  • Jetstar is feeling very lonely right about now! Bring on the competition :)

    • i love jetstar price beat and i wish jetstar flying to kl as well, so i can do price beat with them hahahha

  • Does anyone know why flights from Melbourne offer more destinations than Sydney, i.e to China, Hong Kong, Macau, Soul, Taipei etc?

    • The Melbourne flight leaves earlier than the Sydney flight. So arrives in KUL earlier with more time to connect with flights to other destinations.

I think the flights depart MEL at 12:45am and 9:35am on alternating days.

Someone should ask the flight attendant to ask over the PA
"Who here is from OzBargain? Can you please raise your hand"

  • Awesome deal! Syd->KL->Sub return $450 peak season!!!

  • +1

paid by Paypal (credit card fund) & got better rate. The website quote AU$308.xx, I paid only AU$290.32. SWEET!!

    • +1

I noticed this for my booking as well (a lower price when paying by PayPal), however, I found that in my case, it was because selected seats were not applied even though I went throught the process of selecting them. You might want to review your booking to make sure that everything did get applied. In my case, I had to update the booking with the prebooked seats and make an additional payment for the additional cost of prebooking seats.

      • damn, i think that happened to me! good spot.

      • Argh… thanks for replying with warning. Now I understand why it's cheaper, my prepaid seat was removed by system. Have bought my seat this morning. Thanks!!!

    • This happened to me too, how do i go back and add the seats again? Bloody hell, took me 5 minutes to finish organising the seats, have to do it again…

edit: had to sign up and edit the booking

      • Happened to me too, thankfully I'd already signed up before booking the flights, so it took me directly to the 'manage booking' page. They really should fix their system.. ._.

      • supaboi, glad you managed to fix yours.

In case anyone else had this problem: There is a "manage my booking" link on the left hand menu (when logged in) where will see your bookings listed. The 'modify' link on the booking row will take you to pages where you are able to add the extras.

  • +++ from me. Got a trip for 2 for $538 including some food on the plane and one 20kg luggage alowance. Cheap holiday for a few days. Never been, so thanks for the fabulous opportunity to visit Malaysia.

      Thanks for this!

  • For anyone interested, the cost of an infant is $45 (SYD > KL) and $40 (KL > SYD) when booking one way flights (makes it pricey when you have twins!!!!) None the less.. All booked for a two week holiday in September!

  • oh mans, thank you so much OP!!!!!!! Booked my 2 week holiday last night!!! 99 one way, 129 return! awesome! Cheaper than flying to freaking melbourne for me. amazing. gawd i love AA

  • i booked tune hotel downtown for $22 a night- reduced from $45 on air asia website.

  • anybody knows what will happen if you dont select a seat and you are travelling with a child?

    • I doubt you'd be given priority with a child. In the early days of flying AirAsia without the option of picking seats, it was pretty much like catching a bus - you take whatever seats that are not yet occupied and there is no assistance from the hostesses.

I'd recommend you pay for the preselected seats.

    • Yup,

If you payed the $45, the child is on your lap.
If you booked a child seat, its the same as an adult seat, they are simply allocated sequentially. This means you COULD be split across an isle, split between different cabins or have people sitting between you.

Trick is, do an online checkin now, this will give you your seats. If its no good, look at the seats beside one of your allocated seats, if it's free, then pay the seat fee for the other person to move to that free seat.
      OR
Wait until your on the plane and ask if the person sitting next you you would swap so your family can sit together. Note, i've never had any luck trying to swap seats around at the checking desk, but they always tell me if a person sitting next to me is travelling alone and are likely to swap.

PS - I travel with my 2 year old on AirAsiaX 4 times or more a year.

      • Thanks for the advise especially about online checkin for seating. I missed the prebook part. Although its not "critical" as its only an 8hr flight, and after SYD -LAX flights its going to be easy…

    • +1

I travelled in April last year to KL with my 6 and 10 year old. I decided I was not going to pay for the privilege of sitting next to them so I choose a seat for my husband (aisle seat as he is tall) and left it up to air asia to place myself and the kids.I got placed next to my husband and the kids were 2 rows and an aisle away with a person in between them. it was a great flight for me but the guy in between the kids might not agree.

  • Could someone familiar with Kuala Lumpur suggest a 2 day weekend itinerary of things to do and see in Kuala Lumpur please. Any day trips suggestion outside of KL is welcome too.

