$99 2TB Western Digital Elements @ CentreCom

660

http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/wdbaau0020hbk-aesn-weste… Saw this last night and went down to officeworks and they price matched it for me on the Gold Coast, down from $129 in store. Pretty good price especially after the floods in Thailand.

mod: removed price match from title.

      But OW's pricematch +additional 5% is :)

    • +10

Maybe not, but $99 is already a good deal. The price match is just icing.

    • -4

Price is bargain but price match should not be in title.

  • +9

Find it cheaper elsewhere and let me know :)

  • +5

the $99 is the deal….. the price match is a bonus….

  • +3

Dammit, bought this for $129 a few weeks ago! Nice price

  • +3

There is an option to Pricematch. $99 on its own is a bargain, $94.05 is even better (if you can get it).

  • +2

Good price and good drives , ive been using 2 of these for my media server for the last 8 months with no complaints " bought them for $98 each from last years Ow ozbargain deal "

Hardly. This is pointing out one good (great) item from that sale, that one doesn't even mention it in the OP.

      • +6

Well, I've done exactly the same thing before and a mod deleted my post (sale was mentioned but specific item was not). Not that I'm out on a vendetta, but I thought that's what is classified as a duplicate to prevent people from listing each individual item of a sale.

        • What was it?

  • how come you got it for $94.05? shipping cost to brisbane metro is $18 (my location)?

    • I told them they had a store in Melbourne so I guess they're sorta price matching with the store not the online store… even if you add $18 on though to the $99 and take 5% off its cheaper than their usual $129

  • +2

you're in bris yet you pricematched a place that only has stores in melb.

remind me to you shopping you with some day

    • was about to say the same.

i take it there's a fair chance the orificeworks i go to won't honour the pricematch.
and delivery from melb is $18.

      • +2

Give it a go. Just say you're on holiday from Melbourne or have a mate in Melbourne who's coming up who could bring it, but you'd rather buy from Officeworks. Give them some BS :)

  • Just about to get in the car and go to OW…

This will last me 9 months…do you guys reckon HD prices will be back to normal by then?

    • Should be, fingers crossed

    • Are they open?

      • All stores in Melbourne are open until 6pm on Sundays AFAIK.

        • +1

i think it was in reference to it being the first day of the year?

        • Doesn't make a difference at many places in Melbourne. I know of only one store with altered trading hours for today, and they opened 30 minutes later than normal.

  • Could someone put a copy of their receipt?
    Thanks

I am so glad I got the Seagate 2TB a few months ago @ $64.50

    • what? that price can't be beaten! give us a link

  • +1

I'm not being picky and I am not dissin' the deal, but the heading says "OW will price match"

Well chances are they won't because for the majority, there is delivery involved.

Should just change the title to say OW MAY price match..

    • From OW site;
      "What about online stores?

Identical products are price matched against online stores but as with any other kind of store, the item must be currently in stock. When price matching online stores we also take into account the added cost of delivery. If the identical product can be purchased and delivered via an online store for a total price lower than the one we are offering, we will beat that total price by 5%."

      • I saw that too. But they didn't take shipping into account for me… Depends who you get I guess :)

  • Looking to updrade my nas drive too 2tb drives..Can the drive be removed and put into a desktop or nas?

    • I want to know this as well - can the drive easily be removed and used as an internal? What hard drive is typically inside? A 7200rpm, 5400rpm? Thanks :)

      • I cant see why not, havent tried though. I'd imagine its 7200rpm

        • +2

Given that WD advertises it as using "Green power technology" I would think it's a 5,400 rpm drive.

Before you shoot me down in flames I did a bit of Googling and one site claims it's a 7,200rpm. I guess it's certainly possible but "green" and 7,200 hardly go hand-in-hand.

Hah! Just saw the price for this on a popular site… $255.70!

      • +2

I bought one from centrecom and it had a Caviar Black in it. Very Happy :)

      • +6

The drive inside is a WD20EARX its a 5400RPM green drive. For those that may have bought standard internal WD green 2tb drives before the price boom, this is likely the model you would have bought. I have bought 2 of these and opened the case to remove the drive to use as internal drives.
My local cheap PC store has these internal drives listed for $240. Much cheaper to buy this external.
It is incredibly easy to pull apart, this youtube vid can show you how
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZUMh_H3B_Y

The bonus is, I had some old 300gb drives lying around, so I put them back into this elements case, and they worked perfectly as externals, I filled them with media and gave them to my mum.

