Any Comprehensive Insurers That Include L and P Plate Drivers

Hi,

I have an 18yo still on L plates (soon to be P) and a nearly 16yo who will get L plates soon.

Are there any comprehensive insurers who will cover L&P plate drivers as lites drivers without jacking the premium.

Thanks

RACQ does. I thought they all did and just applied an extra excess.

    • Budget does, but they charge additional to list them, and additional as an age premium, and if they are not listed they charge again for an unlisted driver.

My understanding is that L drivers are covered under the instructor's policy (no increase in premium). I can confirm this is true for AAMI and RACV.

However, once a license is obtained (P plate) then you have to add the driver to the policy. There may or may not be an increase in premium but there will almost certainly be a much higher excess if the P plate driver is at fault and you have to make claim.

I am with AAMI. This is correct. You don’t need to do anything for the L plate driver. They will be covered if you have a policy with AAMI. Once they get a P plate, it is your choice if you want to cover them. But doing a defensive driving course will get you a discount on the p plate driver cover.

NRMA will cover anyone who has your permission to drive your car.

Yea with multiple excess charges though

  • I have comprehensive insurance with Suncorp.
Any non regular driver does not need to be listed and does factor in calculation of premiums.
If a claim is made, for learners you pay extra excess for inexperience.
Anyone else may pay extra excess depending on driving record.

  • Thanks,

Im looking for the 'perfect' blend to cover my kids when driving!

    Im in Sydney.

  • The ones I have had all have an option for it, but you need to read the PDS as they either need to on the policy or you need to tick a box that 'P' plate driver will be driving the car and/or 'under 25/30' will be driving the car.

It will cost allot more and if they have an accident the excess will be huge…..

    Read the PDS!!!!

      Read the PDS!!!!

yea easy to understand and full of double dutch…

  • Unlikely to find someone who will add them without increasing the premium at least a bit. After all, they will be covering extra risk from inexperienced drivers.

Ring/internet and get prices. There is very little loyalty to existing customers, so changing might get you a better rate anyway.

  • If you have any confidence in your kids driving, I would highly recommend not listing them on your policy and just paying out on the $2000 excess when it comes

    • They haven't even been driving for a year lol

  • i think learners are always covered but it is good to check your policy to be sure

also good to buy some professional lessons in a dual control car at first
