shipping for negligible savings isn't worth it. Could be worth it only if there saving on a big ticket item that can pay for yearly sub eg TV

  • Bulky or heavy items, kitchen towel, soft drinks, water, toilet paper.
    Reynolds foil.

  • Shame the Amazon music is not included with prime in Australia

Maybe other countries get premium included at no extra cost?

        • Nah there are several tiers. 'Music prime' and 'music unlimited', which costs an additional $12/month.
You still have to pay for unlimited in at least the USA.
