[PC, Steam, Pre Order] Total War: Rome Remastered $22.49 for Owners of Rome: Total War (Was $44.99) @ Steam

350

A remaster of one of the best PC games ever made.

It releases on April 30th so there'll be time to check reviews before buying with the deal.

The studio doing the remaster has a positive reputation among fans for how they've handled a recent port of the same game to other platforms.

I bought this 15 years ago and now i have to PAY for a remaster!? Despicable.

I'm not sure if this is maybe a joke, but..

Remasters are usually a new paid product. At least they have been for Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape, Age of Empires, movie special editions, etc.

Looking at the quality of this, it definitely seems worth it for any fans who want an upgrade (and the original is still available otherwise), and is work which wouldn't have happened for free.

        Definitely a joke mate :P
I do remember buying the original game on disc from EB games many many years ago (and then on steam after that) and i do not in anyway feel entitled to a free upgrade 15 years later - the half price they are offering is already pretty generous!

I support the idea that existing owners should get a discount, but the asking price of $45 for an HD texture pack on a 20 year old game is a little bit steep.

There's quite a few other enhancements from what I can tell, but yeah waiting until release might be the safe option. The price will probably drop after a few months.

Here’s hoping the incendiary pigs get a complete HD remaster. Worth the $45 alone.

    • I use a mod that, among many other things, removes those lol

You’re dishonouring the memory of all those thousands of war pigs who gave their lives in the heat of battle!

        • +1

          Haha 'heat'. Noice.

  • As long as they fix the stupid mechanic where rebels appear out of the blue in a hug army despite your province being super happy. Ruined the game. It would pop up in force when you'd almost taken everything over just to keep you from finishing.

I played Shogun and Medieval to bits - both of them. I'm talking thousands upon thousands of hours in both of them. But Rome never grabbed me like the first too. It wasn't until Warhammer 1 and 2 that I got back into Total War. Might still check out this remaster, but I'm a bit wary of remasters after the Warcraft III Reforged debacle. 4K Command & Conquer though is great - and its free and Xbox Game Pass for PC now as of about a week or two ago. I'm playing through a Nod campaign now and loving experiencing dormant memories from 25 years ago again.

I the original RTW is the height of the series along with Shogun 2 imo. I sank hundreds of hours into RTW back in the day and still haven't found many turn-based RTS games that gave me that same grand sense of conquest and triumph that RTW did.

Compared to the original Shogun/Medieval, it's a lot more epic with much larger scale battles and the campaign offers way more strategic possibilities and replayability.

If I were to rank the series: (1) Original Rome; (2) Shogun II; (3) Medieval. Couldn't really get into the second Rome game.

  • Great game back in the day. Zero incentive to buy this half arsed remaster. I'm sure there are some that can justify it somehow…

From watching the vids I'm pretty impressed with how extensive it is, with every video finding some new feature they added (the ones I posted above missed something I found later, about agents getting an auto-generated list of nearby actions they could perform with how many turns it would take, for really easy deployment). There's only a few things I don't like and they seem optional.

Definitely one for true enthusiasts of the game. I know some people put 1000 hours into it and happy to out in more. This game is for them!
