Anything of this quality without the shitty gamer look?

    • +5

      LG OLED

      • -4

Thanks. I'll grab the next 5k they release - the reviews aren't great of the current model and 4k isn't enought for 32"+.

        • +1

Simply not true. 32” @ 1440p is extremely comfortable for gaming and productivity.

          • -8

            @tedzr: LOL. Ok pleb.

            • +1

@KLoNe: It's true. You mightn't have tried it, but its extremely comfortable. Windows 10 desktop at 100% scale looks very good in terms of native size of icons and text while the extra height from a regular 16:9 ratio at this size makes productivity quite achievable. Gaming is also very enjoyable at 1440p and easier to drive with decent framerates than 4k. I've been using a Dell S3220DGF for about a year and I like it.

Had this 38" monitor and deal been available at the time I settled on the 3220 (approx $500), I probably would have bought it. Either way, $1600 is a healthy whack of cash to depart with for a monitor, but truthfully it's probably worth while. I think 38" is the sweet spot in terms of usable desktop space if you want a single monitor style setup (not a super-ultrawide or dual-monitor setup) and monitors tend to last for many years. Dell is a great brand. I have a 24" 16:10 monitor I bought off them 10+ years ago that has served me very well and still works, although it is gathering dust. Back then I remember it costing north of $1000. Never regretted that purchase one iota.

Anyway, your comments are pretty toxic hey. But I guess it's not like I'm a saint either. Swings and roundabouts.

      • OLED has burn-in issues. I use an LG 55" OLED for my main TV and with a PC it is showing some burn-in issues.

        • What model oled is it?

    • I've got one and once you disable the stupid RGB everywhere, it's actually pretty subtle. Stick it on a monitor arm and you'd be hard pressed to tell it's a gaming monitor at all (from front on anyway).

      • Thanks for the heads up man. I'll check out some pics on an arm.

        • Can also confirm this. I have it on an arm and you can’t see the white backing of it. It’s very professional looking from the front. Obviously ignore the fact my actual PC is RGB as heck

          https://imgur.com/a/Ejbnqns

      • Which monitor arm would be recommended for this display ?

        • Loctek Monitor Mount Heavy Duty Gas Spring Swing Monitor Arm Desk Mount Stand Fits for 10-34 inches Monitor Weighting 13.2-33 lbs - D7L - I got it from Amazon US.

I have the 27" version and it will hold the 38 no problem. So much adjustment its an overkill for the 27" ultrawide.

        • Varidesk make a monitor arm which i use on my 38” AW and it holds no problems either. The only reason I’d recommend this one over others is the base of the arm which connects to the desk is much larger so the weight is distributed better to not damage your desk or potentially cave in like I’ve seen others do online.

          https://www.vari.com/au/en/single-monitor-arm/MA-SINGLE.html

100% ignore the fact it says 27” Max. I believe that just applies if you want to put another arm on there and you wouldn’t be able to stretch the arms to fit two monitors side by side larger than 27”. The maximum weight is 9kg. I had the X34P on this for two years and recently put the AW on it. No problem at all.

  • Just gonna keep watching this bad boy falling in price until the day that I move into a house (hopefully this year) and I finally have room for this :-)

  • -1

Geeze talk about having a bs rrp Dell. This marketing decision worked from them though, everyone thinks they're getting a killer deal.

  • +3

I looked around at other G-Sync HDR IPS 38in monitor panels and they are all above $2k so this is a good deal.

    • -2

FYI This is just a rebranded LG 38gn950-b

      • +4

Not at all, this has a hardware Gsync module, but no USBC port. It does use the same panel though

        • If the LG can OC to 165hz, do you know if the Dell can? Given its the same panel as you said? Or is that more of a hardware thing

          • @Pelicannn: No it can't from what I've seen, though with these prices I wouldn't even be considering the LG

            • @cille745: Cheers mate!

Yeah Naar I didn’t. I bought this in the last sale and luckily had purchased a dell XPS only recently too so I picked it up for $1468 with the voucher.

  • Price going lower, buy now regret later. That 27in monitor has lot of remorseful buyers as it hit lowest $399 yesterday

    • Its worth it at $2200, I don't see it ever going below $1500 because Acer / Asus equivalent monitors never go on such big sales, LG rarely but they're overpriced anyway.

  • +7

There isn't a better monitor on the market in this price ball-park (let alone price range). Next best would be $4,000+ monitors not even available to buy off the shelf in most countries, certainly not available on any Australian retailer websites.

