  • Doen't look like it has a good review…

      …. from what source?

    • +2

That's only because cry-babies bother whining on Amazon and Newegg.

The percieved problems with the GoFlex Home series are related to the bundled software and not hardware issues.
Although it wouldn't surprise me if a few numpties are still going off about the "Click of Death" which hasn't been relevant since Ramesses stepped down as Pharaoh.

And let's be honest, who the hell bothers with Seagate's or WD's bundled crapware?

If you're serious about Data Redundancy then you're not going to be touching bundled software with 10ft pole. There's far better free-ware alternative for backup and syncing.

"There's far better free-ware alternative for backup and syncing."

        Such as?

        • +1

          Cobian

          SyncToy

Windows 7 has an inbuilt imaging function which is very handy too.

        • synctoy ftw. I am an experienced IT geek, and this little piece of software rocks

        • I use cobian works quite well and isn't too CPU intesive. Dont even notice it going.

      • I have a question. hope anyone can answer, when an external hard drive goes to sleep how do you wake it?
not using any provided software, mac or pc so it must be on the firmware or more likely part of the dock.
goes to sleep while transferring files so its a puzzle what is initiating the sleep request.
so therefore a hard reset/unplugging anything isnt a good idea when transferring files to wake it up!
if it is true that the hard drives in these units didnt qualify for 24-7 operation then this forced sleep mode to save the drives life is not good for data backups.
in fact it makes them pretty useless for their intended purpose.

        • I recall seeing a utility that WD put our for their drives but you may want to look at this which links to a freeware utility…

Make a nice strong cup of coffee & just waft the aroma around the front of the drive! :p

Seriously though, it may not be going to sleep, it may actually be disconnecting, which is not unheard of for USB drives. Depending on the make & model it could be anything from a firmware issue to simple settings…google is your friend! ;)

        • Allow me to introduce you to this: http://nosleephd.codeplex.com/

      • Is it possible to reformat the hard drive so that the bundled software gets deleted? Or are they hidden in another partition?

  • lol I have one of these btu i swear isnt this a dupe?

  • The reviews I've seen are generally positive apart from some issues with setup.

Mwave has it listed for $373.80!

This is a very good price comparing to all the other stores.

  • Wonder how long these will take to ship…

Been waiting on Live chat for ages.

    • If you get an estimation on your delivery cost it'll also tell you delivery time. For Perth it says 4 days.

  • Looks like OW doesnt have them so cant price beat

I bought the 1TB for $120 from DSE before xmas, so 3TB for $199 is good.
There was no problem with setup, pretty straight forward.
My cons with the drive are:
    - I have experienced problems with loading large files to the drive.
    - Memeo progressive backup is annoying (uninstalled).
    - Lack of maintenance software. If you get the drive into trouble, there is no chkdsk, defrag support. Seagate's own SeaTools doesn't support it. (Reformat is messy especially with 3TB of data to deal with.)

The drive will be much better if it provides an alternate USB connection too. I ended up paying another $80 for the 1TB GoFlex Desk as well. The drive can be swapped to the GoFlex Desk base to be connected via USB to the PC. It's much better to load large files and perform maintenance this way.

Overall, not a bad deal if you understand this is just a consumer based product intended for home use. Don't expect the world.

Wondering what hd is inside? Is it the XT?

Seagate - crap company and crap product.

I beg to differ… I buy a lot of drives (apart from quite a few PC's and Mac's I run a Drobo and a NAS… a quick tally shows over 30 drives currently in use). As there is the occasional bad batch from either vendor I split purchases between Seagate and Western Digital. After three years use I retire them (if not sooner).

Since 2005 I've had three drives fail… all were Western Digital. One was a brand new 3.5" drive that was DOA, one was a 2.5" laptop drive and the final one was an external 2.5" drive.

Just my personal experience. Does it cause me to slag off Western Digital? No.

      • Just my personal experience. Does it cause me to slag off Western Digital? No.

Precisely. I will always be a bit dirty with Seagate over their handling of the 7200.11 debacle, they didn't win any friends by adopting the ostrich defence. I lost a lot of data (not critical stuff, that was backed up - but replacing the trivial stuff was a pain) that they promised to restore. However, the drives have been rock-solid since refurb, and I've not heard significant complaints from Seagate owners now that the CoD/firmware issue has apparently been sorted.

I've ordered one of these, with shipping it ends up being under $209 delivered…I can't find a cheaper equivalent 3TB NAS solution! ;)

    • I have the Seagate freeagent goflex 1.5gb 2.5" usb3 and it has a well known problem. The drive intermittently disconnected during file copy and usage. I have emailed support two weeks ago and so far no reply. Very disappointed.

Try facebook "Seagate Support". my experience is reply within hours (business hours of course). B

  • I disagree, (i bought 2 of these for $240 couple months ago) they are the XT drives, i cant be 100% sure for this batch of stock, but mine are also Seagate FREEAGENT GOFLEX HOME 3TB and they had the Barracuda XT drives, 7200rpm, opened them and using in my pc :D

    • these are Network, not the regular Home version you have there.

  • +1.5% Credit Card fee as well… but still a great deal

    • +2

They have Paypal so you can still pay with your credit card (through Paypal) and not incur the 1.5% fee.

      • Damn, I just realised that I still got stung for the 1.5% even using Paypal! :s

Oh well, as epicaricacy said it's still a great deal…an extra $3 or so to save me fiddling with DD is money well spent! ;)

Dunno if phones count as computers, but - if they do - this could COST MORE…

  • I'm confused. I just need backup storage that will let me network photos, video and music files. Is this a good drive for a simple network?

    • Yes. It works similarly to a USB drive except you plug it into your router with a network cable and get way faster speeds than USB options.

  • In this review it talks about transfer speeds being 16 MB/s

To those that have one: What kind of netwrok transfer speeds are you experiencing?

    • What is the maximum size xp recognises on an external hard drive

      • It can depend on various factors but in simplistic terms for an external hard drive on a PC with PC BIOS the LBA limit is 2.1TB without using software to access the remainder (which the drive manufacturer will normally provide or have available for download).

If you have a newer PC which has a UEFI BIOS and you run 64 bit Vista or 64 bit Win7 then you are good to go until they start selling 9.4ZB drives!

Thanks OP, exactly what I was after! +1

  • BTW, if anyone is looking for a good cheap dual band gigabit router (not modem/router) as an upgrade to match the drive, then OLC also has a special on the Linksys e3000 ATM for $79! http://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/product_info.php?products_i…

I can't imagine it would cost much more in shipping for them to add these to the order either…well worth a look! :)

  • Freakin awesome, mine arrived before I'm leaving for work today!!! :D

[update] Just set it up in the first 5mins of my lunch break, really simple to do. I'm quite impressed with this drive! :)

Don't bother with the bloat…er I mean software, just connect it up to your switch & direct a web browser to //goflex_home & follow the instructions! ;)

      • +1

Thanks for the instructions, Stewballs. Got it up and running easily :)
