  • Can you ship to Australia?
I bought two last time around, but when I tried to buy another, it wouldn't let me ship to an Australian address..

    • +2

Yes, just verified that this particular product ships to Australia — you just need to make sure you buy from the listing that says "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com", since most third-party sellers on Amazon won't ship to Australia.

  • Is the US version multi-voltage?

  • +2

the power adaptor supplied with the unit will work with 100v-240v (50/60hz)…

  • unfortunately this does not have an ad skip ff function ie 15~30 sec forward with one button. Only simple 2x 4x 6x 8x fastforward which is painful for ad skipping in recorded tv shows . (very freeview like)
    Otherwise a perfect media player.

    • +2

This thing doesn't record shows, so you won't need to skip ads. Channel BT is ad free.

      • if you use it as your "media player" or "head", to replay recorded shows from your twin tuner(on your server) in hd or sd then you do need to skip ads unless you decide to post process the files

      • But if you want to watch the last 10 minutes of a 2 hour file its a pain.

        • go get one and u'll know u can just skip to exactly which point you want, by "jump to" function lol

      • Can I just add, that beyond the 2x/4x/8x/16x, if you in the midst of forwarding and press the 'next chapter' button on the remote, you actually jump either 10 minutes or 25% - I'm not sure which.
It works on my non wifi WDTV live.

I didn't think people would route their antenna line to their server! If the antenna were feeding it to a twin tuner in an HTPC wouldn't you play it off the HTPC and not require the WDTV?

    • this does not have an ad skip ff function ie 15~30 sec forward with one button. Only simple 2x 4x 6x 8x

Sadly my Seagate equivalent has the same problem. Its a real spoiler. Otherwise it would make a decent frontend for my MythTV server, or any other PVR.

      • Thank god some one understands what i mean (by this restrictive ff function aka freeview))

I suggest people read up on this unit on the WD forums.

It seems like any new WD product this thing is riddled with bugs. I'm quite close to returning my 2 units to OW, but I'm holding out hope that they get issues sorted.

    • +1

care to expand on your issues?
I have 2 of the older wdtv live models and 1 streamer and v happy with all of them

      • I agree. I own the WDTV live and it has played anything I've thrown at it without a hiccup and it has transformed the way we watch video at home. Haven't heard of any problems with this new model until now. Please expand on your comments, Atlas.

        • I have both the old wd tv live and the new one(with the big remote)
Both of them play pretty much all types of files. Problem with the new version is
while streaming videos. In Some cases the new model is having difficulty in
recognising the newtwork shares. In my case I bought the unit price matched from OW with amazon for $85.00 yesterday.
I updated it to latest firmware which is 1.06.
If sees my my PC and laptop but not the external hard drives attached to it in network shares.
Tried it both via wireless and wired lan.

I am goin to work on that tonight.Hopefully will resolve without much trouble.
If you are just using the usb function, woudnt have much dramma and the UI on the new unit is
a bit nicer than the old one.

        • Thanks for the heads up - appreciated. Let us know how it goes.

        • kingofamazon, can you post a scan or a photo of your reciept from officeworks so we can try and get a price match. Most sane officeworks stores won't price-match Amazon directly unless they have proof another store done it. I got some old recipts from late last year but I don't think office works will except them after they've been two weeks old.

        • I had one for a while, but ended up returning it. It just had too much trouble scanning through a normal network share when it was trying to build it's media library. I would constantly fail, jam and start from beginning. The user interface, remote and things like that were nice though, so if you're looking to play stuff just from USB hard drives and memory sticks, I would recommend this box.

        • kingofamazon, could you please upload the receipt

        • +2

Here is the receipt. Good luck

My problems are solved by the way. Latest firmware (1.06)solves most of the issues. Just make sure the device is in the same group as your computers (mshome or workgroup)

        • kingofamazon, thank you very much :)

        • thankyou, thankyou, thankyou…
kingofamazon… I'll go out and buy one now (:

        • Thanks everyone, go OW to price match Amazon with shipping, go it for $96.

One issue that really annoys me is that when it's in standby it still consumes almost as much electricity as when it's running (standby just turns off the power indicator and disconnects the HDMI signal). It's around 7w and attached HDDs are still powered.

To really turn the thing off you need to hold the power button on the remote for 3 seconds. Unfortunately that causes it to forget the positions of last played files etc. Worst yet, if you practice the planet-saving habit of switching everything off at the powerpoint, the next time you go to turn it back on, the stupid thing spins right back into operation automatically (rather than in standby - not that it matters as it doesn't have a low-power state anyway). FYI, power consumption at full throttle is a mere 10w so it sure beats something like the xbox as a media centre.

Negative votes eh? Is it really that hard to take a look at the forum?

There's a whole sub-forum dedicated to issues with the unit:

      http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Streaming-Issue/idb-p…

Of particular note are the following which are relevant to my units. For whatever reason, my unit cannot stream 1080p mkvs from my HP Microserver. It just stutters after about a minute. My friend is also having the same issue with a quad-core desktop as the source. And this is using wired-ethernet, which by the way is limited to 100mb/s.

Forget wireless streaming if you're not in the same room as your router, as wireless performance on the unit is very poor.

On the other hand, my PS3 is able to stream 1080p MKVs from the Microserver with real-time transcoding.

      http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Streaming-Issue/WDTV-…

There's also reports of the unit actually deleting people's entire media library collections, although thankfully this has not happened to me.

      • The only issues I have had with it have been fairly minor - I have it networked to my PC which has all my media and can stream everything I throw at it. The largest file I have chucked at it is a 14Gb 1080p mkv and has played it beautifully. It seems like this issue is effecting some of the players only.

The main issue I was having is that I had it set up to go into standby when not in use (controlled via universal remote) however when I started it back up there was always a delay in reconnecting to the media library so instead I just leave it running all the time now and does not have any issues. I know it is not the most power concious decision but it makes the operation much smoother.

  • The model listed is the US version, so the adaptor supplied will not have a AUS plug.

    • +1

true sparhawk but you can get an Aus adaptor for $1 incl delivery of Ebay…….so technically this will cost $101.96 :)

      Face -> Palm

      • i know its a little naughty, but it does work. When in malaysia they force the round plugs into the square sockets with pliers.

  • Went to Artarmon Officeworks yesterday. They wont do the price matching and beat it by 5%…they said they dont price match online stores etc (Amazon) I show em the receipt that you guys scanned here they still said no. Pfft…Dont bother going to Artarmon store anymore.

    • That's my 2nd closest store. I'm going to pick one of these up. I'll try the Mosman/Spit Jn store tomorrow morning.

    • So I got it from the Mosman store for $94.05 after much dicking around
