Which iPhone for $1k

Hi all, my youngest Son 15yo has been happy with hand me down phones etc.

But never had an iphone and now he wants one. Old phone ia broken, its his own money from working. I have tried to talk him out of it and just get an Android for $300 (previously had a Xiaomi Note 9 Pro). But someone has mentioned Iphone to him and i can't sway him.

I have no idea about them. And confused with ao many variants.

Thanks.

iPhone se and save the remaining money?

  • iPhone 11 or 12 mini.

His money, his choice i reckon

  • iPhone XR.

It'll last him even after he becomes an adult.

    • If the last phone is broken it's unlikely this one's fate will be spared.

    SE, XR, 11 < $1k

Don't forget to take storage size into consideration. iPhones don't have expandable storage so you'll need to consider getting a model with larger storage unless you prefer paying for iCloud monthly subscription.

  • Required memory will make a big difference to your options. I have an SE and wife iphone 11. The 11 is a lot better - screen much nicer, better battery, noticeably better camera. That’s the one I would go for (under $1000 for 64gb, about $50 over for 128gb)

  • 11 if you want to spend up around the $1K, otherwise a good condition used X off eBay punches incredibly hard for ~$400. A lot of them have decent warranties.

Mobileciti has Xs 256 for around $600 on eBay sale.

Op, you can get a refurb 11 Pro Max 256gb from Apple for $929.

I bought a refurb XS Max last year and it’s still going strong! My 15yo son also has an XS Max (hand-me-down from wife) which he’s happy with.

+1 another vote, for recommending a midrange Android phone.

The Redmi Note 10 Pro is great value, offering all the features you want, a great 120Hz-OLED screen, a great 108MP camera, all in a nice package. The 128GB version is going for AUD $395 on Banggood right now. The only issue is the construction isn't great (fake glass) and is only splash-resistant (IP53). That spammy MIUI can also be debloated/rooted, or totally replaced with a Custom Rom instead.

    • Probably doesn't want a laggy POS Operating System, probably enjoys the zero-day updates for 5+ years, the integration with all things Apple, the unbeatable warranty experience, the privacy-focused OS etc etc

Its neither laggy or a POS. Check the many reviews.

Terrific phone, I got one recently for $358. Not sure why the negs? I prefer it to the iphone 11s my wife and daughter have. Never had an issue with MIUI either, a few ads but they can be turned off.

But the kid, like a lot of kids, wants an iphone and its his money.

Go to Facebook Marketplace, he can buy a new iPhone Pro Max 512GB for $$$$, but don't let him open the box until he gets home. Opens the box, finds a very cheap Android phone.
Win/win, you both get what you want. He gets to buy an iPhone, you get to see him with an Android.

Haha and then OP's son will make a post on a popular bargain site resulting in the seller getting doxxed?

  • XR at $700 strikes the balance between value and being an iphone. My son needs a new phone soon to replace his old 6s and that's what I'm looking at.

SE may be good but looks very dated which matters to kids I think.

    Thanks all.

He picked up an Iphone 11 from JB hifi.

PS: get home snd it doesnt come with a charger and the cable doesn't fit any power blocks i have.

Effing Apple. I said to him. You make your bed you lay in it.

  • My 18yo bought an iPhone XR 128gb. Came to around $730 (office work price match the good guys). It’s his money so why not? I do recommend the Xr, it’s still a very good phone. He need to put a good case and screen protector on it.
