Better off using this link to the promo: https://bydautomotive.com.au/event/byd-shark-6-offer/384931

For a limited time, all ABN holders can enjoy a $0 deposit and a 1.99% PA. interest rate for a 36 month term on a new BYD SHARK 6 Premium delivered between 12 May and 30 June 2025. It's our way of keeping your journey toward innovation, efficiency, and electric excellence right on track.

    • Thanks, replaced.

    • What happens if they deliver it later than expected?

      • I doubt its as strict as the FBT exemption. Maybe they'll 'deliver' it on paper but give a loaner?

        • +1

Just remember FBT exemption ended on hybrid/phev vehicles 1st April.

Just wondering with everyone driving around utes will realise that their accountant is probably payin the FBT and not telling their clients…

          • +6

@CalmLemons: It only ends for orders from that date, not existing loans

            • +3

@greater mimic: sorry to clarify I mean a lot of people even before the exemption were buying cars, their accountants were applying fbt, just never really explain it to clients cause that's a nightmare.

      • +1

This is what I don't understand.

Not sure if they have a good supply of inventory otherwise, you could just be throwing yourself into a disappointing experience. I'm pretty sure the Sea Lion and Seal take 2-3 months to be delivered. There were early reports of the Shark around when it was being released that demand was outstripping supply. Not sure if this has been resolved.

        • +4

There's definitely a sizeable backlog. Ordered a seal in Feb. Was told April, then May and now June

        • +1

All I know (current ordered) is that you pay $1k refundable deposit, so you can get out of it

      • +4

        You're not jv.

        • +10

jv is not a person, it's an idea

        • +1

I never claimed to be jv - just being myself, and that’s more than enough

      • +17

You got some contradictory statements in there.

        • +2

How? BYD shark has a petrol engine. Ford Ranger is Diesel (except Raptor). they might either prefer electric, or diesel for ute application.
this product is not really suited for a towing focused use case

        • -1

No, I believe you're confused, as are the 6 people who + your comment.

      • +3

Ha, part of why I never upgraded to a new ute is the nightmare that comes with a new diesel vehicle, especially if you just use it for short trips (like I would). Glad to see petrol hybrids offering benefits over diesel and straight petrol!

Also these are literally faster than a ranger raptor. I'm planning on one for my next car.

        • +6

          Username checks out :D

        • -4

it would be the fastest car in the world people still like ford rangers.

      • -1

petrol and electric should always work together, not against each other.

      • +4

There's definitely one thing ford rangers will never be beaten for.. being tailgating (profanity)

        • +2

          Can't spell Ranger without anger

      • +2

I lost brain cells reading this comment.

        • I wonder how far can people go

        • So you are lower than the average Australian 99 IQ now?

  • +8

Fair warning that BYD in Australia is pretty slammed for orders at the moment. Expect delays and things like trim to come delayed. Dealer support is a bit hit and miss since they're overwhelmed too.

    • +22

They are considering a rebrand to 'Being Your Delay'

      • +1

Considering I will be getting my boot liner and others their floor matts 3-4 months after getting the car, that is true..

If you call up they just go “🤷‍♂️ do you know how busy it is right now”

        • +1

Maybe for accessories, but the cars themselves are moving much faster.

          • +1

@ATangk: If you’re in the Car FB chats, that all changed within the last 1-2 months. They’re quite delayed now.

            • @JSONBourne: You can get in a shark in a month or so, SL7 maybe 2 months. The accessories are the delays, so I'm not sure whats changed.

        • It amazes me that you can build a whole car quicker than you can manufacture a car mat.

          • @hornoscous: BYD is vertical from parts to fabrication, assembly and delivery. But I bet they don't make accessories inhouse, hence delays.

        • My Atto 3 mats only came 2 months late, unfortunately they're the wrong colour.

          • +1

@sween64: A scary thought if you're in an accident and need part replacement.

      • -1

        Better than Burn Your Dreams.

  • Seen lots of testing videos on this Shark 6 lately.

