Cannon Alpha PHEV Lux $51,490 Drive Away, PHEV Ultra $60,490 Drive Away @ GWM

471

Similar to the last deal here but now dropped another $2K according to the GWM page.

Looks like they got rid of the hybrid (HEV) ute in favour of the PHEV only.

PHEV lux looks like a great deal for those looking for a ute that leans more into comfort + good towing.

its not an ev its a hybrid they really to stop conning people in to thinking they are getting an ev.

      • +1

I didnt say it was an ev? Who are you replying to mate

        • Hahahaha true. I think the AI I having s hallucinations.

  • +9

These are nice cars but remember you are an early adopter.
Based on the Fb group discussions, you'll need to wait months for parts at times with after market service support is as good as in third world counties.
If you need it for work and you'll lose money if it's not running, think twice.

    • +13

that's poor from GWM, they've been here for years and they are no small company. I had a repair on my Geely recent and it was done within 3 days so it's not a chinese car problem.

      • I agree. Hugely damaging for the brand.
I think the quality of the car is actually acceptable especially compared to the price. I wouldn't mind two extra trips to the service compared to a Toyota as long as the service was prompt and predictable. Waiting for windshield and simple pullies, as per complains, for months is very poor form.
Maybe if they start selling direct and skip the middle man who is only interested in new sales but not in maintenance, it will change?

    • +3

That’s pretty standard across the board

Even Toyota has 6 month wait times for parts now in places

  • How many GWM vehicles are here when they came to Australia previously?

    • +2

I still see heaps on the road to be fair

    • They've been in Australia for 16 years, just appointed John Kett a veteran of the Australian Automotive industry who was running Hyundai Australia. Looks like they are playing for keeps. A full interview on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu4EXib8lP4

    • back in the days they were sold by a distributor and was just called great wall and sales was mediocre at best, there's probably a vfact somewhere with the numbers. Distribution have since been taken over by the manufacturer and been rebranded as GWM.

just makes their new tank 500 phev price (close to 80k) more ridicious.

    • +1

Yeah I don't understand their pricing - $50k for the ute and an extra $30k for the wagon, seems crazy.

    • I reckon there's at least $30k worth of fat in it that they can trim as discounts as sales slow.

Admittedly no one would be buying this over a toyota prado (unless they wanted to skip the waitlist.

LDV does cheap and cheerful - but well specc'd 4wding better $40-$50k for a D90.

    $25K depreciation in 1 year

    • +13

where do I get an year old one for half price? I'd buy it in a heartbeat

      • +1

        They alreaady have V2L

      • i said it will drop $25k next year..not selling at $25K

        • that doesnt make any sense, the resale value is whatever the highest price next person is willing to pay. what exactly is dropping 25k then?

    • I says you are dreaming, 2 years ago when I looking at a 2nd non-hybrid Canon, it still hold good value.

Recently had extremely bad experience with GWM Blackburn/Australia.

Denied warranty because car was not serviced with them, now heading to VCAT.

Have to rent a car at own cost for six weeks as well.

      • +32

Because contracts or T&Cs can't contradict Australian Consumer Laws.

This scenario has been tested many times in court. If it's within the warranty period (and sometimes beyond), they will win in court.

    • +9

Good. (profanity) these businesses who think they're above the law and the people.

    • -3

I think there is more to the story.

      • +2

Do tell us the rest of the story then.

      • +3

3 years in, 6 years warranty.

98K at break down, first 3 service done with dealer, last 5 done outside.

Service interval one year or 15k.

From their own report, which they wouldn't provide for over two months, its because a piece of metal from turbo broke and got into the engine.

        • Did John Cadogan? feature your car problem on his utube recently? Sounds familiar.

          • @mauricem: Funnily enough he bought one of these to replace his tried and tested Triton (ultra spec).

Maybe he's spewing from these price drops

          • @mauricem: No, but I did put it up on other social media.

            A lots of similar stories.

Chinese company doing their Chinese tactics on Hard Working Australian.

    • -3

Usually you have to get the car serviced with them for warranty to be covered.

      98k in 3 years is a lot.

      • +5

        That's illegal

        • +2

For extended warranty that is legal

  • +1

I thought this was a camera deal

    • +4

Yeah, I also thought this clearly labeled GWM deal posted in the automotive section was for a camera.

    • +1

Canon R5 + Sony Alpha = Cannon Alpha
      The ultimate camera.

      • +1

        I’d buy one haha

  • the PHEV has great specs and looks awesome, pity about that spare wheel though

    • At least it has a spare wheel (Looking at you Mitsubshi Outlands PHEV and Subaru Forester hybrid)

    • +2

I see a heap of them around, they used to make some lemons but aside from issues with service and after sales as mentioned their cars are a lot better nowadays

    • +2

What are you on about? i see more cannons on the roads than i do hiluxs these days.

      • -1

I guess you live in… Humbler suburbs.

I don't see any at all anymore.

        • similarly in metro, they are everywhere. I guess you live in more.. remote ones

    • Not sure whereabout u located but in Sydney there're heaps on the road

    • seeing more and more on the roads in Brisbane

  • +6

These drive great and are quite the upgrade from the standard cannons. for the price if its what your after its a bit of a no brainer. I run the Alpha PHEV page with over 1000 members and im seeing very little issues with them.

    • Are people generally actually taking the spare wheel along or just leaving it off?

      • For daily driving, my neighbour takes the spare tyre off with NRMA roadside assist as backup if he gets a puncture to tow it back home / tyre repair shop. For Interstate holiday drives with the family, the spare goes in the tray again but laying down and not standing up.

Lol the resale on GWMs. Paying for actual garbage

    • It will be the same for all chinese EV’s. So many have been purchased on novated lease due to the government incentive and they will all start rolling off leases and onto the market at the same time

      • My mate took a 50k payrise to work for GWM and quit after a few months after seeing how many problems they have

        • In australia? How so what were the problems?

      • all chinese EV’s

NL an used EV would save you even more then

      • +3

Cheap EVs on the second hand market sounds good to me.

  • +2

Based on the reviews, this is one of the real cheaper PHEV utes in the market unlike the Shark which is also a good vehicle but more for blokes and gals who want a pretend ute.

  • These look great, I could probably do most of my driving for nearly free using solar. Most of my trips are well under 100km. The only thing I don't like is the black grill and wheels - I wonder if they could colour code the grill or something?

    • EV mode is good and well but don't expect same power levels as in Hybrid mode.

  • The price looks very attractive. how are the resale value for these? Been hearing a lot about the resale value of Chinese cars are pretty bad.

    • Because Chinese cars are updated at lightning speed with new engines, drivelines, tech and features even as short as 2 years, your model does become obsolete quite fast vs buying a let's say Toyota. Saying that, GWM hold their values better than BYD and other makes of Chinese cars with the Cannon ute (the smaller version) holding similar resale values as a Ford Ranger. This Alpha model is an all new model so there is not enough data on resale value yet but I would say the diesel model will hold it's value the best and EV assisted ones will hold their values the worst in 6 - 10 years.

      • look at the tank 500 (think that's the same frame used in the canon alpha)..it lost $20k in 1 year.. people who bought it for $70k are listing it for less than $50k now..some with just 10k kms driven. I would say the resale value is very poor. if ur buying one of these Chinese cars, decide not to sell it for the next 5 years (if it lasts) and then sell it for peanuts.

        • Send Links for less than $50k Tank 500 Ultra Hybrid with 10,000km. Let's see.
