    Bye bye NBN

      Hello patchy coverage

      • +5

In north-west suburbs such as moonee ponds, ascot vale, and Melbourne CBD, i find optus to be superior for speed and coverage, hell i even have better experience with vodafone than i do with telstra in these areas! i have noticed in rural areas optus 4g coverage is pretty trash compared to telstra…

i think there are either too many people on telstras network thats congesting speeds or they are artificially limiting user speeds or they dont have enough towers to keep up with the demand in these areas.

i personally feel like telstra is losing their spot as #1 in speed however they will always win in coverage cause of rural.

speed test i did in essendon https://www.speedtest.net/result/a/6277580846

        • the oak park tower has been down twice and no coverage for two weeks each time, but when it works this plan can stream 4k on youtube no issue, though at times have to drop back to 1440p

          • @everunman: yeah man i used to live in oak park 8 years ago and i had no luck with any provider, telstra was definitely the best in oak park.
Things might have changed now tho

I'm also Northside (Brunswick, Pascoe, Coburg) and I run Telstra and Optus side by side. Theres no real congestion on 5G on Telstra, you can easily get regular 800-900mbps speeds. Optus once in a blue moon above 400mbps.

          • @11112007: Yeah but we are talking about 4G

            • +1

@harryozz: 4G is abysmal around here on Optus.

Getting 15mbps right now compared to 120mbps on Telstra.

        • +1

3051 here. I had Telstra on phone, now have voda on phone and optus on sim modem - both are faster than telstra

      • +1

Even with good coverage, you might not get decent speed due to congestion. Highly recommend anyone thinking about ditching NBN for this to test out speed first with a prepaid sim or…invite one of your Optus friends to come over for some tea.

      • +5

Wouldn't download speed vary depending on your location though?

        • yeah definitely but in these areas never really drop below 100mbps and usually get 200mbps minimum with the exception of the CBD sometimes itll drop to 10mbps in crowded places…
like seriously if you're ever in moonee ponds or essendon give a speedtest a go you will be amazed.
          https://prnt.sc/10l7ynv

      • I have Optus 4g home internet and it sh!ts all over NBN speeds. I understand it wouldn't be like that for everyone but it's a viable option.

        • Same , my old 4G optus was better than NBN

          • @easternculture: same here well I am with telstra 5g now which has a better ping

            • @yahoo: I’m with telstra 5G and currently got a complaint with the TIO to get out of it 😒

        • Yeah I got my parents Telstra 4g for their house cause obviously they aren’t gaming or anything. And their little unit gets 250mbps.

My iPhone 5G gets around 600-700 at my house.

          Nbn ? I’m on a 50 plan and average 50-55.

Also the couple of times I’ve connected to Telstra I’ve had an issue that both times required the ombudsman. The last time, they literally sent me bills for a service that was cancelled for about a year. Some months I was calling 4-5 times just to ensure it was cancelled this time then again I would get some ridiculous bill. Sounds like rubbish or I didn’t know what I was doing but I’m an mature adult that works in an office I’m more than capable English is not my second language (profanity) nightmare.

      • At one place. 700 metres away from my home I get 326 Mbps at 2 metres away from that spot speed drops to 220 Mbps, like 70 metres away from that spot with 326 Mbps, speed is 20Mbps and offcoruse in my home no 5g at all

      • -2

Good luck with Telstra and worst philipino customer service. Waiting forever.

      • +1

Optus is far superior to Telstra in my area and get killer speeds on 4g.

Also please get it right it’s Philo call centres.

      • Optus ✅
Telstra ❌ is the worst for me in my area. My sister has vodafone and she has fantastic speeds. So it depends on the location.
I will have to say that telstra customer services has been ridiculously frustrating especially the online help chat.

        Im going back to optus.

      • -2

WORST TELCO AND WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE OF ANY COMPANY

      • +1

NBN is a freaking joke if you live regional, it’s not much faster than my old adsl 2 connection. 4g beats my nbn connection. Vodafone, Optus, Telstra, resellers all best it. That Felix deal is better than my nbn. Unfortunately fttn seems to be a big waste of money.

      • In my area:

        NBN - 22Mpbs.
        Telstra 4G - 10Mbps.
        Optus 4G - 200Mbps.

    • +1

Have a look at their coverage map. More than patchy in Sydney

      Hello floptus

  • -1

FYI - For the first 12 months on a 24 month contract. Reverts back to $119 after the first 12 months.

