Fair Price for a 50km 50 Minute Drive for a 520L Fridge

Using airtasker right now unless anybody knows of a cheaper or better service to move a 520L Fridge from Jamisontown NSW to Katoomba NSW

Distance is roughly 50km

Driving time is 50 minutes

Then you gotta factor in getting the fridge on and off the vehicle and into the house then kitchen

Less than 6 steps total then all flat level into the kitchen

No idea on weight but it's a Kelvinator N520f-r

Wondering what's a good price for all parties

Edit: Ended up going with an airtasker delivery guy.. initial offer was $150 haggled it down to $135 + airtasker fees which ended up being around the $155 range funny because the fridge was haggled down to $160 so the delivery is almost the price of the used 520L fridge.

Not sure how used the fridge is I should have asked but I think it was 5-6 years already been in use.

Thanks all as per usual muh ozbargain brains trust!

Edit2: guy was awesome and thanks to this job he was able to line up more jobs with the seller so was a win win for everyone.. I ended up tipping him $50 there was 2 guys so hopefully he splits it with his offsider.. nice guy they were very professional and careful so I am happy to help someone else out.. because I know I will get paid forward for sure in the future someway some how.. it always comes back around

Isn't that the beauty of Airtasker?

I'd just put $50 and see what people offer.

    • +1

Suspect OP is concerned about over-paying to begin with. If so, then start at $50 as above and see what the responses are like.

      • Was in a rush so put the offer first at $130 then 5 mins later I changed it to $100.

Got offered $150 before airtasker fees got the price down to $135 before airtasker fees roughly $155 after airtasker fees I can't remember now.

        Eh.

You know what they say - you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!
The fridge wouldn't be looking so nice anymore if some careless person caused a huge dent or scrape at the front, would it? 😜

    $200

    • Got it down to $135 before airtasker fees :)

Do I get to keep my ozbargain badge?

  • How much do you get paid per hour and use this as an estimate.

    • +2

      $14.78

      • damn u are living the dream
I can only afford to pay $14.77

      • +1

Does that include super, annual leave and after hours/weekend rates?

        • D. All of the above

  • Need a poll.

Then you gotta factor in getting the fridge on and off the vehicle and into the house then kitchen

Do you need one or two pers to load/unload the fridge for you?

    Do you need damage insurance?

    • Could probably be done with one person with the right setup and tools.

      Don't need damage insurance.

We don't care about cosmetic damage too much you should see the rest of the house and its inhabitants lol.

  • +14

Lol for $50 they might pick up your fridge, but you may not see it on the other end lol

    • +1

Have you seen some of the accepted offers on airtasker? Someone will probably do it for a 6 pack.

    • maybe someone has a load already going that way. so $50 might be for 20 mins extra work to load and unload.

    • +3

ROFL, the reality is that the person picking up the fridge would probably be more concerned that AlienC will refuse delivery of such an ancient item.

      https://www.grays.com/lot/0115-5009888/office-furniture-and-…

Note this one sold for $29 7 years ago.

      • lol…. you'd want free delivery then!

      • lol damn I think I got ripped off buying it for $160 but the inmates are getting antsy

  • Can you hire a car and DIY?

I've had to move fridges of roughly this size and they fit in my forester.

    • Honestly it would probably cost more.

This way I can still go to work and come home and be ready to help unload it.

And was afraid it would be gone by the weekend although no biggie as there are lots of fridges going through that gumtree listing afaik.

Depending on where the person lives, it might be a couple of hours time, plus fuel etc … I'd say $50 is not enough to cover it .. more like $100 minimum.

    • And plenty of tradies Ute's make this trip everyday who might be happy to do it for a case of beer.

      Who knows.

      • +1

Only if the fridge lifts itself on and off the ute.

        • We have the means we have the technology.

If you buy something cheap but long (a piece of wood, plastic conduit, whatever), you can get a free trailer hire for 2 hours at Bunnings. You'll be very tight for time with your 50 minutes each way, though.

    • T&C may have changed but it never used to be something that required a trailer, just a purchase. Mate had to pick up a dining table set bought from Gumtree or something so bought a moving blanket that IIRC was around $10. Bloke at the hire counter realised what we were doing and wasn't too happy about it but basically said "well there's nothing that says it's not allowed" and off we went.

  • $50 would be a good price for OP. I got that price to move a washing machine for a 20mins drive. Felt bad so I gave the guy a tip.

$100 - 200 would be fair for all as 520L is a decently sized fridge.

$200+ would be the normal price for removalists.

    • Hmm feel kind of bad now that I got it for $135.

