Sorry, I don't find it cheap at all !

These are shuckable and will likely have a SanDis OEM M.2 drive inside. Relevant discussion

  • This series is pricy!

  • nice work

  • Not bad, I heard it’s not so great in the enclosure but good if you want to shuck it for the internal m.2 drive
The Samsung T5 2TB was $200 recently which is much better for an external SSD but if you shucked it you got an mSATA drive

  • After my previous WD drive died with the dreaded click of death, no more WD for me.

Does anyone know if this series is resilient to it?

    • +13

It's an SSD, so it's not going to click…

    • +9

I can guarantee 100% you won’t get the dreaded click of death from this one!

    • Thanks guys :( Still need to take it to a recovery center.

      • +5

You shouldn’t ever store anything important on a single physical media. Put important stuff on two things or store it in cloud.

        • if you trust the privacy of MS, Google, Apple, etc.

          • +1

@lostn: If it's purely for backup, one could use backup software like Arq that encrypts your data before storing it on the cloud.

      • same thing happened to me. WD drive. I lost 3 years of photos. WD wanted $1500 to 'recover' at their centre. I said no.

If this is anything like the 500GB model the write speeds are awful, 150MB/s.

    • I presume the same, can’t just miraculously be so much better being the same type

    • Still better than the one I got from Amazon when they cancelled my order. I got a $10 credit for my troubles.

      • they canceled mine too but I didn't get the $10.

        • I had to chat with them for that to happen.

First they said "It's not available anymore."
So I sent the URL that showed it available.
Then they said, "Supply and demand, third party seller."
I then linked them to Amazon AU having it in stock and selling it as well.
I then said, "What's the point of taking the order if you're not going to fill it?"
He then said he would send to the proper department and offered me $10 piss off money.

          • @Daabido: that's neat. But they used to automatically offer some credit without you haggling for it. Yes, even if they are unable to locate stock anymore.

          • @Daabido: Real $10 or voucher of $10 value that you have to spend on them?

    • 150? Mine never goes above 75MB/s on average. Garbage SSD drive

      • that's worse than my mechanical HDDs.

        • +1

          Yep my mechanical gets 111MB/s

    • I found the write speeds on my 500GB model were as low as 85MB/s lol

build-in cable, I don't recommend. cable easy broken, more chance lost all data,

    • +1

Losing all data because of a broken cable sounds a bit like exaggeration. You can open the enclosure and put the drive into another one.

      • +1

assuming it's not soldered in. Sometimes it is. You'd best check.

        • It isn't, see Clear's comment above about it being shuckable

    • picked up my $50 officeworks one today, and thought the same thing about this cable - it looks like a big point of weakness.

    • +3

That's not true. It's a USB-C to USB-A cable so you could crack open the case and stick a new one in. Or alternatively take the M.2 SSD out.

  • I have been eyeing this one, its a good price for a T7 competitor.

  • My 500 GB wd passport ssd keeps disconnecting, anyone know a fix?

    • Not sure about yours but I had the same problem. The issue goes away once I put it high enough beyond my 2 yo’s reach.

      • No I just got mine too.

        • Check if the are signs of oxidation on the usb connector and pins.

Otherwise it could be your USB port too lose.

    • is it plugged into a fast enough port? Is it being shared in a hub with other devices?

      • I plugged into the front port of my tower.

        • Try the ports behind the tower. Specifically look for blue coloured ports or ports with word SS and power sign.

  • How does an NVMe drive only reach 400 MBps?

    • +1

It's not an NVMe drive, nowhere does it state that :) It's a SATA SSD in an enclosure

      • Ah yes, you're right. M.2 format but only SATA.

  • I bought a 500GB version of the exact same thing for $49!! from Office Works. It's fantastic,