Edit: Appears to be month to month?

    • +7

      There's no contract

      • +1

Optus has no contract for about year now.

  • -1

500GB per month or over 12 months, ie 41 GB a month?

    • I'm assiming it's 500gb per month .

    • 500GB per month

    • +3

500gb/month + Endless data at 1.5 Mbps once 500gb over without any extra charges

      • That’s good, but Vodafone endless data is faster. So hopefully that means Optus will become more competitive soon.

  • -7

Where's my 500 dollar gift card ?? no gift card no money

  • +2

The trick is to have one of these and put several family members on a basic $19.50/month plan (same name, same account, and share the data between you).
    That's what I do.
Also, in the first month I had 700GB+ of data (data from old plan + data from new plan)

    • I do this! Also have 4 data sharing 4G sims from grandfathered plans that I use in tablets/modems.

      • If only they still offered those sim cards! I'd sign up.

        • I'm pretty sure Optus still do the $15 share sim. You need to call and ask for it or go to a store and ask them about it.

      • Are you talking about the one off $5 data share SIM that Optus offered ages ago? I thought those needed to be attached to a plan below for it to data share?

        • My Plan Plus
        • My Plan Plus SIM Only
        • My Plan Plus 12M SIM
        • My Plan Business
        • My Plan Business SIM

    • +3

The cheapest SIM only plan is $39 how do you get a $19.50 plan?

      • +1

19.50 is half of 39. Try the half price for 12 months port in deal from Telstra/Voda.

        • Link? Cant find any reference to it.

  • +6

    Nice find Askhole.

  • -3

Got this optus one for two mth since the first time it popped up last December. Signals are so weak and the customer servo of Indian was horrible truly. Just quitted and back to telstra. Too much hassle with optus. Sighh

    • That's a pity, I get very good 5G where I am but have to admit that 4G is hit and miss.

    • +1

If you want Optus with customer service go with Catch Connect. Optus customer service has always been the worst possible.

    • +3

At least you get to speak to someone with Optus…. good luck speaking to anyone at Telstra…

Optus one is supposed to give you dedicated Optus one support… I had this plan ever since it got released at full price. The Optus one support from Melbourne is fantastic!

    • +2

@duodeta The whinge is nice, so you do it twice!

    • Just curious man, which state suburb are you having this experience in?

  • +3

This plan has opened doors to great optus service for me. Previously had three meh plans with Optus ( one just finished contract with handset) costing 120 a month for shared 80gb.

Signed up to this plan, cancelled NBN at my office and called to add 10 GB data Sim for 4g router at office for 15/m (M2M. Whilst I was trying to negotiate for free data with a domestic CS agent, they offered me a monthly credit to cover a few months of the data Sim instead (not bad). Was then offered to port in my kids phones with a 24 month half price discount on the 39/m plan (also M2M), now paying roughly 160/month for 6 lines and 600+GB a month, replacing my 80/month hfc NBN. 4g Speeds are comparable in South East Melbourne

You can't find this value elsewhere before you consider Optus sport, international calls on two of the lines etc.

    Big Optus fan ATM.

  • wish they would bring back the 40 dollar 200g plan

    • Yeah that’s what I’m paying on Vodafone with endless data which slows to 10 Mbps after you use 200gb. I was with Optus but they couldn’t offer a comparable plan.

    • One way would be to do the new customer 24 month Harvey Norman $85pm no upfront cost for a S21+ 256gb phone, 150gb/month. If you sold the phone you'd be down to around the $40/month for 150gb/month.

      • I'm actually more into the international calls and roaming, I know we can't go anywhere right now but it's good to dream.

  • +2

Have never had trouble with Optus at my previous residences around metro suburbs.

The only reason I had to switch back to Telstra was for 3g/4g coverage throughout remote locations.

This is an awesome deal for anyone who stays in residential areas.

  • I moved to this plan last year from the previous Telstra 'premium' Unlimited offering and its been great bar the much slower data speeds and patchy coverage outside metro areas.

    • It’s funny you say that because my friend on his Telstra iPhone and me at the time on my Optus SGS9+ We did the speed test and I obliterated him 30 v 230mbps

      • Yeah definitely not like that in brissy and I do tests all the time

  • currently on this plan - has anyone tried to extend using this new plan for example?

  • With data share, can I just buy a $2 sim and put it in my wifi modem?

