Very good price for very decent specs. Will be a nice backup/kids phone.
I've got a kids tablet from Alcatel and for the price point I would not complain at all.

Heaps of stores around me still have stock available for Click&Collect.

      Alcatel 3x 64GB

Clearly it means 192GB of storage.

what was the actual price of this phone before clearance

    • +1

      Looks like $299 initially.

      • +2

but in reality $199 from most retailers

  • Gsmarena says there's NFC: https://www.gsmarena.com/alcatel_3x_(2019)-9842.php

Can anyone confirm/deny it's available please. Thanks

    • I'll second this. Looking for something to replace my Nokia 3, just need NFC, an offline gps that works (looking at you A20), and a camera thats good enough to take photos of text. Games, speed etc..dont care.

      nah

      • so no nfc ? gsmarena got it incorrect?

  • not bad for the kids…

similar specs from aliexpress phones around that price range. pretty good backup

Top review from that JB page

    *Came preinstalled with Malware

I wouldnt reccomend this phone at the moment, It came preinstalled with malware that is a known issue with this release. Sadly mine had several bits of malware making it pretty much useless. JB Store rep told me too bad so sad there is nothing they can do as its opened.*

Guessing it's referring to the default weather app. Good catch

      • You may be right, but there are literally thousands of known vectors on software included on phones sold today- and a similar number of malicious binaries. And we have no idea how many others we don't know about yet, or perhaps, ever. Right from the boot loader up, many cannot be removed even if you rebuild the entire OS as a minimum stack, right from scratch.

Anyhow, pretty sure that the malware and the bad publicity it got, is precisely why it's 'slightly reduced'

Someone decided it was not worth addressing before sale, as they aren't making a profit selling them as it is.

Instead, they discount to sell on to people who don't care, and bin the phone without a thought if it fails. The vendor moves on to the next risky, bug-laden model. No-one gives AF. Literally the only way to fix a rotten supply chain is to enforce vendors be liable for the impacts. The trouble here is that the consumers are not capable of articulating the extent of the impacts, let alone proving them at court.

I guess you can aways try logging everything you do on the phone, and then sue the vendor when you do suffer identity theft. Possibly sue for a fraction of the hassle you'll be dealing with each day, for the rest of your life…

    • Surely, that's unfit for purpose. That sounds like a case for fair trading.

Was it ever fixed with an update?

      • Or unsafe.

There is no general right to privacy in Australia and it would be difficult to determine loss caused as a result of malware.

It appears though there is a huge gap in the Standards as technological products containing known malware is not a breach of "Mandatory standards". However, it should be, especially given the growing understanding of the danger of unsafe cybersecurity practices.

        • I am not a lawyer. This is not legal advice.

If the weather app is subscribing you to premium services without your permission I'm pretty sure you can make a very good case for financial loss, actually. I can't tell you how far you'd get and what it would cost to argue your case though.

          • @syousef: Yeah that's the issue though - and remoteness on the part of the retailer.

Food for thought I suppose though.

    • What's the deal with the alleged malware?

      • Just look up alcatel malware on google

      • My understanding is an included weather app allegedly subscribes you to premium services without permission.

Yeah and but why write something that could get me sued (even if not likely at all) when I am barely familiar with the whole mess?

  • Just ordered one. Hope it isn’t crap!

  • this , or moto g8 lite ?

  • The spill… but not all Alacatel phones are affected…

    https://www.techradar.com/au/news/pre-installed-malware-disc…

    • TLDR:

The app in question, “Weather Forecast – World Accurate Radar”, was found on the company’s Pixi 4 and A3 Max devices.

It doesn't look like this model is affected. The only mention I can find of malware on the 3X is the JBHifi review mentioned above.

Thanks OP, just bought one for my youngest - a good starter phone.

  • anyone can confirm this is 2019 or 2020 model ?

edit: nvm, found this is 2019 model

  • Cannot apply the discount code. Seem to be "In Store Only" for me?

  • link is dead

  • It's actually a decent phone!