    • Easy to get to:
Petronas Towers - you can visit the sky bridge in between these impressive towers and have a birds eye view of KL, but I'm not sure how hard it is to get tickets for the sky bridge these days. There is a limit of number of visitors allowed per session per day, so do some research on the internet to avoid disappointment. At the base of the towers is a very nice shopping centre called Suria KLCC. Nice shops, and nice restaurants on the restaurant floor (cheap by Aussie standards). There are no shortage of shopping malls and there are museums if you want to stay in air conditioning.

[EDIT] Harder to get to, but worth the visit:
Putrajaya - administrative city with impressive buildings, beautiful mosque, man-made lakes.

If you can handle the heat, there are plenty of outdoor things you can do too. Parks, outdoor shopping streets etc.
      http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Asia/Malaysia/Wilayah_P…

      • I picked up my 1pm tickets at around 8am last time I went to Petrona towers.

      • +1

Go up the KL tower, much higher and far better 360 degree views than the Petronas towers bridge and you don't have to line up, spend half the morning waiting to go on the lift etc.

KLCC has relatively expensive shops, go to Sungei Wang for cheaper, general shopping or Low Yat (they are virtually next to each other) for technology type shopping.

Go to Petaling St (China Town) for the 'copy' goods, bargaining is to go here and you will still pay more than a local for stuff, copy watches for instance can be had for AU$5 at the suburbian Pasar Malams. Also, eat the food around here, don't bother with those air cond shopping centre food halls where the food is more expensive (but still cheaper than oz) than the street and less flavoursome.

Some one mentioned Jalan Alor for food, great spot to try the local hawker foods. Just around the corner from Jalan Alor along Changkai Bukit Bintang, there's a 'bar strip' if you want to see the local nightlife without venturing to the wild nightclubs.

Putrajaya is nice, if you wanted to see it, take a taxi to/from the airport and get them to drive you thru it on the way to the city.

Havn't seen it mentioned anywhere here, but if you want to save $$'s, get the Skybus from KLCC to KL Central (about 50 min ride), then catch the monorail to a station close to your hotel although after a long flight and the humid heat you may just want to take a taxi from KL Central to your hotel.

You can buy Skybus tickets on the AA website or you can just get on the bus and buy tickets if you already have RM. The latter is better as there are 2 bus companies, Sykbus/Aerobus operating so you can get on either. Downside is, you have to buy RM in OZ or at the LCCT and don't get a good rate.

The bus is right across the other side of the L shaped terminal so a longish walk. At KL Central, go up the escalator and you can get a taxi from there - use CC for taxi if no RM or go inside and find money exchanger.

        • Nice summary and info again. Any ideas on hotels — nothing fancy but clean quiet safe central/close to transport?

        • Hi ozpete,

I stay with family when there so don't have a great idea on hotels. However, staying around the Jalan Bukit Bintang area will put you close to all the shopping areas and a monorail station.

Traders is very popular with tourists and nice (had family from oz stay there), it's close to the Petronas Towers but a little bit of a walk to the monorail.

Tune Hotels (Air Asia) have a cheap place but it's a bit ouf of the city centre, close to a monorail and only 3 stops from Bukit Bintang station. If you stay here, try the Pan Mee at Kin Kin restaurant on Lorong Tunku Abudul Rahman 2 and use the spicy condiment on the table - this place is famous with locals from all around KL.

        • Thank you will look into those suggestions.

    • genting ?

      • not for 2 days - too short a time

I am not sure I would queue for tickets either given that it would eat into other things.

      • dont go to genting, its so dirty. It is just like a market place.

        • if anyone decides to go to genting, for the love of god pay the express pass fee for the cable car, We didnt know about this until we had to wait 2 hours in queue. The cost was like $3 au.

    • For an great view of the Petronas Towers, you can either stay at the Traders Hotel and book a Tower View room, or pay a visit to the Sky Bar at the Traders Hotel.

Theres no shortage of things to do in KL, here are some suggestions:

      • Eat at Jalan Alor in Bukit Bintang
      • Shopping in Bukit Bintang
      • Ride the rollercoaster inside Berjaya Times Squares' indoor amusement park (not to mention 10 levels of shops)
      • Petaling Jaya
      • Ride the Hop on Hop Off bus
      1. u gotta see teh bat cave and monkeys and massive staircase thing
      2. worlds largest indoor rollercoaster is at one of the Mega Malls
      3. the monorail is your friend!!!!
      • bat cave? u mean batu caves?

