Hope they can put a 2k display on it, 1080p is a waste for 3080

    • +3

It's a 360Hz FHD screen so at least it will be buttery smooth.
Looks like the only "upgrade" is to a 60Hz UHD screen for a whopping additional $586.
      Considering it's a 17", there should be a QHD option with a 144Hz or 165Hz refresh rate

    • +4

Your wish is granted. It has a 2k screen.

      2k is 1920x1080 AKA 1080p.
QHD is 2560x1440 AKA 1440p (also rarely 2.5k).
      4k is 3840x2160p.

Blame television companies for this mess.

I didn't downvote you but I'd imagine this AW is marketed at a different crowd. This has a 360hz 1080p screen, looking at the first option you've suggested its 165hz 1440p.

I realise most people probably would prefer the 1440p but this AW is for a certain type of person. I personally have a desktop with a 3900X and 2080TI paired with a 240hz 1080p monitor. If I was in the market for a gaming laptop (I'm not), I'd be going for the AW.

        • 360hz iz a gimmick , my 1080 laptop does 300hz in the same games the 3080 could.
To enjoy butter-smooth gameplay, anything above 120hz does it.
QHD should be the new quality standard.
Look at the comment above yours

          17" , qhd 165 , ryzen 5900 , rtx3080 max-p (140w atleast , similar to alienware) , same storage, 32gb ram , $4,100 before any "sale"

@The Milk Man: Oh I see we aren't having reasonable conversations, I missed that memo.

            • -1

              @jeppetto367: -_-
I believe in high refresh rate, the 3080 can't push past 120 on current AAA Games, I said I can reach 300hz on my current laptop.

Did I offend you? if so how?

        • +1

For games where 360Hz might matter a 3080 is not needed.
The OP deal is a specification mess.
Kundi is offering resolvable commentary and alternatives, which as per usual us downvoted by the instant upvote/downvote gratification numbskulls of Oz Bargain.

      • You are paying for the Alienware brand…
MSi and ASUS would be better value.

Alienware would be OK when they are 50%-60% off.

"Backup your stupid downvotes with actual comments?"

I wish Neil would turn this requirement on..this site is ruined by f-wits who can neg but not back themselves up.

We have to comment to neg a deal, we should have to comment to neg a comment.

        • +2

Half the freaking time downvotes are like the flu.
People be like, monkey see monkey do.
Other people voted that! They must be right!!

          • +4

            @The Milk Man: Yeah..ozbsheeps.

It's a lol when a product gets hammered with negs then two weeks later the same deal gets tons of upvotes. It's the sheep!

Posture correctors and bigmantyrone are examples that come to mind.

        • +1

Anonymous negs are the bane of this site.
Some comments deserve negs, but all too often you'll find quality comments, commentary and genuine questions neg'd.
It also encourages a sheeple attitude, and discourages critical thought.

Nothing good, and plenty of bad comes of the ability to neg anonymously.
Brings out the worst of everyone behind a keyboard.

    • Careful when buying RTX30-series laptops, the performance can be crippled by low tdp variants of the GPU.
Not saying any of the one you listed have the low tdp GPUs but research it before buying

      • Scar lineup is up to 140
        Infinity 17 I linked above is 140

Only one I'd avoid is Aorus which I've linked, that reaches 110 at most :(

        • I think the Alienware 17 model runs the RTX card at Max TPD according to Mash IT reviews he does pretty in-depth one and also CPU can be undervolted on these with Thermal limit you can set in Bios very useful if you don’t want system to hit 100 degrees constant

  • +4

But seriously, it should come with a 144Hz 1440p screen. That would make it much more attractive option.

    • 'Desktop Replacement' used to be the term for these beasts.

    • It's not that big/heavy for a 17". The big boy is the Area 51M

  • +1

Don't forget, the laptop 3080 gpu is not even the same chip as the desktop 3080 and even the full powered version is significantly less powerful, more similar to a 3060ti.

  • Would this be good for photography?

  • This deal is not expired.

    • It is, there was 15% off sale, it's back to full price.
Coupon code still works to take 7% off

      • +2

        Yes, it’s expired.

        My mistake.

  • High pitch fan noise issues very common since the R3s. Think twice about whether you can tolerate that long term before keeping it after the free return period.