TBH its worth even $2200 which is a massive spend for a monitor, so for under $1600 its a steal, it is absolutely massive and you get used to it within a few days. One slight issue is if you're sitting a little close and you need to rotate the screen for someone else to see, your eyes will start burning after a couple of min being so close (since turning such a large curved screen brings it a lot closer to you) even at 30% brightness. I wouldn't recommend using this thing at full brightness outside gaming as it will just kill your eyes in no time. HDR is a gimmick and given its not full array local dimming you won't really see a difference in games with it switched on, other than the increased brightness itself (which on Forza Horizon is a big difference). You definitely don't want HDR turned on while not gaming as the dimming zones are extremely distracting on dark applications.

Tip for everyone is to turn down refresh rate to 120hz so that you can use 10-bit colour, makes a difference in games even though some say it doesn't. Oh and you will need a big desk with at least 60cm depth, more ideal 90cm. Monitor is also one of the heaviest in the world so I would grab someone's help to set it up, its super heavy and unlike a dumbell you cant pick it up like you are used to / with 1 hand.

I came from a G34WQC and the additional vertical space is what has made all the difference for me, as I code for a living. 3840 x 1600 resolution is almost perfect, hopefully in 2-3 years the 21:9 aspect ratio will be further stretched out for resolution and size, I haven't done the math but hopefully 42"-44" is plausible.

    • Does 10 bit need specific content for it to make a difference? Have the monitor, but haven't tried it out yet. Anything that really makes it shine to compare?

Agree with your points though, fantastic monitor, glad I made the (huge) upgrade from the Xiaomi 34". The increased height really helps too.

      • Is the contrast any better than the Xiaomi? I know VA has some form of ghosting/smearing either way but the contrast is very good on the Xiaomi.

        • That's an IPS vs VA thing. I miss the contrast of the Xiaomi, but it's worse in literally every other way. I'll gladly take the worse contrast vs the smearing, ghosting, input lag etc that the Xiaomi has. Good value at it's price/size, but certainly not a great monitor.

        • In my experience having deep blacks is actually really distracting when not playing games / watching movies. It makes chrome tabs / windows taskbar super high contrast and not easy on the eyes. Even changing themes doesn't help too much. Definitely a VA panel will have a deeper black if that's what you are after.

    • +2

good review thanks, might grab one

    • Yep good summary, have had this monitor for a few weeks after the last deal. Such an awesome monitor, worth every dollar. Can definitely attest to the occasional eye strain due to the monitor being quite bright and also relatively close (my desk isn't that deep). I usually turn on the ambient light sensor to dim the brightness when gaming in the dark.

Also, running this on a RTX2060 Super and the Gsync really helps to counter the lower frame rates when gaming.

      • How far do you sit from the monitor? Is the eye strain still there if you reduce brightness?

        • My eye strain is at 30% brightness even, if I'm using applications with a bright background i.e. word or google.

        • Around 0.5m away, during the day when room is quite bright, it's fine. It's only when it gets dark, you'll need to adjust the brightness down especially if you're doing anything with a white background.

    • Are Netflix/Prime/etc movies or youtube videos (say 1080p) watchable at this resolution or do they come out blurry?

      • +1

Watchable? Without a doubt. If the film is in 21:9 aspect ratio (so many are) the immersion is far better than any 16:9 screen. If you watch The Mandalorian in 4k it will be one of the best monitor tv show experiences you'll ever have.

Any entertainment, 21:9 is the way to go for desktop screens.

        • Where do you stream 4k content from? Prime/Netflix/Binge on desktop don't have 4k right?

My concern is that 1080p would be blurry on a 1600p screen. But access to 4k content might solve that problem I guess.

    • Sooooo, good deal?

  • +2

I picked this monitor up 3 weeks ago and use it for work. build quality is great.
Only thing missing is Dell Display Manager, hasnt enabled this model yet.

DDM works on the very similarly spec'd U3818DW, same resolution and screen size.

Anyone have any good alternatives that are easy to use?

    • +1

I use powertoys. It's on github - check it out.

      • Thanks, have installed it amongst others, but now have to learn how to use the power toys!!!

  • Thanks OP. Just picked one up - sub $1600 is a steal.

  • +3

Bought one a month or so ago around the $1650 mark, couldn't be happer. Going back to my previous 2560 x 1440 monitor feels like a world of difference.

Although if you plot the price drops against time, we're on track for it to be $0 in about 32 months time

  • Would this be overkill with an Alienware 17R4 with a GTX 1080?

    • -3

Yeah, hard pressed to run it even on a 3080

    • +1

I have 1080 - more than enough for all my games. Doom Eternal perfectly runs on this monitor

      • Doom eternal isn't particularly hard to run compared to other triple a games.

    • I can hit 144+ FPS on PUBG on Ultra using a 2080ti. It certainly doesn’t need a 30 series card. Just depends what you’re playing. LoL, CSS, Forknife etc I reckon you won’t have any problems with a 1080.

  • +3

Absolutely amazing monitor, I have it for 3 weeks now and I am sitting around 60sm from the screen. Best monitor I've ever had for both games and work.