    • For data sharing.. "You can connect any combination of eligible Postpaid mobile and mobile broadband plans."

    • +1

Yes. Just confirmed this on optus chat. Combine with $15 month data sim

  • This looks like it's be ideal for a phone/data plan? As in using it for you're general internet, maybe even Gaming?
I have no idea how much data people use via Netflix or gaming online however!

    • It all depends on location. I tried to do this switching from Telstra to Optus in November last year. Swapped back a month later. In my area (Toowong) Telstra 4G (I was on an old plan) was 3 times faster than Optus 5G.

My ping on Telstra is around 25-30 where on Optus it was 50-60.

Many people have reported Telstra being better, and many people have reported the opposite. It purely comes down to where you live, congestion on towers etc.

  • Thought I signed up to this at the discounted rate but found out a month after signing up that I'm ineligible for the discount due to it being a rate change and not a new contract, porting or new service. This is despite being able to checkout online with my existing service and with all discounts listed. Very frustrating!

  • keep my $85 500gb full speed 4g optus, or this one for 1 year…

  • First try prepaid sim on all carriers before committing
Vodafail a similar one for $60 pm
For me vodafail works the best

    • Why not pick Felix then for $35/m?

  • +1

Optus 4g 3.5 hrs from Brisbane better than Telstra less congestion, more reliable.

Did a 3.5wk trip from bottom of Qld to Cairns area, Optus better signal in all lived in areas then Telstra. Telstra only better for roadside driving in woop woop

  • According to the T&C’s, you can’t use this sim in a dedicated 4g modem. Can anybody confirm?

    • Yes I read that but it still wouldn't stop me trying it. You're not locked into a contract so you can always leave if they decide to take action.

      • Good point. I wonder if they have any method of knowing its in a modem or if they’re just bluffing to ward people off.

        • +1

          I don't know, probably bluffing.

Anyway I just noticed another unlimited data only option for modem use - $75 per month & it comes with a 5G modem (4G Backup).
This is month to month as well.

          • @WatchNerd: Wow, that’s a great deal. Unfortunately not available at my house, the search continues!

            • @Dogsrule: It has 4G backup, so I'm guessing you could just use 4G all the time.

              • +1

@WatchNerd: I get a ‘sorry this plan is not available at your location’ notice when I put my address in, so they won’t let me buy it even for the 4g backup. Been on Optus 4g with a dedicated modem and roof antenna for 4 years now and coming to the end of my plan, guess they don’t want me as a customer anymore.

It seems I might be dragged kicking and screaming onto the NBN after all, but I will try this 500gb deal in my modem first - hopefully it works, I’ll let everyone know if it does.

                • @Dogsrule: It works, I used it for a few months.

                  • @TomGum: This exact plan? I notice that this plan is called 'Optus One' and the T&C's are different than the other mobile data plans which are called 'Optus Choice'.

                    • @Dogsrule: Same exact plan. I don’t think they care. But that doesn’t mean they may not care in the future.

        • They can definitely tell what kind of device the SIM card is in.

I used to do this back when they had the $2 a day plans on 3G. I would put the SIM card in a 3G USB modem.

Occasionally, they would suspend my service and I needed to call them back to get it activated again. They told me that in the T&C’s that the sim plan is for use in mobiles only.

  • -4

Hard to switch from Telatra coverage, great price but their service is not comparable to Telstra.

  • I am also wanting to know whether this simcard can be used in a modem. My house is not NBN ready, so I am looking to get 4G or 5G internet through a dedicated modem.

  • How to get a cheap 5g modem to be used with this sim???

  • Where I live in regional Victoria, I get the same if not better coverage with Optus.

  • Reading above, for those who want to use the Optus One sim in a modem, it had been reported that it is not permitted. Some can't get a connection and some can connect but shaped speed straight away. Others got the Nokia 5G modem and mod it to work in full speed. Don't ask me how as i don't need a modem. This is only what I read in comment.

The official way to do it is to get the $65 plan then apply for a $15 data sim which some report can be have for $12. You will then able to use that data sim in a modem and access the 500G from the Optus one plan.

    • How do you get a data sim for $12?

    • I did exactly this. Use the apn ConnectLTE (not Connect as they instruct or else you get shaped speeds). So I’m paying $80pm for phone and internet faster than the NBN!

  • UGH. Got my first bill. Got a new SIM with a new service. They've charged me a pro-rata amount of the full $119!
