    or is AMD better?

      • -1

Personally, I'd take the Ryzen but here's them benched

        • +1

Userbenchmark has a history of fluffing their benchmarks to favour intel, so don't trust them

      • +1

Bezels seem thinner on this model.

      • +1

The AMD version still has wifi 5 while this machine has wifi 6.

    • Pity about the soldered RAM

      • It says 2 x 4GB; which to me, seems like it’s not soldered?

        • Could be one soldered while the other being swappable.

    • How are Acer laptops as far as reliability and build quality? Never owned one

      • +3

Build quality is always shite. Cheap plastic, feels like a 10 year old laptop.

      • +1

Had a 2020 Swift 5, terrible build quality and had to send it back to have the screen replaced, if you’re coming from MacBook/Surface/Dell/Lenovo, you will be pretty disappointed with the build quality.

I've had an E1-571G for several years now and it hasn't let me down once. Added a stick of RAM and an SSD plus replaced the battery twice via eBay. Bought it secondhand off OCAU. Only minor gripe is the colours of Gumtree.com.au don't render too well: the green is too bright. All other websites and photos etc display fine.

Cheap plastic, terrible screen, trash manufacturer support =Acer

      • +1

I have an Acer Aspire that I got from a HN deal a year or so ago. It's awesome. It was only $470 and has a 1080p IPS screen, great build quality, wifi 6, 8 GB RAM, USB Type C, gigabit Ethernet. It's only a dual core i3, but it's 10th gen, so it's pretty snappy

    Screen nits?

  • Pity about the soldered RAM

so ? solder or not ? oh you mean the 8 is soldered

      • +2

Seems from here the 8GB is soldered and 1 x expansion slot.

You have a 8GB 2666MHz onboard memory and a 8GB 3200MHz removable module in the slot, so the system will run at 2666MHz(lower frequency of the two).

        • So does this laptop only support DDR4 2666 in the extra slot? 16gb dual channel 2666 Vega 6 doesn't sound too bad, might even be able to run GTA v on low settings?

  • I've been looking to grab a laptop to install linux on, unfortunately it looks like these acers are a bit too much to much of a hassle with linux. Anyone have any experience with them?

  • Sorry bit confused here ,which one has the upgradeable ram,the ryzen or the Intel version

    • +1

This is a very uninformed and not correct guess. But, recent Intel Tigerlake CPUs often only have a single SODIMM slot. So it's likely the ryzen one will be the upgradeable.

Sorry bit confused here ,which one has the upgradeable ram,the ryzen or the Intel version

  • Nice

  • Looking for a new laptop as my Dell crapped itself. Choice is a Dell 15 5000 with i5-1135g7 and a 2gb mx330, or this?

    Thoughts?

Does this have space inside for a second SSD?(2.5" or nvme?) And to make the ram dual channel?(anyone know the ram speed that comes on the motherboard?)

I assume the 8gb is soldered here with 1 slot to upgrade?

Backlit keyboard? Basic gaming?(my 8th gen i7 runs GTA5 so I'd imagine the 4500u would?)

  • How hot does it get when gaming on this laptop?

  • Got the Intel model and so far it seems very good for the price. Seems solid and has an aluminium lid with a backlit keyboard. There seems to be nothing else around this price range with decent specs atm anyway (and im talking retail only). Also i think the intel model has been newly released, wasnt on display.

    • Do you know if there is a spare RAM slot in this Intel model thanks?

      • Sorry wouldnt know. I checked bios and it didnt really tell me anything and physically cant tell (without opening it up). I would think a laptop like this would have atleast one slot upgradeable, since its price is around the 900 mark normally and thats not considered low end.

        • No worries. Just found this post in another forum so I'm guessing the same applies.

Spec for the Aspire A515-56 says:
          System Memory
DDR4 2666/3200 SODIMM memory interface design:
          Support on-board memory (4GB)
          DDR4 SODIMM slot x 1, up to 20GB (max.)
So you should be able to put a single 8GB or 16GB stick in, not two 8GBs.

          • @rooon: Thats good to know and for general use i think i wouldnt upgrade it anyway.