White collar worker here, the amount of my colleagues buying utes or who have one is getting to a point where I am really questioning the use of these things. A guy who runs our bookkeeping has a Ford Ranger, our associate adviser has a Hilux, I really don't get what the fascination with utes are other than very niche uses cases (weekend trips here and there). Why are utes so popular among white collar people? It's also popular on Ozbargain.

    • +10

Similar reasons as to why they’re popular in the USA and Canada.
Small dicks, just-in-case towing, perhaps some off-roading.

      • +32

By off-roading you mean parking on the front lawn, right?

      • +2

Lots of boomers getting them for their $100k caravans

        • +1

Seriously, I never got caravans. Why?!
They’re so much harder to manoeuvre in, especially when compared to campervans and motorhomes that are one unit.
          Maybe because they’re cheap and/or free-standing?

          • +1

@FujinShu: Much more convenient to just dump your caravan and set up at a park and drive around.

      • What about those that buy SUVs, sports cars, or god forbid …a red car.
It’s called personal choice. Why are you so judgy abt it

        • +1

The same people who think their political party are the "good guys", the others are evil and their voters are brainwashed idiots.

    • +6

overtaking in a ute looks cooler according to no one

    • +13

Why are utes so popular among white collar people? It's also popular on Ozbargain.

Probably because they can be claimed on tax as a business expense.

      • the guy is a white collar worker and these are his colleagues. I'm gonna assume they're not ABN holders.

        • +3

Exempt from FBT if provided by the employer. Payload greater than 1 tonne, but no one gives a shit about checking that. Raptors, Rogues, etc go nowhere near it.

        • +1

Yeah, we're all who we pretend to be online.

      • +1

Sounds like an oversight by the ATO…

      • It can be any car really, it doesn't need to be a ute.

    • +9

Emotional support vehicle. Are your colleagues insecure?

      • Why is your first thought to call it emotional support vehicles and insecurity. Have you ever owned one?

    • +6

Makes no sense to me either.

They're ugly and very unpleasant/not fun to drive; I really don't see why you'd ever want one as your daily driver, especially if living in the city.

Whenever I need one (which is once every ~5 years) I just rent one from bunnings for $77 a day.

    • +12

I see plenty of mums driving utes in the neighborhood for school drop offs and groceries. Not that it's wrong, but I definitely wonder if they use it for anything outside of general suburb commute.

Also, just my personal rant… because I drive a small hatchback, when these cars stop next to me on runabouts my view get absolutely blocked from oncoming traffic. So, I either have to go on the inside lane or buy a bigger car so I can see past them :/

      • +18

because I drive a small hatchback, when these cars stop next to me on runabouts my view get absolutely blocked from oncoming traffic

what's ridiculous is that people are buying bigger cars because they have visibility issues due to the big cars everywhere

or they're worried about being worse off in a collision with a bigger car

it's becoming an arms race where people are buying bigger and bigger cars just so that they don't have the smaller car. it's madness.

        • +4

You know what. Just few weeks ago I witnessed a ute exiting a carpark and hitting the stationary car parked next to her because she didn't notice the smaller car and assumed she could just take a hard left while exiting her spot..

          • @John: as a fellow small hatch driver it's annoying that we could easily be the stationary car in that scenario

          • +4

@John: This happened to us, we had a low but factory height sports car and parked into a car park next to a Nissan patrol with a lift kit.
Right after we went in the whole way into the park, the driver of the Patrol whilst we were still in the car proceeded to reverse out, by immediately swinging into our park and side swiped the car with the lower part of his bullbar! He was too tall and had not realised we were there in the parking spot since he had walked past the park and climbed in.

The f… tard never paid up either - it was somehow our fault in his demented mind, and there was not enough damage to take legal action and about equal with the excess on a sports car so didn't go through insurance and risk putting premiums up for little gain, plus being in a private car park and low value damage the police wouldn't do anything either.