Until HDD prices come back down, this is how I will be buying internal drives.

hope this helps any of those wondering.

Yeah I got one at $119 a few weeks back. You just need a small flat head screwdriver or even a butter knife may do. Just flip it over and find join at the edge and slip the screwdriver or knife a little way in and pop the back off. I went from the front end. Don't stick the screwdriver or knife too far in. You don't want to be leveraging against that drive itself! You'll also need a philips head to remove the connection inside to the drive…just two screws.

  • I posted that I did the same earlier in this thread: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/60817

Officeworks are meant to check if the store has it in stock, but yes, the OP is lucky in that OW should have added postage costs as Centrecom aren't available on the GC

  • Pricematched this a couple days ago with no issues :)

  • Price matched no questions asked…will post receipt later tonight

2 left at OW Nunawading (Melb)

    • Price matched (and 5% discount) at OW Greensborough. Still stacks left.

      • plenty left at OW frankston too.

Every time I see a WD drive on here it reminds me of this post

  • I have no issues with the drives, but I have enquired with WD about these particular models which have no specs
The reason being, is that they cant tell you whether its an IDE or SATA drive … spoke to a customer service guy who even said they have no information regarding the type of drives even with their serial … which is really BS but I still prefer WD any day …. on that note, I did buy 3 of them hehehehee

    • +8

You think it could be IDE? Are you high?

  • the only way to find out what kind of drive you have is to physically open it, which then voids your warranty …. dodgey aye?? hehehhehee

    • +1

You can use a reporting utility such as WD tools and get all the drive info quite easily.

      http://bychaw.blogspot.com/2011/04/what-is-inside-wd-element…

You can always check this site first.. It's been pretty accurate from what I have heard!

I got the 2TB green… But supposedly someone received a 'black' on another Elements drive

      • I've bought 6 or so Elements drives and cracked them all open at some point. All have been green drives. I'd be stoked to get a black one though.

  • Didn't think about price match at OW when I bought mine. Not sure about others, but mine one says it's made in Malaysia on the box, maybe that's why it's selling at 99.

  • Anyone knows whether it is USB 2 or 3?

    • USB 2

    • AFAIK, the Elements range is never in USB 3.0. I have a 1.5TB, and it is 2.0
      Edit: beaten by 33 seconds.

  • No offence to the OP, but Centrecom website payments is a royal pain when you pay by credit card.
Firstly there is a 2% surcharge and secondly they insist have to supply them with a back copy of your signed credit card card and statements showing address…What A Loser!
If ow won''t price match then maybe I am better off going to my Harvey Norman store and try to negotiate a better price as their normal price is only $129 anyway, so preety sure I can at least get $10 off considering it cost $99 + $18 for postage + 2% surcharge for credit card/paypal with centrecom which kill all the savings, so unless you in Melbourne or got OW price match it may not be worthwhile for the rest of us.

  • thanks OP for the great deal. just picked a couple up from OW for $94.09ea - staff were great. Saweeet! Drive model is WD20EARS for those interested.

    • Is it possible to remove the HDD from the enclosure? I'm asking because i'm thinking of getting an esata compatible enclosure to get better transfer rates. thanks in advance!

  • +1

Got mine today from OfficeWorks-Clayton(Melbourne) for only $93.10 after they not only matched but beat the price by 5%!!
    Awesome deal!!

  • Price match looks good, Lucky victorians, anyone managed to get price match in NSW and would be kind enough to post receipt?
Would be a really good deal for under $95 as postage and credit cards is too much otherwise.

  • asked my mate at HN Erina NSW Central Coast to pricematch this and they can do it no problem, they just have to include the shipping

    • Thanks, good to know save the hassles of buying online with silly Centrecom checkout process.

  • Like cool_ice6, Officeworks Clayton pricematched based on print out of Centrecom page.
    HDD was a WD20EARS

  • Checking Centrecom this morning - they have raised the price to $149. :(

Anyone kept a screen shot that we can print out?

    • same, would really like one but sadly missed out :(

      • me too, long time havent checked ozbargain

  • Can somebody post the receipt and centrecom screenshot? We might still be able to try at OW. Please!

  • Damn, just realised this afternoon that we need another 1-2TB drive after doing a lot of backups and consolidation. Don't know whether to wait or spend more money and get USB 3.0 etc (got one 3.0 port on laptop, backups using 2.0 are a killer! Going to take me days to backup at this rate!)
