4tb external hard drive for $99. Not overly cheap but is on sale compared to normal price. Easily shuckable, can someone confirm in comments if drive is SMR. Same price at officeworks

Even at $72 I did not purchase it after reading numerous terrible reviews.

what were the main complaints? Speed / noise?

They're slow. Very slow. Beyond that, rock solid and cheap archive storage. Have half a dozen on 24/7 for years with no issues.

      • They fail and the data is gone. However, they will send you a new one ahahahahh.

    SMR drive.

Can confirm if you're writing large files or filling it up in one go, write speed is atrocious!

Read speeds are good. So if you're writing once and then reading only, it's fine. In reality, your usage will likely vary so sometimes you'll be frustrated, ok at other times :).

My $0.02, I'd rather find a used CMR drive than buy this.
Particularly seeing it's not really very good value at that price either.

I believe this is usual price. I've seen this before multiple times in Officeworks, JB hifi and in other places which i can't remember.

This is how much these were going for in 2019. The price hadn't budged since. It must be the stock shortage of certain computer items.

And yeah it has the SMR hard drive ST4000DM001 3.5" HDD model inside of the enclosure which can be shucked. I shucked a few of them already. It is only a 5900 rpm HDD so it's probably no good for any thing other than storage. Than again that's all an SMR HDD is good for.

    • Could it stream 4k movies to Kodi for example? If it's plugged into a MiBox?

      • +1

Yeah it could. It's what these drives are good for. Data which only needs to be stored once and read many times such as 1080p and 4K movies.

        • Cool, I just got one from officeworks :)

          Thanks 👍

No, it's because they're charging what the market can bear. It has nothing to do with supply or production cost. If it had anything to do with those the price would vary over time.

  • Apparently only actually 3.6TB, not 4TB?

Also, looking to store data for long periods of time on these, and then retrieve data intermittently. Will this drive be ok for that?

    Thanks

  • Do these have that custom connector or sata?