            • +3

@MrFrugalSpend: Premiums don't go up for not at fault claims

Being parked stationary is probably a good position to claim not at fault

              • +1

@ozbjunkie: Premiums do go up even for not at fault claims I'm pretty sure.

For example I remember when getting Budget insurance quotes and they ask for your claims history, once I re-did my quote with a not at fault claim the quote went up.

                Can anyone else confirm?

              • @ozbjunkie: Hmm… i didn't really think about that but makes sense. We let it go too long thinking insurance wasn't worth it and that he was going to pay as it was only a few hundred damage to revert back to lodging a claim once it became obvious he shafted us (we finally got onto him from a new number but by then he tried to re-write history like it was our fault somehow) - was too far-gone.

      • +5

Depending on the load they can carry dual cab utes can be FBT exempt. Which is why I'd say you see mums driving them.

Hubbie must be a tradie or self employed

      • +6

I see it as "F you, I got mine". People get oversized cars for their safety and their kids, but don't give a rats ass about the people outside of it.

      • +2

I hate the proliferation of these massive trucks and 4wd everywhere. But I also own one almost exclusively
to tow a caravan at least 6 times a year. Driving on the highways its great. Around town, not so much.

A lot of the utes are useful for that and it's no secret that camping/ caravanning has gone nuts since covid.

      • +2

Yep, from what I've seen around victoria especially the freeways, its about every 8 in 10 massive ute drivers are middle aged women.

        • +11

You can see how it happens, need a new car.

Dad thinks a Ute looks cool.
Mum is impressed with the car like interior and features.
We might go camping with the kids.
          Good for towing.
Remember when we had to move that thing for your sister? Ute would have been handy.

          Another Ranger owner is born.

    • +1

The vast majority of them are shithouse drivers as well… and almost all the drivers look the same.

    • -1

It’s poor man’s modern sports car, as in purchase based on fantasy of being a weekend warrior but really they are a keyboard warrior rather in reality

      • I don’t think those people are out there posting and insulting people for buying a sedan.
So who really is the keyboard warrior here? ;)

    • +8

      Convenience?

Trips to the tip, throw the bikes in the back, the odd camping trip, taking new purchases home, dropping the broken mower down to the shop, diy bunnings pick ups.

White collar worker here too, I use the tray of my ute all the time - once you have one you quickly appreciate the convenience it gives you.

      • +1

This, it’s not every day. Have a caravan that I tow. Kids that play baseball and a ton of gear to carry around. No compromise on boot space and can throw everything in, chairs, tables and all sorts.

Load it up for the local dump, picking up marketplace items.

      • Trips to the tip, throw the bikes in the back, the odd camping trip, taking new purchases home, dropping the broken mower down to the shop, diy bunnings pick ups.

Ah, perfect for the modern day consumerist!

Take old crap to landfil, pick up new crap to take home, rinse and repeat.

    • +3

they shop at costco every 8 weeks and clog up car parks the rest of the time.

I have a 99 hilux. Hunting, fishing, outdoors stuff. My job is a network engineer.

    • +1

Park in loading zones in the cbd?

    • Rangers are pretty popular on salary sacrifice lease plans

    • +3

Went to Korea for a month - was great not seeing dual cab utes.

      • +1

Japan - not a ute to be seen anywhere. Was glorious.

    • +1

A guy who runs our bookkeeping has a Ford Ranger, our associate adviser has a Hilux, I really don't get what the fascination with utes

Keeping up with the blokes at footy training etc.. who are tradies. They don't want to admit that MS Excel is their life

    • +1

maybe they don't have a boring life like many white collar workers

  • +3

How does the ford raptor range compete with these prices? Do they drop it 30k to match? The byd has electricity cost advantage. Short ford

    • +7

Isn’t a raptor like double the price?

      • it is but isnt this ute as good as a raptor?

    • +2

I don’t think ford has a price match guarantee.

    • sounds like YOU

      • -1

Maybe everyone thus prices so high used on Hilux.

    • +23

      Slightly used
      150000km
      Pick one

      • From an uber driver perspective…

    • You missed the /s