  • +1

This or a U4919DW for Officework (Same price) with a Mac M1

    • U4919DW same price as this? Where?

      • +1

wireless1 on eBay with the Afterpay $300 off

    • I have a U4919DW and the USB-C with PD is MIIINT! Is a USB Hub, too! :D … I’m not sure I’d give that up if I needed to add a dock or use both USB-C on the MacBook.

  • +2

Been using it for 3 months, best purchase of the year.

  • +1

I purchased this in the earlier deal and have the flickering problem many users are discussing here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/kmj2by…. Am currently going through Dell's RMA process which has been very painful and drawn out. So not happy with my purchase and something to be aware of when purchasing if you plan on using a HDMI 60Hz source.

    • sounds like some examples have this issue and some don't. i have mine hooked up to my work laptop via DP (getting 85hz), so I have to use HDMI to connect my home PC. My current home PC is a 3-4yr old desktop with integrated (intel) graphics, and it looks like the hdmi port is only v1.4, so am only getting 30hz over that. I am typing on that setup right now. In the week or so i have had the monitor, i have not noticed any flickering over this 30hz hdmi connection.

Thanks Fren! Just used it :D

  • Please PM me if anyone has a coupon code they are not using and would be kind enough to give away. Thanks!

  • Slept on it and then pulled the trigger this morning. Thanks! This will be replacing my 34" LG ultra widescreen which I've had for ~5 years (early days of ultrawides). I am very excited!

  • Nice find, I have this monitor and it's perfect!
I haven't been able to utilize the G Sync Ultimate, due to an old GTX 970, but it runs well on 100hz settings.

    • May I ask if you had any dead pixel or white uniformity issue on your unit?

      • +1

no dead pixels, great pannel. If there was a dead pixel Dell would exchange it right away from my understanding.

  • +4

This monitor is the absolute tits.

  • Got one thanks!

  • +1

Finally took the plunge, after much reading and watching reviews. SW25 and HONEY7 codes work a treat.

  • Mine was shipped from Sydney this afternoon, should be arriving tomorrow morning :)

    • Let us know how it goes, if there's any dead pixel or any other issue out of the box. Been eyeing for a monitor with similar spec (high refresh rate, IPS, ultrawide, curved, at least 1440p, 34 inch or above) and this seems to be the only good option available at this price range but been reluctant to pull the trigger since I'm afraid of getting a unit with a dead pixel (single dead pixel not covered by Dell warranty although it seems they might accept return for a refund after some hassling but ymmv).

Also, when did you order btw? When I spoke to Dell support few days ago they did mention there's no local stock so it will take 11 days to ship from a warehouse in Malaysia.

      • I placed my order Thursday night, original timeline was shipped on the 1st of April and delievered by the 12th of April so either someone cancelled there order or a batch arrived before they expected.

Re Dead pixel most companies won't provide an exchange based on a single dead pixel but generally this is pretty rare. I've only had one occurance and it was a bright pixel over 15 years of using LCDs.

        • Thanks for the info. 1 bright pixel is covered by Dell so they will replace it. Hopefully yours arrives in mint condition.

          • @S2200: Looks like it's stuck in Sydney :(, I won't be around tomorrow to recieve it either.

  • hmmm should I get this over my existing xiaomi ultrawide?

I got my xiaomi for $450 during Xmas and it’s still unopened.

    • +2

If money is no object, this would be a lot better than the Xiamoi

  • Deals end Thursday 11.59 ???

  • Deal expires in just over a day. Tempted to cave in. Tired of looking / waiting for months to get the price I want to pay. The 34 inch would have been ideal for me (and for my pocket) but it's doubtful that would come back in stock given it's discontinued (even if it does, it's going to be very few… the last time it came up on ebay, there were only 7 units).

So, if anyone's got a voucher code they're willing to give away, would very much appreciate a PM :).
(If it's from the same deal, I'm happy to use yours and PM you back my code as 'replacement' once I get mine ..assuming the voucher comes with this deal.)

    • Mine arrived today, no dead or bright pixels working amazing.

      • That's awesome. No luck with getting a code but I guess I'll pull the trigger.

  • tnx OP. bought this Tue night. it was just delivered. Sydney.

    • All went well (no dead or bright pixels) with your unit I'm assuming?

Ordered mine on Thursday evening. Shipped from Sydney today (although they told me it is coming from Malaysia warehouse prior to ordering) and arriving on Monday.

  • Anyone using this with a Macbook? I can't get it over 100hz on my Macbook pro 2017

  • is there any way to delay this deal ? my anz card with $500 giftcard hasnt arrived yet :(
can i order using internet banking and pay maybe tomorrow with card when it arrive?

    welp

    • I'm pretty sure this deal will happen again in a few weeks time. Possibly sooner. That's been the trend lately.
