Yumbo Burger $3 @ Hungry Jack's

613

Let's go back to the 1970s….

As reported -

The fan favourite Australian burger first realised in the 1970s will be making a return to coincide with Hungry Jack’s 50th anniversary.

What’s a Yumbo you might ask? Well, if you were born after 1990 you might struggle: the burger was a Hungry Jack’s staple during the 1970s and 1980s, before being discontinued in 1991.

Consisting of five slices of hot ham and two slices of melted cheese on a sesame bun, the Yumbo will again be available across Australian Hungry Jack’s stores from next Tuesday for $3.

the word "Yumbo" has the same pronunciation as the word "Pu ssy" in cantonese.
So let say if my friend asks me, let go eat some yumbo? does he really mean he wants some burgers or something else?

    • I like the name.
Brb, gonna change my username to a cat…

    5 slices of sodium nitrite

  • $3 looks like what it’s worth. Why is this a bargain?

    • Same reason all the other full price "bargains" are allowed.

The Yumbo was brilliant, its the burger that made me love hungry jacks - late 70's West Aust.

  • Australia needs Arby's

Well, if you were born after 1990 you might struggle: the burger was a Hungry Jack’s staple during the 1970s and 1980s

I was born well before '90 and I don't recall these at all. Nor do I recall Hungry Jacks in Australia until the mid 80s. Did it open somewhere other than NSW first? When I was a kid in the 70s it was either Maccas, Kentucky or Pizza Hut. Don't recall HJ until around the mid 80s.

    • We definitely had them in WA, and copied in school canteens!

      • Apparently first store was in Perth in '71. TIL. Didn't come to NSW until '81 and VIC '86

      • I have zero recollection of it, despite going to Hungry Jacks and even having a birthday there in the 80s.

    • I arrived in Australia (Adelaide) in 1974 and our first meal in our new country was Hungry Jacks. And Yumbos were good.

    • HJ didn't open in Melbourne till late 80's, not sure about Sydney, been in SA & WA forever

  • riiiiiiight

How is rrp new menu in a restaraunt a deal?

So anytime new menu in restaraunt, new movie at cinema, new shop opening is a deal?

    • Yep and don't forget all pre orders are deals

    • +2

if it's a good price then yeah sure

      • 5 slices of ham and 2 slices of cheese on a bun isn't a good price for $3 sorry.

That's exactly what I would have at home for much less. Unless your one that likes to eat pre-made sandwiches then I guess this is good.

As someone from WA who was born in the same year as HJs I can honestly say that, while it is not a great burger, it is the taste of my childhood. This was my original go-to burger as a kid.

  • If this is true & authentic to the original it will be amazing!!!
Mind you it could be like a lot of fond memories I have in my childhood - no where near as good as I remember (looking at you modern Wagon Wheels….).
Could we see a Apple-style queue of GenX's outside HJs if they do a midnight launch?

  • hamburger.

Who's ready for an incredible luncheon?!

  • I think it's best consigned to the dustbin of history.

  • I like lot Hungry Jacks stuff. It’s filling cheap and fairly tasty. Don’t know how good it is for you.

One those sometimes foods. Like once month at the most.

But that burger looks disgusting. They retired it decades ago. Their must have been reason.

    Looks more like “Yucko” burger

  • Is phone fine?

    • Phone is fine, if you put it between the hams.

      • The hams are the power that be

Hungry Jacks used to make this swiss cheese mushroom burger years ago (like 30 years ago) and it was amazing. I wish they would bring that back.

All that’s missing is the polystyrene packaging. Yumm!

  • +1

Yumbo's were great, especially trying to scrape all the melted cheese of the polystyrene, good times!

  • I could handle this being chucked into a sandwich press at the end for a couple of minutes.

  • +1

Finally!! I have been hoping that they would bring this back!! Yum!!

  • Anyone find the details on the actual ham yet, is it turkey ham or real ham

    • Real turkey ham

  • That is the coolest name for a burger

  • Great move HJs

  • Had one of these today. The cheese was not melted at all. The 'burger' was cold.

    0/10

  • I tried it and it was good. I didn't expect much over a ham and cheese sandwich but it was good.

  • Just bought this tonight to try it.

It's a shitty ham and cheese sambo. No melted cheese. Not hot. I'm angry I spent $3 on this crap.
