  • Is it safe to use this for diy oil changes? I have a mate that uses 2 jacks to raise his car and I keep telling him how dangerous it is

    • +3

Your mate should not be using two car jacks to do any work on the car. If the jacks fail, he will get crushed. Either use ramps or axle stands. I can't stress this enough.

      • If the jacks are scissor jacks then it can't fail (since the jacks is screwed rather than using hydraulic liquid - which could burst or leak and unlike car hoists, these trolley jacks don't have locks when the piping does burst or leak and the car suddenly falls down….with locks it'd at least hit one of the hard locks immobilizing it…) unless the car was in motion whilst jacking up or underneath for whatever reason(Or the scissor jack was positioned in some awkward position that could slip if it's not used to lift from the sills of the car, for example lifting the sub frame or crossmember), since the base of the scissor jack is pretty small, it could flip over when the moves was only intended to lift from the sills and not anywhere else….

I'd probably buy him a set of jack stands and/or ramps as a gift.

Getting under a car supported only by jacks is so so so dangerous!!

Even when I use jack stands, I still leave the jacks in place also. You can never be too careful working under cars.

I prefer jack stands myself to ramps as it gives me flexibility if I need to remove wheels to check brake pads and/or rotate tyres front to back.

Bear in mind some of these ramps will require extension pieces as cars with low bumpers (which is a lot of modern cars) will not fit up them without hitting the bumper - another reason why I prefer jack stands.

I have a big 3000kg jack which goes really high, which saves a lot of time as I then jack the car from the middle/front on the frame, then put both jack stands under at once, then gently lower - ie I don't have to fiddle around with jacking each side.

$40 for a pair - why you would risk your life not using these I don't know.

    • All very good points made by Deuce and Placard. Also keep in mind a pair of these ramps will hold a car weighing up to 2 tonnes. If the car weighs more get jack stands that can hold 3 tonnes.

      • I highly doubt either the front or the back to weight more than 2T….unless you're trying to get under a full blown semi trailer truck or one of those big ass freight trucks….or a forklift, forklifts are pretty heavy and weigh over 2T for mostly at the back…. In total yes, but not just the front or just the back which is what you would use a pair of these for….but I guess you could get a weigher to see how much your car actually weighs….so you can figure out which stands and ramps you need….

    • These are exactly the right sort of thing to use. Final oil level should be checked when car is on level ground.

Otherwise as noted a pair of jack stands is a cheap way to do it safely and leave the jack as a back up if you can. Also you/he should chock the wheels on the ground.

Never trust a jack(s) on their own.

Definitely an issue with low bumpers on a lot of modern cars. None of my cars are able to drive straight on to ramps which makes them a pain to use. I have a set of quickjacks now though. Before that it was a 3T low profile jack in the middle, lift a whole end and then place two jack stands at once.

So yeah basically everything placard said :)
