Great price for a branded head unit.

Definitely good price. Branded is the key. Jvc went bust many years ago. Licensed out their brand name to no name Chinese companies

      • +1

Are you sure about them going bust and the name just being used by Chinese companies? From google it looks like they were bought by Kenwood and still Japanese owned, but they just don’t manufacture in Japan anymore, they do in Thailand and Europe and maybe China as well I guess, but seems slightly different to what you described. More like they offshored or perhaps outsourced some manufacturing but didn’t go bust and are still a Japanese company.

        • Definitely the case with their TVs and hi-fi systems

        • +1

My mistake. Looks like they shut down tv and video camera arms and licensed those out. Then merged with Kenwood and 4 other companies. As they say ymmv

      • That makes sense to me now i would certainly never buy a JVC unit again no matter the price…
Always had Pioneer, Sony units in the past…

        • -7

Yeah, China is bad, right? Except most high end electronics are produced in China, with some Chinese brands leading the world in design too. The word is "snob".

          • @mrau: Who cares where’s it’s made mate.
Some brands have better manufacturing standards than others, you may pay more for this, still doesn’t mean your exempt from failure but the chances are lower.

        • just replaced my 8 year old JVC single DIN with a double DIN Kenwood Android Auto wireless unit. Zero problems from the JVC in that time. would recommend.

          • @nismoau: For the record, JVC just about everything is Chinese, except the car audio division which was as mentioned above absorbed by kenwood. They are their slightly cheaper line but to be honest they are still fine. They should absolutely not be compared to the. The stuff in e.g big w

  • thanks for that been looking for something just like this for a while now

Can anyone recommend a good installer? Sydney nsw.

    • Need this as well. SCA does the installs for $188 including steering wheel controls as another option.

    • +4

Not difficult to install yourself if you have some simple tools. Buy the wiring hardness adapter for your car to make it plug & play wiring. Look up the model of you car on youtube + "car audio installation" and someone's probably already done a video for you to follow.

    • Heard thanq is pretty good at doing this stuff.

  • +1

Bought 2 of these three days ago from SCA as a Club Plus member @ $429 dollars each. Time to see if they honour the price promise https://i.postimg.cc/kgVY5Bmn/Price-Promise.png

They definitely will. You'll have a bunch of credit to spend shortly.

      • Thanks.

Available to spend for a limited time

Great unit for the price. Handy tip, JVC/Kenwood effectively the same company, you can use Kenwood stereo harness adapters if you can't find a JVC one. You can also connect to ground the parking cable… just saying.

    • +6

How do you drive anywhere with the cable connected to the ground?

      • +4

Usually head units that play video have a wire to connect to the handbrake to detect if the car is parked or not.
If you just ground out that wire, the head unit will remain unlocked, so you can play video or do whatever else you want with the head unit while driving.

        Drive safe :)

        • But I thought when connected to Android Auto/iPhone Car Play you won't have options to play videos anyway?

I purchased one of these in Feb from this deal when they were $399
Quite happy with it so far, switched from a Kenwood DDX model to get the Android Auto, so I already had a steering wheel controller, DAB antenna, mic and camera already wired in etc.

Thoughts on using it for 6 weeks:

    What I like about it:
Boots up a bit faster than the old one
Shows reversing camera faster and does not have a safety nag screen blocking out the camera image like the Kenwood did.
Android Auto interface, apps, navigation works well with my S20 FE
Capacitive touchscreen is bright and responsive
Reversing image is clear and bright, clearer than I had with the Kenwood.

    What could be better:
There still is a nag screen when you power it on, but at least it goes away on its own.
If the phone is connected when the car is started I would prefer if Android Auto loaded on its own, instead of having to touch the AA icon every time.
Sometimes not all android auto apps are available - I am looking at you, Spotify
The radio is bare bones - they do not include a DAB antenna.
Digital radio reception is fairly weak. Drops out in outer Sydney suburbs.
Reversing camera has a flicker that is picking up from the indicator function. I think the original install is powering the camera from the reverse light circuit, but somehow noise gets generated by the indicator and makes it through to the camera signal.
FM tuning is fiddly and difficult to get the stations you want, e.g. I could not see how I could enter an exact FM frequency.
I miss having a volume dial
Controls on the left side of the touch panel are awkward to get to and not intuitive, and make it a little more difficult. With touch panels, it would be nice to have the ability to switch them onto the right side for markets like ours.
Android Auto day/night screen in maps toggles with the headlights being on or not, this usually works the way you want, but a few days it has worked the wrong way, i.e. blinding white maps at night time - this only happened to me once, but it was quite annoying.
Wireless Android Auto would be nice.

I want to look at a better antenna solution than the Kenwood adhesive DAB antenna on my windscreen - I had a similar problem with the Kenwood DDX but it seemed to be related to noise from the USB cable powering my dashcam (this does not seem to cause the same problem with the JVC - it is just weak all the time).

Has anyone else found a good DAB antenna solution?

Solid review mate, makes me want to buy it.

And I would if I wasn't selling my car.

    • +2

Great review. Thanks for the effort.

    • +1

Will be doing the same switch soon from my Kenwood DDx5. Can I use the existing harness? Cheers!

      • +1

I had a DDX5 also, but unfortunately the harness was different to the one for the JVC, with a different pin pattern in the back of the radio.
You will probably also need to purchase an ISO harness suitable for your car - I got one for my car from SCA, it was about $18 I think.

  • How would I know if it fits my Car…..

    • Do you have a double din slot?

      • I tried to find the info could not get it mine is toyota Kluuger GX 2019

  • Anyone have any thoughts on how this JVC compares to this Kenwood DMX5020S for $419 which also seems like a decent deal? I will require SWC so I believe I would need an adapter for the JVC which ends up making the price difference minimal for me. Am I better off just going with the Kenwood?

    • It looks like the Kenwood one does not have the DAB digital radio.
I thought you would need to get a steering wheel control adapter for either of them.

  • Have been eyeing a dash mounted android auto system for years but having to connect with a wire kills it for me. FML 😀

  • Got it for $220 I'm happy.

    10% gift card + 7% cashback.

    :)

    • +1

How does that math work? $299 -10% - 7% ≠ $220. Where did the other $30 or so come from?

      • My bad I bought is for like 230ish. I used the $10 credit from signing up

  • Looks like its sold out! no stock at any of my locals

  • Don't forget the 7.00% Cashback from Shopback which makes the price $279

    Close but no cigar.

    GST stuffs up your maths.

  • No stock in Melbourne, specially in south east , no delivery either

  • Could anyone please confirm if this needs the USB cable connected in order to use Android Auto? Are there options for a 'wireless' Android Auto with any of the headunits?

    • +3

This head unit needs USB to be connected to the phone for Android Auto to become available.

      • Deal breaker.

        • +3

don't think you'll find any wireless android auto units for $300… maybe at twice the price?

  • Missed out. No stock in WA.

  • Is the ShopBack cashback 1.5% or 7%? I see just 1.5%

  • no stock should be marked expired?

  • -1

    This deal still available?

  • +1

Wow…Got it for $369 in the previous deal. I have installed it and its awesome so far! Mainly use car play for nav and also appreciate the grid lines it adds for the reverse camera.