        • thats exactly what i mean! yey!

  • promo finished??

  • awesome deal, booked my flight for my holiday late july to august 2012 yesterday to KL (I am going to Jakarta but I dont mind to go to KL first then get another cheap airasia flight to Jakarta from there - who knows they might have another south east asia sale in the future before july 2012 =p). Spent some additional dollars for inflight food and some additional baggage allowance, booked separate flight to save on the return leg from KL.
Total around $460 for 2 people. Very Very Happy.

  • $99 promo is not showing anymore :(

    • I think I remember reading somewhere that it was a "one day flash sale".

      • i saw sale til 22 jan?

        • Yeah same here, this sucks :( I think I missed out

        • Yes the AA website was originally showing

          Booking Period : 17 January 2012 - 22 January 2012
          Travel Period : 1 April 2012 - 30 June 2012

But there were plenty of sale fares July-October even though the travel period was advertised as April-June. So the original advertisement was incorrect.

    • No sale fares left except all the way in October and later now.

    • yeah they have up the prices :(

  • -1

They seem to have changed prices and travel period:

    Booking Period : 17 January 2012 - 22 January 2012
    Travel Period : 1 April 2012 - 30 June 2012

    http://www.airasia.com/my/en/promotion/rx1430406.page?mb

    • And I can't find any dates with that cheap anymore. Booooo!

  • Promo fares are now $149.

AirAsia have updated the booking conditions

    Booking Period : 19 January 2012 - 22 January 2012
    Travel Period : 1 April 2012 - 27 October 2012

So they have officially extended the Travel Period until end of October (even though there were plenty of $99 fares Jul onwards on Day 1).

Just had a look this morning. There are no $149 fares left in April, May or June. However they are still showing up in July, Aug, Sep and Oct.

    • They have up the prices and none $99 fares anymore.

  • arrghh so i cant change the date (and still pay $99) ??? i bought 2 but thinking to extend my trip :(

    • +2

The change fee for rebooking a fare to another date is $50. So you will lose half the value of the ticket by doing this. However you might want to try request a refund of the airport taxes. Section 4.3 of the terms of conditions of carriage state:

We shall refund airport tax only. Airport tax is only refundable if requested in writing within 6 months of the travel date and the refund is subject to a refund processing fee, where applicable.

Since the $99 fare breakdown was $7 airfare + $92 taxes and charges you might be able to get most of it back. You'd only forfiet the $7 fare component (and pay an additional $6 refund processing fee).

      Try using this form
      http://www.airasia.com/au/en/faqdetailsform.page
Select Case category as 'Refund' and Type as 'Airport Tax'.

Good luck though, I've never done it.

  • Melb People.

Tiger Airways have a sale on at the moment til 25th of Jan. Dates of flying from May - August 2012.

    Each way costs $34.97.

I have heard bad rep from Tiger (delayed/cancelled flights) therefore I called up Jetstar to price guarantee. Got my tickets for $31.47 each.

There are rules with price guarantee so please check them out before calling.

    • what destinations?

      • +2

i think melb syd or syd melb he was talking about

        • -1

not sure what is on his mind

        • haha maybe he wanted to help people from melb to go to sydney to catch this deal (to MY.)

        • Sorry Melb - Syd return.

This obviously posted in the Air asia thread from Sydney.

  • Does anyone know if i wanted to go elsewhere from KL rather than just the places you can fly to from sydney (via air asia), if i make a separate booking from KL to another country through Air Asia. Am i able to still get the baggage to carry over from sydney all the way to my final destination? Or does it all have to be on one booking?

    • as far as i am aware: needs to be in one booking. aka connecting

    • +2

Air Asia are a point carrier, ie sydney to KL is one journey and thats the end of it. If you book say KL to Phuket after, thats unrelated to the syd/kl flight.

This is important to know -

      1. you will have to pick up your luggage on arrval in kl and go thru customs then check in for the kl/phuket flight then go back th ru customs.

      2. you need to allow 2 hours at the very minimum between flights.

      3. if you miss the check in for your second flight , AA are under no obligation to re book you on a later flight, even if your first flight was delayed causing you to miss the second flight.
