If you're going to be a troll, at least be an entertaining one.

As an aside, who knew that shills for Big Fish would make OzBargain their new home :D

        • shills for Big Fish

Are these the same fat cats at the big end of town that always pick on the Aussie battlers on struggle street?

          • @1st-Amendment: Of course, in between fair shakes of the ol' sauce bottle

Thanks for your contribution to the early extinction of salmon with your increase demand for wild salmon.

  • what's Mediterranean style? No skin?

Almost every sushi restaurant uses farmed salmon, there's nothing wrong with it. Farmed has more fat, consistent flavour and less risk of parasites. Refusing to eat farmed salmon is so dumb when I guarantee the same people are also happy to eat cheap meat, caged eggs, dairy milk, McDonalds and KFC

  • just went to my local ALDI, just for reference,
Atlantic Salmon Portions 1kg skin on, product of Australia, $23.99

Are you fussed about everything you eat? I'm sure salmon is still the healthiest food you could ever eat in this age.

  • One day only presumably. Shows $28 now.

We Ozbargainers are a hard bunch

    1. Farmed salmon which is intended to take away the overfarming of fish in the wild: Booooo! doesn't taste as good as wild salmon, the fish are over-stressed in small tanks and there is pollution in a documentary.

    2. Wild salmon: Boooo! - contributes to the over-fishing of the oceans with no real sustainability plans - costs a lot more than farmed salmon which is not a bargain.

Alas - the typical Ozbargainer should not eat salmon - Boooo! where are we going to get Omega 3? - Omega 3 supplements are too artificial!!

As an aside, I have been to an Australian barramundi farm and did a tour and was pretty impressed with seeing the ins and outs of the setup and the sustainability focus, including using the wastewater for horticulture etc. (government provides grants to encourage this). They had a complete aquaculture setup with vegetables grown from PVC pipes etc. with the fish wastewater flowing through this.

doesn't taste as good as wild salmon

Once again, it's bad for you. It's not just the taste or flavour profile, farmed fish of any kind are garbage that do harm to your health (as you ingest all of the chemicals, antibiotics and pollutants the fish are subject to) and nutritionally far inferior to their wild-caught cousins.

      • +2

Wild salmon has 3x higher levels of mercury and far more likely to have parasites than farmed salmon.

Do you have a peer reviewed study that concludes eating farmed salmon causes "harm" to health?

"Nutritionally far inferior" is an exaggeration, the amount of protein, fat, omega 3's will be almost identical.

      • and fish farming causes incredible amounts of water pollution!

You cannot buy wild caught Salmon in Australia. End of discussion. Mod close thread.

    • You do realise they have these things called planes, right? Planes with refrigerated storage on them that can fly in wild-caught Alaskan/Canadian Salmon to Australia?

Unless you're talking about wild-caught Australian Salmon, then yes, there's no such thing but there's plenty of imported wild-caught Salmon you can buy here.

  • I never saw so much disinformation in a single post. nonetheless, the real problem in Australia regarding fish farming is the lack of independent enquiries. Some state governments - talking to you Tasmania - are too reliant on the $$$ and jobs the industry promote. without a environmental and independent body to assess impact, and monitor the situation using public and open channels we will always be in the dark.

    • This discussion made me realize that I should be more wary of other discussions too

  • I got free Salmon from the Hello Fresh deal few months ago but I couldn’t get my self to try it. Never have had Salmon.