Yeah I don't know how I feel about paying more for the delivery of the item than the item itself.. probably still way cheaper than getting it from a proper store but still.

  • +1

Distance is roughly 50km each way so 100km total and 2 hours minimum including loading/unloading?

    • 100km

Plus fuel probably 8L if not more.

  • sell it. buy a new one

    • this is the new one

im the buyer in this scenario trying to move the item not the seller unfortunately.. otherwise it would be pickup only and the buyer would have to organise delivery not me

  • Two hours work for two people, plus vehicle costs for 100km?

Based on the ATO rate per km of 72c, that $72 plus profit margin … maybe $100.

Total of four hours work … could easily be $120 to $200 there, so somewhere between $200 and $300 all up.

If you can meet up with someone at the pick up point and go with them to your destination, you might be able to cut $100 off.

It sounds like you're going to need to find someone who's happy to do it as a odd job because they're going that way anyway. Otherwise, you're probably better off (or at least no worse off) getting it done via a moving company anyway.

    • Found a cool bloke with a small company by the looks of it that does this kind of thing.

Final price was $135 before airtasker fees though I feel like I should tip him $20 just for going really out of his way to do this job.

      We shall see tomorrow.

      • Assuming old mate is reliable, etc., I'd take that. You might get lucky and find a better deal, but you also might be waiting a long time for the deal (and your fridge) to come along!

        • Well we shall see if he arrives tonight.

Otherwise another scam getting the jump on me again.

It's due to rain soon so weather conditions are not looking good.

          • @AlienC: How'd you go? Get a fridge? Stay dry? No stings?

            • +1

@Seraphin7: Not too bad ended up being generous in the end instead of stingy so I may have lost some ozbargain points in this transaction.

Got a 520L Big Kelvinator Fridge for $160 down from $201 from a gumtree ad that was basically listing hundreds of items.

              Then scheduled delivery via Airtasker.

Distance from the Seller to my house was 50km or 50 min drive which was about 100km or 100 min drive for the delivery guys.

Ended up paying $135 for delivery haggled down from $150 (plus airtasker fees).

Read some of the comments and ended up tipping the delivery guy $50.

That was the generous part but I feel like they put in about 2-3 hours work so felt kind of scummy to only pay $135 for 2 guys and a ute pick up truck.

Petrol alone would have cost about $20 so $115 after petrol for 2 guys and a ute for 2-3 hours work.

              No stings this time thankfully.

              Stayed dry.

We now have 2 fridges so I am trying to get rid of the second fridge which is a 400L fridge freezer but not fully working no rush aiming to try get $50 or free pick up for it.

Wish I knew how to repair it but I have no clue about fridge stuff.

  • $520 - $1 per litre.

    • You should start a moving business I think you got the business model down Baysew ;)

  • You could nickel and dime it for maybe $50? But if we're valueing people in Australia properly, I'd offer $100. $35 per hour (documented) rate not cash in hand. Plus fuel

    • Username checks out.

      • Actually I pay more for that. Only thrifty when it comes to products made in China or India.

  • Seems pricey.

I'm paying $100 for the delivery a new 3 seater couch with chaise from their factory somewhere in Sydney to my place in Sydney..

    • I ended up being generous and tipped the guy $50 yeah I buckled I was gonna do $20 but then had a quick change of heart because they did a good service and was a nice guy I am sucker for charity but at least I feel like my karma is above water rather than under and honestly that gets me through to the next day so it is alright.

  • Hahahaha… you could have hired a van for far less

    • -1

I am gonna get a lot of sh*t for this but I can't drive haha.. redirecting all that brain power and motor skills elsewhere.. also expenses..

I catch the train and bus and sometimes a taxi if I am feeling fancy and need to spoil myself.. yes my level of indulgence is taking a taxi to work when I am too tired or late to catch the bus haha lol.

Seen too many idiots on the road and here a lot of stories of people paying a lot for something stupid and silly I just decided to avoid it.

So far I have managed to live without it I just walk everywhere good for my health I suppose especially because my work is physical (cleaning) so it keeps me fit and ready for work at all times although I would be lying if I said I don't look at my coworkers cars and watch people be able to move around freely.

  • Conclusion:

Fridge came packed all professionally and wrapped safely

2 guys managed to squeeze it in even though I forgot to measure the doorways

Ended up tipping $50 on top of the $135 initial price (before airtasker fees roughly $155 after airtasker fees) it felt good to support someone almost 10 years younger trying to get up in the world

He ended up securing more jobs from the seller which is awesome news for everyone

I forgot to say thank you properly I kind of just gave a nod and maybe a yep ah well can't win em all but I am sure he knows anyways I appreciate it
